ok... Here we go. I calculated it out and it will come down to reading about 200 pages a week. The chapters in my book arent numbered, so it will make it a little difficult. Here's the tentative schedule page number wise. (If you are reading it on a nook or other ereader, just go to the start of the nearest chapter.)Week 1: Page 1-202
Week 2: Page 203- 410
Week 3: Page 411- 607
Week 4: Page 608- 807
I kind of made it easy. The beginning of each week, except for week 1 start with the Chapter "Tyrion" So look for that. I didn't include the appendices, so if you want to read those too, go for it.
Maybe I'm missing something? My book starts with the prologue and then the first chapter is "Bran" not "Tyrion". Am I the only one?
Tyrion is a few chapters in. As I understood it we are suppose to read up to that chapter in the first week. Does this sound right?
I am currently reading this book and I am way ahead but I will discuss and keep on reading ahead. My chapters are very confusing. I do not have any page numbers just chapter names, my reader is very complex. I would just like to suggest that we can discuss the chapters by writing the name of the chapter and a little hint of what the chapter is about without giving away much.
Okay and without taking away any rights from Alison... please share what do you think so far? Mariam what did you think of the first book?
First chapter is bran. I was talking about after week 1. Sorry for the confusion. And Bajen, go ahead and ask questions! I dont care! :)

If you look through the book you will see some of the same names. This is going to be confusing I think!!
Mindy wrote: "Tyrion is a few chapters in. As I understood it we are suppose to read up to that chapter in the first week. Does this sound right?"You're right Mindy!!! :) Stop when you reach the Tyrion chapters
lol of course, the names keep repeating. But then again how about hinting on what the chapter is about. Or just put in the spoiler alerts when discussing something revealing?
We could do that. I dont know how to do spoiler alerts though! :) I like the hinting on what the chapter is about suggestion.
Bajen wrote: "Okay and without taking away any rights from Alison... please share what do you think so far? Mariam what did you think of the first book?"So as not to give anything away, I’d just say you are in for one hell of an emotional roller coaster ride.
The book is absolutely brilliant. What I love most about it is Martin’s impeccably superb craftsmanship. His vocabulary is spectacular and awe-inspiring; his description of settings is simply mind blowing; and the dialogue is outstanding. But the strongest part about The Game of Thrones is the plot: it is just flawless. Period. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll get mad, you’ll get chills, you’ll feel fear. The way he handles the story is fantastic and the ending is marvelous.
My favorite characters are Arya, Tyrion, Ned, Dany, and Jon. I can’t stand Sansa, I was barely able to read her chapters. Whenever I get to her part, I feel the urge to smack her. In the face. With a table.

I agree and yes all your favorite characters are mine as well. I pity Dany a little though even though she is so brave. Tyrion is an absolute darling lol, I just love all his chapters as well.
Martin is a genius! How all these ideas came to him and how well he has woven this story is amazing.

Ditto. I don't think anything will wrack any sense into Sansa except for Joffrey's indifference.

The link looks likes it's for the HBO show, not the book :(

The HBO show has the same characters as the book, and it has a description of all the different houses and the members as well. I found it useful anyways. Sorry it didn't help you

Is Dany in the fire the last chapter for the first book?

I wasn't sure if they were the same. I will print it then!
I'm sad to say I'll probably be bowing out of this one for fear of too many spoilers. It's only day 2 and I know I won't be exactly on target most of the month! (Trying to finish The Book Thief, from the library!)Have fun everyone! :D
Bajen wrote: "I pity Dany a little though even though she is so brave. Tyrion is an absolute darling lol, I just love all his chapters as well...."I feel Dany's relationship with Drogo is handled more delicately in the TV series than the book.
(view spoiler) She's much older on screen, and Drogo is so appealing to the eyes lol
I agree, Tyrion Lannister is a darling. He's got really good lines. Fantastic lines.
Bajen wrote: "Is Dany in the fire the last chapter for the first book?..."Yes it is - exactly where the TV series (season 1) ends as well.
Bajen wrote: "So question. Sansa does not get any better after the major incident with her father?"
I guess she does. But I find myself feeling indifferent. First impressions. I don't even care what happens to her. I watched season 2 last year, can't really remember much though. Too many things going on.. but I find I'm able to read her chapters now in A Clash of Kings. We shall see.
Mekerei wrote: "Ditto. I don't think anything will wrack any sense into Sansa except for Joffrey's indifference...."
I feel she's as much responsible for what happens to her father as Joffrey is.

Oh wow. Well I am done with the book and lookinf forward to discussing with all of you guys starting it. I will not be starting the second book now though...maybe next month.

