I just heard that there is going to be a movie coming out on November 1, 2013. It's supposed to be based on Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow and Orson Scott Card is going to be one of the producers. I don't know if I should be excited or a little worried.

I have a good feeling about this. A little scared, but im gonna hope they dont mess this movie up, its one of my favorite science fictions novels. But heck they Han Solo as Colonel Graff!! :)
Card is pretty excited about it. He's been very hands on. It's a merger between Enger's Game and Ender's shadow.Though in an interview Card said he thinks the best presentation was the audiobook, I have to agree it was pretty fantastic.

Absolutely! The audiobook version of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow are fabulous! Movie?....I'm on the fence, but I'll definitely see it. I understand it has been in the works for a long time anyway, so hope they get it right.
I too loved the audio books. Let's hope we get a good movie. I'm looking forward to it. Incidentally, I also read the comics which I thought were well done.
I'm also hoping they don't mess it up. This is one of my favorite science fiction novels, too! I'm also hoping that the movie will do well in the box office since they had a pretty big budget and don't want it to all be a waste. But I can't wait to see it.
If it were 2 separate stories, I might be concerned about it being one movie, but since it is basically the same story from the different perspectives of Ender and Bean, I'll suspend my concern for now. I'm with you though, Parker, on the Asa Butterfield expectation. Absolutely >hated< Hugo on just about every level, and he was very very annoying in that. That's the extent of my exposure to him though, so maybe it was just the horrible story/script, etc, and he deserves a shot.
To be honest, I am excited that there will be a movie. I understand that there is a chance that it will misinterpret the book (as movies based on books frequently do, but the entire time I was reading this I wished there was a movie based on this book - solely because, for some odd reason, I just could not visualize the battles, games, and the simulator. I really feel as though I need a visual aid to piece my own imagination together. The movie could suck, but in a way, it would help me understand the book a little better.

Well, the movie will never be as good as Ender's Game, but all the same I'm excited for it. I read in some interview of Orson that they will expose the knowledge of the bug war early in the movie, and not leave it till the end, which for me was one of the greatest unexpected shocks I've ever had in any book. So I don't know how the movie will turn out :)
I read Ender's Game back in the 80's. It is an excellent story. I just recently listened to the audiobook last year during a long drive. It too was very well done. I am excited to see the movie later this year but I do have some concerns. I will save my criticism for after viewing the film especially since OSC has been heavily involved. If he thinks some things are okay then it just may well be. We'll see.
Keep in mind movies aren't the same story. They're a different type of narrative. If you expect the magic of the book, you're likely to be disappointed the medium isn't suited for it. But if you go into it thinking, this will be an homage to a story I love, you should (I hope) be happy with what comes out.

But if you go..."I agree. With movies made from your favorite books, they tend to disappoint. Better to go in with low expectations and be surprised. Oh, and I don't know if someone mentioned it yet, but Ben Kingsley plays Mazer Rackham. (I always think of "rack 'em up" when I hear his name.)
Yes, most movies from books usually don't tend to be nearly as good as the actual book. Hopefully, it won't be as bad as others turn out to be. But I'll definitely try and stop myself from having high expectations for the movie.
Speaker for the Dead would make a much better movie than Ender's Game. Ender's Game might be an action film with lots of special effects, but the dialogue and the character development in the second book is better. I don't go to many movies so it isn't that big of a deal to me one way or the other.

OSC ws involved in re-working the stories so that they worked for the screen, and he kows how to do that. So, it will certainly be a good movie, even if it´s not quite the movie we expect from the two source books being combined. OSC really really understands ¨story¨and I´d be shocked if EG didn´t live up to expectations. Just hope the actors are up to it...
that movie trailer for the sequel of rise of the planet of the apes looked like it was going to for enders game so i was sad that it wasn't

I feel re-assured that Harrison Ford took on the project, he has decent tastes. Though, I've always envision Graff to be bigger, and gruffer.
I'm interested in a film adaptation. I'm a little leery, though, of seeing how they portray the kids. What a reader might let go (the age of the children and the vocabulary they use) might not play well on the big screen when one has to actually see and hear it happening. We'll see, though. In recent years, Hollywood has managed to get some amazing performances out of young actors. It's down to the actors on this one more than other film adaptations, because if we don't believe them the whole film fails.
I hope they make into an adult-oriented movie, not a kiddie movie, with at least a PG 13 rating. There needs to be enough violence to show Ender loosing it, and beats the crap out of Bonzo. I notice there is no casting of Achilles and no Sister Carlotta, I guess that part of Bean's life is something we wont' be seeing.
I'm worried. Consider "the vampire's apprentice" how they ruined the whole series by culminating 8 of the books into one movie. I'm worried (because the books are soooooo good) that there won't be enough time to give fair representation to both books in one movie! And I hope they're more fair to the timeline and age group expectation regarding "Ender's Game" in contrast to the poor, fairly obtuse effigy within "The vampire's apprentice" as opposed to the book.
A movie would be truly exciting, especially if they do well by the book. I've read all the Orson Scott Card I could get my hands on, and Ender's Game has stuck with me for a very long time.
In the post-script in one of the audiobooks, Card discusses why the movie combines Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. In short, by using their combined perspectives, the story turns into a "buddy movie" and allows the audience to learn about each character and their motivations through their relationship. If the screenplay just used Ender's Game, because much of it is inside Ender's head, Card believed this would not translate so well to film. I have to agree with Card on this one. I'm eagerly anticipating the movie.Although I've known about Ender's Game for years, I only listened to the audiobook (& Ender's Shadow) this year.

But if it sucks, I'll still have ENDER'S GAME (the book) and ENDER'S SHADOW (the book). @hg47
Harv wrote: Hey, Walter! I'll be looking forward to the ENDER'S GAME movie. But if it sucks, I'll still have ENDER'S GAME (the book) and ENDER'S SHADOW (the book)."Very true, Harv. If you're game (heh) for it, you may want give the audiobooks a listen. I wish more audiobooks would use muliple voices.
From the promo photo, it looks like they'll be dealing with the age of the children by making them into young teens. I'm not sure I like this. Part of the horror of what happens to Ender is that it's done to someone young enough to have developed no means of coping. I mean, unless that's a still from quite late in the movie, but those are obviously Salamander badges, so he should only be seven, at the oldest.
Card indicated that the timeline at Battle School is condensed to one year. Seemed like it was not possible in the length of a movie to capture Ender or Bean's entire timelines. I think people need to readjust their expectations whenever a novel is adapted for a movie. An movie adaptation will be different. And one way it's ALWAYS going to be different is that the screenplay is going to be condensed. I think it's unrealistic to expect a literal translation from novel to screenplay.

Thanks for the pic, Amy! Petra! Unfortunately, we won't get to see her naked, as the boys did in the book. But it looks like Great Fun! @hg47

Also agree that this undercuts the primal power of ENDER'S GAME: children. The movie actors are not children in Amy's pic; but young adults. So what? I still have the books; and the movie might be a fun additional thrill. @hg47 P.S. - and Walter, I take your point also. The last, and only real control a novelist has over the final MOVIE is exercised by who that novelist sells his work to; from that moment on, he is a bystander in a visual rendition of his work that may put it on a pedestal or rape it.
This is very exciting, Ender's Game has been one of my favorite novels since the first time I read it in 5th grade and after reading the entire Ender series and shadow series I think a movie incorporating both Ender's game and Ender's shadow would be good
