Jill Shultz | 5 comments Hello,

I've recently added my book to GoodReads. I'd like to add information about the dimensions of the paperback and file sizes of the ebooks, as well the metadata.

When I am in the "Edit Book" screen, I don't see any fields that would allow me to add the dimensions or URL.

When I switch to the "Show Metadata" tag, the box says, "No metadata answers yet." To the right, I see: "Answering these questions helps us build a recommendation system..." but there are no visible questions.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Jill Shultz

Banjomike | 5166 comments You can add it through the review page. Go to add a review then click on "edit book metadata".

Jill Shultz | 5 comments I must be in the wrong screen because I don't see a review page. I accessed my book through the author dashboard. Clicked on the title, then clicked on "edit."

You are OK until the "edit". Add a review instead. The metadata is supposedly based on what people read in the book. As an author you know in advance what the metadata is going to be but us normal people have to read the book first hence it is entered through the review page.

Jill Shultz | 5 comments Thanks for your patience. As the author, I can't review my own book. Is that why I'm not seeing anything for adding a review?

Also, is this the way to add in the information I missed earlier, such as the URL and dimensions?

As far as I know, unless there have changes in policy over the last few days you certainly can review your book. All that happens is a tag is added which says "review by author" or some-such.

Metadsata is stuff like,
Is this book fiction or nonfiction?
What is the genre of this book (romance, thriller, historical fiction, etc.)
What are the subjects of this book

Dimensions, don't think so. URL is on main edit page.

You certainly can. Such reviews are automatically labelled "review from author".

Goodreads does not track information about book dimensions.

URL is no longer enterable by authors, but if you provide a link to the book in question and the URL you wish entered, a librarian can add it (assuming it meets our guidelines for official book URLs).

the author group might be more helpful as librarians do not see the same things GR authors see.

Vicky (librovert) | 2462 comments The URL is added through the edit page, you must have missed it before. It's between the edition and description fields. Scratch that!

There isn't a specified field for dimensions and it's not something that we usually include in book information.

Like Banjomike said, the meta data is added through a review. To do this you will want to go to the book's page and add it to one of your shelves. On the review light-box there is a link on the right side almost at the bottom that will take you to edit the book's meta data. You don't have to review or rate the book, but you do have to have it added to your shelves.

The metadata questions are things like fiction/nonfiction, subjects, narrator pov (1st, 2nd, etc), literary devices (flashbacks, epistolary, etc).

Is that a recent change?

Jill Shultz | 5 comments Thanks to everyone. I feel like a hippo blundering through a field of buttercups.

I thought I did see a field for "dimensions" when I first entered my info, and I did read about it.

When someone has the chance, could you please add my URL?
Here's the book: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17...

And here's my author website: http://www.jillshultz.com/Angel-on-th...

I will join the author group now, and post any other questions there.

Thanks again!

I just looked it up in help and found what you were looking at. Goodreads use to have a Bookswap program and dimensions were used to calculate the cost of shipping. They stopped the program probably a year and a half ago now and probably took out that functionality with it.