I read the series last year and Sansa is one of the more irksome characters in the first couple of books. By the third or fourth I began to soften towards her, though whether it is because of how things turn for her or because their are so many more characters I felt deserving of ire, I cannot say.

i have just finish the books last month!the chapters having the same name over and over was kind of annoying but the book is great, i loved it!
OK guys... I just read everything.Tiffani- Sorry u have to bow out, but I understand :)
I came down with a cold a few days ago and i feel miserable, so i actually havent gotten much reading done. Im going to try tonight. I like it so far.
I'm still in the first chapter, but...
What are your thoughts on Ned in the part where they find the wolves? I seem to think he is a little strict. We'll see how it plays out in the rest of the book.
I will be behind for a little while, but I try my darndest to catch up!!
Hey guys... Im reading all the posts and can we please stop talking about the tv show? I think its getting people confused (me included) since its past season 1 and the first book. I have never seen the show at all since i dont get HBO. Thank you. After the book is finished we can compare how the book and the tv show are different.
Alison wrote: "OK guys... I just read everything.Tiffani- Sorry u have to bow out, but I understand :)

Well Ned is not actually strict, as you will find later on in the book. He is a very principled man however, takes his duties very seriously. I hope you have gotten further in the reading?
Got it. Thats what i have come to the conclusion of. I was just going off of the wolf scene with the babies at the beginning. I have gotten farther!
Alison wrote: "Got it. Thats what i have come to the conclusion of. I was just going off of the wolf scene with the babies at the beginning. I have gotten farther!"In my opinion, Ned's sense of duty got him into a lot of trouble, but I guess he couldn't help it. He is who he is..
Its been about a week since we started the book, so i was wondering how everyone was coming with it? Im still a little confused on some of the characters, but Im figuring it out. Any questions so far that I or one of us can answer?
I've found that a number of people found it a bit heartless to suggest killing the dire wolf pups out of hand, rather than just let the children have them. However, what they fail to realize is that these dire wolves are huge almost as big as a horse, and are widely regarded as ferocious. In modern terms it would be like if you child found a grizzly bear cub and wanted to keep it. Telling them, absolutely not, would not be considered overly harsh. Considering there is no Animal Control to turn the cub into, leaving the option between mercy killing them or leaving them to starve to death. Plus, a lot of people even today are afraid of wolves, just out of hand. My Aunt once had a pet timber wolf she raised from a pup. She had a litter of half wolf/half malamute (their other dog was a malamute) puppies and gave one to us. She gave the others away also, but always kept track of them. She was a big wolf advocate, and had a number of strictures before we would give away one of her pup, including final approval of the name you gave the pup. Anyways, ours was the only one to survive past adulthood. Fearful neighbors killed the rest of the litter. The only reason ours survived is because we told everyone that he was malamute/german shepard. Considering how people feel about wolves as pets even in our enlightened times is it any wonder how the people in the book react around them?
As for Sansa, yes she is a spoiled brat that only cares about how she is perceived and lives in a naive fairytale fantasy. However, due to major life changing events later on, she starts to snap out of her fairy world and grow up. Then she become, if not a likable character, the at least a non detestable character.
I found killing the dire wolves harsh. I believe the children did a good job in raising them, except for one. And lets not forget the dire wolves are the Stark family sign. There is some connection between the two, and both human and wolves felt it.
Im a little behind. I am on the chapter where Bran wakes up from his fall and he has the little daydream with the crow. I was wondering everyone's take on that part with the crow when he was "falling" out of the tower. I thought it was pretty weird but I think it has significance since he woke up right after that. Better keep reading!!! :) Where is everyone page number wise? Im thinking 50 pages a day is a little harsh. Sorry about that! But just do the best you can. And if you have to go over and finish it in March, thats ok! Im gonna try not to, but im thinking that is whats gonna happen with me.
Im still behind but Im catching up fast. I was just wondering everyone's views on this question. At this point in the book, which House do you think is the strongest?
What do you think Catelyn is thinking going out by herself into danger. Do you think she will find what or who she is looking for? (If you know, please dont say anything)
Alison wrote: "Im still behind but Im catching up fast. I was just wondering everyone's views on this question. At this point in the book, which House do you think is the strongest?

Well as much as I hate to say it, I believe the Lanisters are a strong House. The number of people they can gather and command is astounding. Now the questions is, is it due to the loyalty or money?
Catelyn is a strong woman who believes she has to do all she can to keep her children safe, and at this point that is all she is worried about and nothing else.
Since the month is almost over, what did everyone think of the book? Im still in the middle of it, but Im getting there! I don't care about spoilers. Im still gonna read it anyway. Being sick at the beginning of the month and with the short month (which i forgot about) really screwed me up! Ill do my best to finish it this week. I just want to hear everyone's impressions on the Starks and Lannisters.
