Okay, I think I've rated most of the crap I read during the last 20 years. But now I learn I'm supposed to review this stuff and create cute li'l bookshelves for it.

I decided against listing any books by Dr. Seuss, because they all seem to have blurred together in my mind. What the hell happened in Hop on Pop? Is that the one where Pop gets hopped on?

I realize that I'm very stingy with 5-star ratings. But I expect a lot of bang for my buck from these literary bitches.

the rating of the books is difficult. i've noticed on everyone's profile that they also give your average rating. i am happy that you can change your ratings -- recently i was looking at something i'd rated -- and i thought, i gave that two stars? what the hell~! so then i switched it to a one and started thinking of all the books i don't like and sought them out and gave them one star too. very satisfying. ;)

Martha Kate | 198 comments Adrian, please tell me you remember the critical moment in "Hop on Pop" when Mr. Brown and Mr. Black have a snack just before Mr. Brown leaves town, or the narrator's epiphany when he discovers "that thing can sing." Please reconsider your rating...

I must have blocked that out. But I recall somewhere else in the complete works the Doctor demands of his reader: "Would you do it in a boat? Would you do it with a goat?"

I imagine he was breathing heavily when he wrote it.

I'm just glad "Somebody" has more books on thier shelves than Ben! I tried going through his list to beef up my own but I only avg. 3 out of his 20. And I stopped at page 35. But I'm not competitive or anything. No pressure.

So what does each star mean to you? Is that a stupid question? I feel that it might be.

Is it something like this:

One Star = Gouge out my ripening wheat eyes
Two stars= I allow the eyes to remain but i am not happy about it.
etc.

I think the stars rating system can be hard to go on if you don't any qualitative data to work with. thoughts, anyone?

Welll... When you hold your mousy pointer over the stars to rate a book each one tells you exactly what it means.

One star didnt like it
two stars it was ok
etc.

I think if you hated a book you could give it no stars and a scathing review.

that might work. dont over think it.

i use the definitions goodreads gives me for each star (5 = "amazing," 2 = "it was okay," etc.)... i don't try to rate things relative to one another (the complete works of william shakespeare and charles harness's the paradox men both get 5 stars), just in accordance to how much i enjoyed them when i read them.

it's entirely unthought-out and feeling-based (like the rest of my life).

Damn, I guess I never noticed that. Maybe I am just too impatient to get messages from a static pointer. Thanks for pointing this out Margaret, I might need to revisit the books I have rated now!

Purely an entertainment/information rating based soley against itself.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh yea! on another note. When you become a fan of authors they are placed in a standing and you are supposed to "manage" thier order. WTF.

I guess that is the same way I rate them, from an enjoyment standpoint. I imagine rating them relative to each other would be nearly impossible having just five stars in which to do so.

I saw that Margaret! I just like them but I don't like them in a particular order. Why isn't there an option for that (I haven't looked but maybe there already is).

you can't like all your children the same amount, guys... be honest...

message 15: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 16, 2009 08:24PM) (new)

but seriously the nepotism factor is there.

And Ben I love all my kids the same amount just in different ways.

There should be a randomise button like with your friends on myspace.

If I dont like a book I rarely finish it and if I dont finish it I dont review it so there's that

Me too. I started a shelf "quit reading".

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

And another thing.. Not only do you "Have to" order your authors, you "cant" order your Quotes. Or comment on other peoples quotes.

Great idea, Margaret! And sounds like you should make some suggestions...

hey suggesteroonies:

these are great suggestions to make -- you may want to add them to the goodreads to-do list: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/9...

it's in the official goodreads feedback group, and it looks like the encourage people to post their support for whatever changes you would like to see. :)

and now back to ratings talk: i was happy for them to give me a ranking -- i'm sure if it had been left to me, i would have dithered and never been able to figure out 5 distinguishable choices. ultimately, i'm surprised i have any books rated 3 at all -- i thought i was either hot or cold -- on books, and on everything. maybe i'm more tepid as i get older.

. . .all i know is, since all you fictionphiles joined goodreads, lulu's rating has plummeted from a 4.10 to 3.94 . . . so much for nepotism!

Yeah, isn't that like .16? Not even a whole star? Or a half star?
