J.D. Jones | 10 comments Being fairly new to Goodreads I was wondering if anyone could give me any pointers as how to use the website appropriately and yet to the maximum potential for promoting and sharing my writing with other writers while at the same time supporting and promoting them? I was a little disheartened to be informed this week that although I've put my novella on the website it isn't visible to anyone.

Sam Kates Hi Jonathan. I'm relatively new to GR myself and find it a little difficult to navigate, though it does get easier (like anything does) the more you do.

In answer to your question, I'd say that promoting and sharing your work with other writers is fairly easy - just add your books to any promotional thread and other writers who post there will see it. The real question, to which I don't know the answer, is how to make READERS aware of your work without them feeling it's being forced down their throats.

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2274 comments Hey guys, for simple promotion just find a good group that interests you like this one, find or make a thread that promotes books and mentions yours. I myself interview authors and am always looking to help promote and get fellow authors exposure. So just discuss in some topics, make some threads and youll find it all comes naturally.

Jacqueline Rhoades (jackierhoades) | 149 comments Look for threads that say R2R -read to review, or authors seeking reviews. Check the discussions where your book would fit or general book threads. Most of all, chat! I'm a lurker by nature, but once you get used to it, it gets easier. Goodreads people are, for the most part pretty nice. Jump right in there and throw your two cents in.

Hey Sam, I seem to bump in to you a lot! How's it going?

Hi all, I've been on goodreads about two months and this is what I've learned:

First, I would say if you have a hardcopy of your book, do a giveaway, over 500 hundred people signed up to win a copy of my YA novel Ill-fated, only three could win, but almost 300 put the book on their to-read list regardless of whether they won or not!

Also, do a read to review (r2r), if your book is available through smashwords, offer to give people a coupon to get your book for free if they give an honest review (there are other ways to get them a free copy, but smashwords seems to be the only place that lets you give your own books away for free).
You can set this up through the groups you are it. Go to events: add event, r2r give details, etc. Once the event details are written (include info about your book), you will be asked who you want to invite, if you can, invite everyone in the group (please note, some groups monitor events and you must ask the monitor first, others, like this group do not allow you to invite everyone).

Later, message those who say "yes" to the event with a coupon. This will get you more reviews and others will see your book being added to their reading lists!

Hope this helps and good luck.

Peggy Holloway | 393 comments Jonathan, you're ahead of me. I can't even figure out how to start a discussion like you've done. Every time I try it I get a message that the discussion has to be about a particular book. I have met the nicest and most helpful people on goodreads and I follow and join in the discussions but I have a hard time getting around on here.

Mellie (mellie42) | 644 comments Jonathan is your book on Goodreads? Have you claimed it as yours, and created an author page? These are starting points for promoting your book, which will allow you to track its visibility.

Maybe a link from your blog back to Goodreads?

Booktours are also a great way of increasing visibility. Just google "booktours" and you'll have hundreds of hits, sort through and find someone who targets your genre.

Find book clubs that read the same genre you write in, and participate in them as a reader. People there will click on your profile and find your books. Always check to see if the groups you join have a space for self-promotion, and check what the rules are (message the group moderators if you still aren't sure after looking around the group), and then post your books and links appropriately. If people in the group already know you as someone who is there to talk about books, not spam them, they will be more willing to look at your book links.

List your books with groups like this one; Making Connections; Books, Blogs, Authors, and More; and other groups that focus on author/reader interaction.

Check member blog threads in all of your groups for book bloggers who are looking for books to review.

That should get you started.

Pamela Beverly (writesistah) | 79 comments Great tips, you guys. I'm relatively new to this site also.

As for you, Jonathan, I don't understand why you say your novella isn't visible. Why is that?
