Patricia (deathserum) I've been thinking about a movie being made for TFiOS and I'm having mixed feelings about it so I thought that, if you've read the book, it would be good to discuss the pros and cons of having a TFiOS film adaptation.

Patricia (deathserum) I don’t know how I feel about a TFiOS movie. I enjoy books because I can imagine how the world and the characters are. I like how I play things out in my head and I like how I imagined the characters to be like. I like analyzing things that happen in the book. The TFiOS movie may ruin this for me. They’ll set out the world for me and the actors who play Hazel or Augustus may have exactly the same characteristics described in the book but I like how the characters look in my head, but once actors have been assigned for the role, I can’t unsee them as the character anymore. For example, every time I read The Hunger Games, Katniss always looks like Jennifer Lawrence to me. I don’t even remember how I imagined Katniss before the movie.
I have mixed feeling about a TFiOS movie. It’s great that TFiOS is such a great book that they want to make a film adaptation but I feel like TFiOS is too amazing to be made into a film. It’s one of those books that belongs only to the reader and I feel like making it a movie would be breaking my ownership with it, almost betraying it. Also, I don’t want it to become a cliche movie. I don’t want people to tell me how they love the movie but doesn’t appreciate the book. So I’m not sure if I’m excited or worried about a movie if it will ever be made.

Andi I feel the same way, in the sense that movies often destroy the characters and setting that I have already developed. I loved that book. I bawled with that book. I have bought and sent many copies of that book to those I love. In fact, I feel very protective of it and would hate to see a movie ruin it.

On the other hand, as a middle school librarian, I have seen the power of books turned into movies. They really get the kids reading. It seems odd, since I am a staunch believer in reading a book before ever watching the movie. For my kids though, I think they're less daunted by a book, since they have the background from the movie.

I think we should be asked to be reviewers of the movie script before allowing anyone to continue. :)

Patricia (deathserum) At first, I was hyped about the idea of the film adaptation but then I started thinking, "What if the film doesn't do the book justice?" And I guess that's what I'm mostly worried about.

Haley I loved this book SO MUCH. It was one that I had heard good things about and ran across while I had a layover in an airport, so I just got it and started it. Loved it from page one, and John Green's writing is simply incredible in all his books. The story hit home, too, because while it was hilarious and the humor was right up my alley, I've had to deal with cancer impacting far too many people in my life. I felt like I could really relate to it, even though I'm not the one with cancer.

That being said, I don't want it to be a movie. Not at all. I get that it could be really fun to see on screen, and I even understand that the actors and the writers and the directors could be absolutely fantastic. This book is just so special to me as a book. Hearing Hazel's thoughts and she and Gus' easy banter; everything was so clear and perfect in my head that seeing it in theaters would just take that away from me. There are some books that I love too much to want to share with the world in the form of a film. This is one of them :/

Joana | 1 comments This is one of most amazing books I have ever read. In my opinion everyone should read it. Would it be a good idea to make one film based on this novel?... Well, maybe it would be a great film but it might, also, change our initial idea about the story. I mean, everyone has a different way to see things and the way I imagine it probably isn't the same way others imagine each character and each scenery. If they make a movie based on this book I'll be glad to see it. Maybe it is excellent. We don't know.

Santino (tinoprinzi) I've seen everyone reading this book and making lots of fuss about it, and I saw when food shopping the other day and I thought, 'hey, it's only £3, so if its not actually that good then so what?'

I started reading it exactly 24 hours ago and, if I didn't have work, I'm sure I would've finished it already! It's so good! All I ask is that if they do make a film of it, they strive to achieve what 'perks of being a wallflower' achieved - make it as good as the book!

Jack (jack_) I think a film adaption would be great. I'd definitely go see it, but probably wouldn't be as the book.

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 1597 comments I hope that book turns into a movie because i would like to see that movie

message 10: by Alex (new)

Alex I really really hope that John Green himself gets a lot of say considering this movie because ... wait what was that, isn't it the same producer who did Twilight or something?

Although I must say that Shailene Woodley is the PERFECT Hazel in my opinion...

Yusreen | 21 comments I hope they don't ruin the movie (andd the book), but a movie adaptation would be great. I think Liana Liberato would be a great Hazel :)

message 12: by Livy (new)

Livy | 13 comments I just don't want to lose the book version of Hazel that I have in my mind. The actress they chose seems to fit as Hazel and as long as John Green is truly pleased with the adaptation of the movie than I'll be good with it too. I only hope they keep to the book as best as they can. What I really fear is that the movie will cause TFiOS to have a ton of hype and it'll become one of those books that people list as their favorite just because it's popular and everybody knows it, like what sort of happened with the Hunger Games. I hate when that happens!

To be honest, I don't think any actor can even remotely match the characters in the book. Like, Hazel is a very unique character and I don't see anyone else playing Hazel and I actually quite dislike Shailene Woodley. She's playing too many characters she's not fit for (I got over the fact she's Tris for Divergent but she also took Mary Jane in Amazing Spiderman 2 and I'm not very happy). As for whoever plays Augustus Waters, no one can play Augustus Waters because SPOILER only Augustus Waters can play Augustus Waters and Augustus Waters is dead. END OF SPOILER

So I'm really not happy with the movie to be honest, now that I have a feeling of what the cast will be like. It can be an amazing movie but I like TFiOS only as a book.
