I've not heard of this. What a great idea? I have to look into this more. Sorry I can't help there in the UK but hope someone will be able to.
At the minute, Peggy, it looks seriously expensive. The only one I've found starts at £1400 ($800) for a 40k book...I don't feel qualified as an actor to do it myself, and I don't have the recording equipment to even try it!
I would need to hire someone to read it because most people don't like to hear my southern accent, although all my books take place in the south, mostly Georgia. USA.There's a school for the blind right here in town and I'll bet you could sell some there or atleast put some in their library.
Peggy, are you by chance near Cave Spring? I'm a hour or so away and we drive by the school there when we go to Atlanta. I have tape recorded myself reading parts of my book aloud when I get stuck writing. It really helps when you hear it read back to you (although I hate my voice, the southern accent is ok but I sound like a chipmunk on speed to my own ears). Sometimes just reading your words aloud is enough to make you realize the trouble spots.
I have always wondered why audio books, especially unabridged, are so much more expensive than regular books, it seems that it would be cheaper to produce a copy CD than a printed book, even if it costs $800 to produce that first recording.

Amazon have just started a partnership with ACX to convert ebooks into audiobooks and then list them on Amazon and Audible. Unfortunately, it's only available to US authors.
Anyone know of an equivalent service in the UK? It's something I'm interested in doing. The more outlets, the more readers!
