THS Book Club discussion

Thanks! We can definitely do that. Another thing that might be worth mentioning is that Goodreads has a "poll" feature available amongst groups, which we might want to consider using to select next month's book.

First, this month's book is: Life of Pi.
Secondly, because I got quite a few questions, regarding this: book club meetings do not take place during Activity Period. We meet after school every other Monday. Thanks!

Happy Reading!

Life of Pi: The discussion that never was.
Most of the members that attended today's meeting hadn't had the opportunity to finish reading the novel or didn't have any interest in doing so, so we used the time to draft some plans for the next few months.
First off, our next book has been selected!
We will be reading Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher for the month of April.
Our next meeting is going to be on the Monday after April break, April 22, at which point we are going to be discussing plans for a Life of Pi movie screening to compliment our reading session, future meetings and book recommendations as the 2012-2013 school year draws to an end, an invitation campaign to include members and encourage new interest, and most importantly, take names for the list of members for purposes of records and upcoming events.
Please note that you are not expected to finish reading 13 Reasons Why by then. Ms. Magistralli will be ordering copies for the library that should be in stock sometime within the days following our next meeting. We will not be discussing 13 Reasons Why until the meeting after next. April 22 is purely organizational (but attendance, even if just briefly to check-in, is strongly encouraged). The Discussion date will be planned when we meet on the 22nd.
I would quickly like to address some comments made by people leading up to today's meeting: I just want to remind you guys that you don't have to finish the book to attend the meetings! We have snacks and beverages and take votes, and those who haven't read the books still help guide discussion and contribute to plans for the future. If you don't finish the book, please don't hesitate to join us anyway!
Thanks for checking in, guys! Let me know if you need anything or would like a more in-depth overview of today's meeting.
Best wishes and happy reading!

For those of you unable to attend today's meeting, feel free to share your thoughts on 13 Reasons Why in any Goodreads discussion here on the group page!
Though movie screening plans are still in progress, it seems we've wrapped up our last book discussion of the year! Our next official book-talk meeting will be at the start of the 2013-2014 school year to discuss the one-book-one-school summer reading assignment!
If you guys have any questions, please let me know! I'll be keeping everyone updated on developments in the Kindness Campaign.
Have a great week and an epic summer!
Happy reading!

If anyone would like to sign up to bring snacks and beverages, please feel free to let me or one of our advisors know! Meanwhile, I encourage everyone to invite friends and spread the word to English teachers! The club is freely open-enrollment. :)
This year we're looking at hosting movie screenings, book discussions, a Kindness Campaign, possible optional volunteer opportunities, and more! Best of luck with your classes, and I look forward to working with you all this year! :)
Happy reading!

Firstly, many thanks to everyone that did make it! You're going to have a foundation that's going to help you stay filled-in for our events all the way through the first semester.
For the rest of our members, don't be overly concerned.
1. We chose to wait to have the TFiOS discussion for our next meeting, in hopes not to exclude anyone who was unable to attend due to the late bus conundrum. We will have the official discussion during our next meeting.
2. Our next meeting is Monday, September 23, in the library after school. We will be discussing TFiOS and choosing our next book -- make sure to bring your recommendations!
3. We're still looking for volunteers to bring a snack and/or beverages for the next meeting! Let Mrs. Magistralli know in the library if you'd like to volunteer to contribute.
4. If you have the chance, please let me, Candace, Cassie, or Mrs. Magistralli know that you will be participating this year. We try our best to keep track of names (and faces! If I'm not wearing my glasses when you pass me in the hall, please forgive me if I don't see you first! I never bite, so it's always okay to flag me down and announce yourself! I won't bite.), especially when it comes to making sure everyone is aware of news and is able to participate in Book-Club exclusive events.
5. We discussed that the Book Club will usually congregate in the back of the library, where the tables are pushed together to create a broader discussion space. Usually next to an unsightly pile of backpacks!
6. We discussed the possibility of movie screenings when we read books that have been converted into movies. Our secretary, Cassie, also contributed the awesome idea to having a second discussion to contrast the movie and book. We'll let you guys know when we have more information.
7. Otherwise, we wrapped up pretty quickly! We discussed fun summer reads and the importance of paying attention to Goodreads, but most of our actual Book Club activities will start officially on the 23rd for our first discussion!
So, that's that! I can't wait for our first discussion and I really look forward to working with you all this year! (Is it really work when you're having fun?) If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask me, VP Candace, Secretary Cassie, or advisors Mr. Horton or Mrs. Magistralli.
See you soon! Happy reading!

Meetings will occur on the second and forth Mondays of the month, after school in the library. Please note that the first meeting of the month is intended for book club activities such as discussion and the second meeting is purely organizational. Organizational meetings will be used to decide upon the next book, coordinate who is bringing food/beverages, and address any other matters that may arise.

Student officers and advisors have officially been identified. Other positions may become available or open as the size of the group grows.

Club President: Miranda Wheeler (http://bit.ly/UTkhFZ)
Vice President: Candace Wilcox (http://bit.ly/11M5sok)

Currently Reading
We're currently reading Paper Towns by John Green. Paperback copies of the book are available in the LMC. Please see Mrs. Magistrali for more information.
Next Meeting
For discussion purposes, members should be prepared to discuss the novel for Monday, February 11. For our first meeting, Ms. Magistrali is contributing snacks and Miranda is bringing drinks.
For our next meeting, it might be useful to bring in a bullet list or 2-3 questions/topics to contribute to the discussion. If you'd like to make a name tag, you're welcome to do so as well.
Also, if everyone can make a point of getting the word out about our next meeting and the Goodreads group, it would be a wonderful help in starting to make communication and organization much easier in the future. Please and thank you!
That just about covers it! If anyone has any questions, feel free stop by to visit Ms. Magistrali in the library or contact me via Goodreads or email (simplyindie@gmail.com). Any of our student officers should be able to help and provide additional information, or at least send you in the right direction!
Well, then, off you go! Happy reading! :)
