The book has a quote at the start of each chapter. I think it may have as "The" in the title?!

Annnnd, what happens with these people?Compete how? I get the "no rules" may correlate with the Machiavelli-ness... But in what arena? Is murder condoned/happens?
Their reward is a million, or is it a race to who can make a million first? If the latter, why are these people associating?
Who's in-charge, offering things to these people? Or, who picked them?
Is this non-fiction, fiction, romance, sci-fi, suspense, action, something else?
When did you read it? Any idea on when it was published? Where did you get the book? From a library? Paperback, hardback, ebook? Cover art?
The Money Makers by Harry Bingham is somewhat similar to your book.
Kate, around what year did you read this book?
Who are the people in this competition?

Yes the book has a quote at the start of each chapter and I think it has a "The" in the title. The book is fiction.
They're set a task, they have 1 year to make £1m and there are no rules as to how they do this i.e. through hard work, stealing it, taking it from the other competitors. I read it years ago (perhaps 10) and it's paperback.
Kate, bump your thread every month or so to keep it at the top of the list where new people can see it. You never know when a memory will be jogged!
This book is too recent (2014), but I'll mention it just in case you're interested - The Osborne Legacy by Mark Cundy.
