Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 3595 comments What I've liked about this group from the beginning is its propensity for considering all opinions. For accepting a little bile without rancor. If I say something a member doesn't like, I don't think that should be met with an invitation to leave.

message 102: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't want you to leave, Scout, and you know it. We've had conversations away from here. You know that I just don't understand.

Aliyah | 369 comments who is whareverishisname? was this an ex TC member or a troll?

message 105: by [deleted user] (new)

Troll.

message 106: by Aliyah (new)

Aliyah | 369 comments something that I want to point out is that my authenticity/sincerity seems to be in question. To everyone who reads my somewhat strange/odd comments, I tried to get my points across without typing too much to an audience that is mainly based in the US and UK. Therefore I make use of movie references and silly Americanisms and Britishisms. I realize that this makes me seem fake or a troll and childish. So I will be typing comments with the use of South African English. Sorry @ Amelia for reading/responding my comments in the other thread called "disappointments".

I was close. Ten years with a South African and I can butcher a phrase with the best of them.

message 113: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments I liked hogtieing the asteroid. It is way cooler than lassoing the moon.

message 114: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, and allow for the errors of Google traslator!

Aliyah | 369 comments lol do you know Afrikaans? I've always assumed that you were Latina or Greek-American. *Looks at surname * . My Afrikaans is nie goed nie, maar ek kan probeer om te gesels lekker in Afrikaans.

Pi spent quite a bit of time in South Africa. Kevin volunteers there fairly regularly, as well. :) I wish I could find it, but at one time Pi and Kevin talked about a brand of soda that she could only find in South Africa and the entire discussion fascinated the crap out of me.

message 118: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I think Kevin volunteers in Kenya. We either talked about Stoney or Iron Brew.

Not sure what hogtying and asteroid entails, but yes, I can understand Afrikaans (in its written form at least).

janine | 7709 comments This song in Afrikaans is pretty great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNkrDC...

Yesh, Iron Brew. That was popular in England as well. I never cared for it, but lots of my friends did.

My wife's family is in Durban and in Centurion, between Pretoria and Joburg. I've been around KZN and Gauteng and Mpumalanga. I've never been to Cape Town though I'd like to go.

I have a friend that lives in Somerset West. Actually, I used to babysit her when she was a little girl. She did Peace Corps in Uganda after college and fell in love with a boy from SA. :)

That's still complicated here despite Maryland's step forward, but we were married in your fine country six years ago.

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments I can't understand spoken Afrikaans at all, but I am sometimes able to understand simple written constructions insofar as they resemble standard Dutch--a language that I tend to mangle a bit, although I do enjoy trying to use it when the occasion arises.
