While I know wholeheartedly that both the books are incomparable and absolutely amazing, I can't seem to feel as gravitated towards Wuthering Heights as I do towards Jane Eyre. What are your views?
I want to re-read both of them, and I wonder which one is a better read.

Jane Eyre is my favorite of the two. Wuthering Heights was also great.

Jane Eyre, Jane Eyre, Jane Eyre. No contest. I just feel that I can identify with Jane much better than the hapless whatsername. Oh yeah, Catherine. Jane is trying very hard to make her head rule her heart, and is willing to stay away from Mr Rochester for awhile till the situation changes. Good for her!

I have to put in a vote for Wuthering Heights. It is hands down one of the best books I ever read. I really enjoyed Jane Eyre, but it just did not move me like Wuthering Heights. A more creative story in my opinion. I could read it over and over again.

I have tried to read Wuthering Heights several times, and I've never made it through. I just lose interest. However, Jane Eyre is one of my favorites, and I've read it at least three or four times.

Having read both in high school, I must say Jane Eyre is my preferred of the two, and I'll tell you why: Once I graduated high school, I was only about halfway through reading Jane Eyre. And of all the books from high school, that was the only one I went back to read again.

Plots, meanings, and characters aside, I simply enjoyed Jane Eyre more. And when it comes down to it, isn't that why we read fiction in the first place?

I prefer Wuthering Heights because I felt so strongly about those characters, but Jane Eyre is a close second for me

they r both favourites of mine n a long time since i read them. being busy with university courses. neway returning to the books, it all depends. wuthering heights is more intense as far as i remember and leaves a lasting impression on u. after reading wuthering heights, i was full of regrets for catherine n heathcliffe. they did not get their HEA. however they got it after death lol :p while jane eyre according to me is a lighter read and thus more enjoyable. but i prefer wuthering heights. u get my point ?

Wuthering Heights is the best

Jane Eyre has remained imprinted in my memory, whereas Wuthering Heights has faded. That tells me that Jane definitely made the deeper impression. I have the desire to reread it, whereas that is not the case with WH. Hands down, Jane Eyre has my vote!

jane eyre.without question.the tone was good..so were the lead characters.. not perfect yet not selfish and hateful that you want to kill them both...
i hate the lead characters in wuthering heights . i liked linton boy and his love much better...

Wuthering Heights, no doubt.

Jane Eyre is easier read.

I love both but definitely Wuthering Heights as it is much darker than Jane Eyre and there are more levels to it.

I've never been able to like Wuthering Heights (though I've tried)! I've read it twice and watched many film adaptations. In the end, I just don't get it. None of the characters are likeable, particullarly Heathcliff and Catherine. I can feel pity for Heathcliff in the beginning, but that's the extent of my emotions towards him (beyond dislike).

Jane Eyre, on the other hand, is a wonderful novel and I fall in love with Mr. Rochester and root for Jane every time I read through it.

I prefer WH, I just found it a better story. But that being said, I enjoy depressing books with self-destructing and wild characters. There was something compelling about Heathcliff's douchebaggery that was amusing/horrifying at the same time.

jane eyre, without a doubt. Wuthering heights, while it had its good parts, was...how do I put it... annoying. The characters were whiny and spoiled. It didn't have a good ending. And am I the only one who spent 20 minutes trying to figure out what Joseph was saying?

Jane Eyre, definitely! I have loved it since I first read it, and it is still my favourite!

Wuthering Heights, I could never get into Jane Eyre, it was okay but there was a bit of a dull part for me. I never once felt that way about Wuthering Heights, I read it for the third time earlier this year and it was just as great as I had remembered it.

Jane Eyre is Magnificent. Wuthering Heights is terrible.

Jane Eyre unquestionably! Wuthering Heights is one of the most tiresome books I've ever read!

Jane Eyre is much more enjoyable. It's plot is extremely absorbing and the characters are described in a brilliant, vivid manner.

I enjoyed Wuthering Heights. It just made me angry on the part of Catherine Linton's stupidity and Linton Heathcliff wallowing in self pity. So frustrating. I loved Jane Eyre. Almost everything about it. I believe it is a better story that W H. And I love the narration in Jane Eyre. Mr. Lockwood is a very boring narrator, although Nelly was very agreeable. I just like Jane Eyre better, and I was not bored any time throughout reading it.

Jane Eyre! All the way.

Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights was just depressing with unlikable characters...

I love both, but for enjoyment alone, I think I'd choose "Jane Eyre." "Jane Eyre" affected me on an emotional level more than "Wuthering Heights" did. "Wuthering Heights" is a great story, but I think there's too much depth to make it as enjoyable to read as "Jane Eyre."

