Kyle (Ignoble) Am I the only one who finds Middle Earth cheesy as all hell? I mean as an author Tolkien is everything you could want. Detailed, comprehensive etc. But... I mean elves? Goblins? Orcs? Hobbits? I cant get passed it. Its on the same level as scifi books with pink aliens who have 5 nipples and three antennae, two of with are on their elbows. I cant get passed it. Never enjoyed The Hobbit or LotR. SOMEONE agree with me. Hahaha, I feel like a pariah.

Anna | 16 comments Haha yes, i think you're the only one who has that opinion :) I think that elfes, goblins, orcs and hobbits are pretty damn cool! :D

message 3: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) lol Sigh. Forever alone... woe is me...

Replicant Rachel 1-" Its on the same level as scifi books with pink aliens who have 5 nipples and three antennae" LOLLLL
2-IT'S OK NOT TO LIKE SOME BOOKS OF THE SAME AUTHOR, EVEN I HE'S SUCCESSFUL
3-I CAN'T GET PAST IT..NOT PASSED IT
4- Its on the same level as scifi books with pink aliens who have 5 nipples and three antennae :D :P HEHEHEHEHE WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN READING?!!

message 5: by Laura (new)

Laura Sorry but I love the books. I am though with Thebomb and want to know what book has the pink alien with 5 nipples? ;) And if there is no such book I think you should write it!! ;P

Replicant Rachel make it a comedy book :P

message 7: by Anna (new)

Anna | 16 comments hahah, it's like my mother used to say "if you don't like the book, write one yourself and stop complaining!" hahah! you should maybe consider that, write a new LotR book series and remove all the things you disliked about it and add the stuff you want instead ;D haha

message 8: by Lillian (new)

Lillian (lilliebear) Compared to other books I've read that are considered 'amazing', I didn't find The Lord of the Rings series cheesy at all. Middle Earth isn't all rainbows and butterflies, or the same thing throughout the whole world, it was as diverse in people and land as is the world we live in.

message 9: by Sydney (new)

Sydney Wallace | 22 comments I vehemently disagree with you there, but I'm a pariah myself as I find the 'Twilight' series insipid, think the Harry Potter books were just alright, and loathe '50 Shades' with a passion that burns brighter than a million suns...

message 10: by Leora (new)

Leora (magratgarlick) | 25 comments I think that Tolkien started the whole elves and orcs thing, and that it's all the copycats who have made it seem cheesy. And Sydney, insipid doesn't even begin to describe Twilight. Absolute WORST heroine ever!!!! I just wanted to slap her the whole time I was reading!

message 11: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) @THEBOMB - There have been a PLETHORA of debates and articles on whether passed or past apply. However in that sentence the expression is in relation to the physical act of PASSING by something. Thus passed would be correct. Imo. As for the pink aliens I was just making a point. =P

@SYDNEY - Twilight, if you go into it expecting a really advanced well written series, would of course seem insipid. However coming at it objectively with no expectations Id say its a pretty decent series for its... target demographic.

@LEORA - I hadn't really thought of that point. Touché. Bias rears is ugly head again.

message 12: by Replicant Rachel (new)

Replicant Rachel yeh but saying i can't get past it have the same meaning as Passing it...and the pink aliens is a good idea you have to admit :P

message 13: by Leora (new)

Leora (magratgarlick) | 25 comments Kyle, what do you think of as Twilight's target demographic? I'm thinking young girls, and in that case it is just about the worst thing they could read! There are plenty of books (hunger games comes to mind) with strong female characters who go out and solve problems instead of sitting around and moping until a guy comes and saves them.

message 14: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) @LEORA - Hmmmm. Teenagers yes. Male and female. I also think there's a large demographic for women between 20-40. Single or not completely satisfied. So basically most of them. =P The way she writes the female lead is... in my opinion ONLY of course, the way an insecure woman trying to be optimistic and putting a good face on it would write it. The rest of it also emphasizes a sort of reminiscence which not only appeals to young girls as something to look forward to but for still fairly young women (20-40) who'd like to romantisize their own history or rewrite it to something more ideal.

message 15: by Sydney (new)

Sydney Wallace | 22 comments @Kyle, when you put it that way, I have to admit that Meyer does an excellent job in portraying in her writing the way women of that age do think.
I just don't understand, still, how anyone can consider Bella a strong, or admirable character...but, that's just me.

message 16: by Replicant Rachel (new)

Replicant Rachel I have to say Twilight is not the worst book out there..and yet people who dislike it talk about it more than people who actually like it...as for the female lead, she didn't sit around, i don't think she made good choices either but she's not a softie or an optimist, she's different and she admits that from page 1, she just fell in love with a vampire, and she faced that fact and acted on it...I just don't understand why do people ,who don't understand that about her, keep complaining and whining about Twilight, a series that all of it's books turned into movies?? o.O not even Anne Rice's The Vampires Chronicles got all that attention..hell, even Dracula doesn't have a modern remake, and not everybody loves those stories..Why,OH Why does every single topic in BLOODY GOODREADS turns into a Twilight Debate?!!! this is a site for ALL BOOKS you know o.O

message 17: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) @SYDNEY - As far as I can tell no one really thinks that or if they do they think of it in the context of a teenage girls accomplishments, socially. Its more the fairytale romance thing. The female portion of any fairytale romance, despite her quality, is always considered the heroine/damsel. It seems odd and contradictory but that's what seems to happen in my opinion.

message 18: by Kyle (new)

Kyle (Ignoble) @THEBOMB - If you're gonna sit there and tell me that because a book was made into a movie its a good book... well the most polite thing I can do is just not say anything. lol

Replicant Rachel Kyle wrote: "@THEBOMB - If you're gonna sit there and tell me that because a book was made into a movie its a good book... well the most polite thing I can do is just not say anything. lol"

i'm saying if it's such a horrible book, then why do you think they made THE WHOLE SERIES into films?? and don't give me the "most of the target demographic is all 13 yrs-old girls & women crap and the film industry want more female audience as it is bla bla bla"...I'm also pointing out that,as i've noticed, EVERY SINGLE GOODREADS TOPIC,turns into a twilight debate because it's that popular, whether it's about loving it or hating it,it's getting annoying...

message 20: by Danielle (new)

Danielle (danielle_k) I'm 29 and loved Twilight. I just don't love that I loved Twilight lol

message 27: by Santino (new)

Santino (tinoprinzi) When it comes to making movies out of books, there is one thing we need to remember and that is... It needs to make money.

Twilight and their books were huge in terms of sales and popularity, so a film or a series of films were inevitable. It's the same with books that are well written, and not well written, it's about will it sell.

I can think of other examples too: anything that was by Ronald Dahl, Harry Potter, 50 shades (or so I heard, might just be rumour), hunger games, series of unfortunate events, Bridget jones, LOTR, classic literature is always being made into films because it makes the tills ring also, such as Dickens and Austen.

I'm not saying that they're good or bad books or films, I'm just thinking about it from a business point of view, where the quality of the writing of the text will be irrelevant.