Jane Eyre is a wonderful book. Its talks about love, sacrifice and principles. Its is definitely a must read. The narration is also superior. But Wuthering Heights on the other hand broke all conventionalities. I agree none of the characters are likable but still it leaves an impact on the reader. The story is so intense, the passion so high. Its a story of Love, Hate, Revenge were uncontrolled passions play havoc. The character of Heathcliff is a complex one. He is Capable of Both Selfless Love and demonic wildness. There is also the supernatural element which worked out well. Its a depressing story which explores the darker side of human nature. Stories like these are hard to find.
Its a close call but I am a little partial to wuthering heights.

Very tough choice. Jane Eyre wins by a squeak for writing style. But my favorite story is Wuthering Heights. It's one of the choice books on my daughter's summer reading list for school. I'm hoping she picks it so we can discuss and I can get a teenage view of Heathcliff and Cathy.

I read Jane Eyre a few years ago, in English, and I didn't understand too much (I'm from Argentina), but I still liked it and thought it was a nice story, though the version I read was shorter and easier.. I read WH last summer because my Literature teacher had told me that it was a great book, but I have to say that when I read it I felt confused and lost as there were too many characters...I had to re-read the first two chapters! Although at that moment I didn't like the story that much, I realised that it was rich in descriptions and, like other comments say, it described people's feelings and thoughts which were unpleasant but real. The author shows the dark side of people through a story in which love and hate are confronted.
If I had to choose between Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, I would choose Jane Eyre just because I liked it better than the other, though I really liked both of them

When I think about it, I just want to smack Heathcliff and Cathy over and over again. How anybody can love this book is beyond me, for the characters are all that is wrong with the world.

I love Jane Eyre, but I prefer Wuthering Heights...

Jane Eyre was a bit boring while Wuthering Heights seemed denser to me. But, even so, WH immediately took my attention and I started loving the book after, let's say, 8 chapters, while I didn't feel anything special for JE (I couldn't say that I loved it, but I neither hated it). So I'd say Wuthering Heights.

HATED Wuthering Heights! So depressing and all the characters were completely unlikeable. I disliked both Catherine and Heathcliff. Jane Eyre was a great story filled with an interesting twist. Loved that book!

Of course, it's definitely a matter of opinion. I personally LOVE Jane Eyre- it's so beautifully tragic... That's sounds bad but it's the truth...
Withering heights is more of a mystery... Again, it's a matter of opinion.

*wuthering...

Jane Eyre, most definitely. Wuthering heights is fabulous, but terribly grim and depressing.

Though I never read Wuthering Heights, I've read Jane Eyre which I have absolutely loved. It became my favorite novel instantly. What I had loved about Jane Eyre was that the title character was so independently empowered. She didn't want anyone to dictate her life but at the the same time she loved passionately. She longed to live a life more adventurous and meaningful than the one she was living, (at least that's what I got out from reading it) and to me just that was so inspirational.

Vessey I fully agree with you.

I honestly find that both books have a lot in common; namely that both are grim and both involve what could only be described as "lost love". But while Wuthering Heights offers a true sense of creepiness, Jane Eyre has a superior plot.

Wuthering. Jane is great, but Wuthering is downright haunting.

jane eyre is quite much better than wuthering heights. wuthering heights is depressing and makes you feel uncomfortable while reading it

Jane Eyre by far! One of my favorite books, I was totally enthralled by it.

I've always prefered Jane Eyre.I've read it four or five times over the years, and I enjoyed it each time. I love all the books that the three Bronte sisters wrote, but this will always be my favorite, hands down!

Definitely without question Jane Eyre for me

Wuthering heights is a much darker and sinister read than Jane Eyre. It's always better when they don't live happier ever after. Cathy and Heathcliff are much more believable than Rochester and the mad lady upstairs

Jane Eyre, but I read it couple years ago and don't know if I would like it as much as I do, if i read it now. I read Wuthering Heights last month and enjoyed it. I think this book seemed much more interesting in the beginning, though.

Jane Eyre. Heathcliff scared me too much.

Mr. Rochester's ex-wife pales in comparison.

It's hard to compare these books, they are both totally amazing! I would have to say I prefer Jane Eyre because it is a more moralistic novel; whereas Wuthering Heights is a fatalistic novel. Still I would encourage you to read both of them because our lives include both day and night and you see two perspectives in these novels.

I adored both. The love Heathcliff and Kathy shared was soul shredding, and while it was difficult to love either character, their love for one another overshadowed everything else, and it was a redemptive force like none other. It reminds me so much of "The Bet" by Franchette Phal. BUT... hands down Jane Eyre is my favorite!

Vessey Riley, your comment was the best one so far. I feel exactly the same way. It's like you've read my thoughts. :) ...more

No contest for me, Jane Eyre.

I would read Jane Eyre again but you can't beat the classics, they are great to read over and over again.

Jane Eyre!
