I have read about six times over the past eight years. I learned to read with this book and continue to read often. Through Burnett’s book I discovered the importance of always having hope. I would recommend this book because it has held a significant place in my life. Throughout difficult times, the story gave me ways to cope with my struggles and I have used the main character’s method of pretending to make my own life enjoyable. Her way of creating stories spontaneously inspired me to write my own. My favorite part is when she says, “Whatever comes cannot alter one thing. If I am a princess in rags and tatters, I can be a princess inside. It would be easy to be a princess if I were dressed in cloth of gold, but it is a great deal more of a triumph to be one all the time when no one knows it.” because it connects so well with my belief that if the Lord is King of Kings and I am his child, then that makes me a princess too.

I read this book a long time ago. As a child, I seem to remember having the impression that she was a very good girl, and that she made good behavior so appealing to me. If it is what I remember then it is definitely a great book for little girls to read... especially the naughty ones. :)
I remember watching the movie every time I went to my grandma's house. One day we were shopping and I saw this book and brought it and i still love it
One of my very favorite children's books. I love that Sara can ACT like a princess, even when she is living the life of a maid of all work. It's all in the attitude!
I love this book so much. I had read it via audiobook and then bought the book just to possess it. There are so many great moral values in this book. I feel like this book was made for all ages!
Love! Love! this book! Sara Crewe and her fall from riches to rags. I love that both "A Little Princess" and "The Secret Garden" has its roots in India, which brings a multi-layered read to a child. When I read these books decades ago, the world was not as multicultural as it is currently, and it was a more complex story for children because of its historical, as well as cultural narratives with the background of British Imperialism.
And, as children, we all learned more about the world through books, didn't we?
This book has one oft he best messages I've ever heard from a story. A lot of people misinterpret the "princess" motif as meaning that all girls should be self-absorbed and spoiled. What it really means though is that all girls are unique and important and should be loved simply for being who they are. My name is Sarah and I just loved this story since the time I was eight. It's a real classic; the kind of book that never goes out of style.
I think it was Gloria Vanderbilt who said that "the poorest girl on the block can be a 'thoroughbred.'" It is the same with Sarah Crew, who as I wrote previously, went form riches to rags. Whether one is rich, or poor, it is the elements of value that make up a person - their qualities, integrity, kindness which define them. Sarah proved her worth, despite her hardships.
Yes, I agree that this story by Frances Hodges Burnett is a classic. It also offers a historical look at a child's experience during the time of British rule in India. How many books today offer that historical aspect for children in what now is termed, "middle grade?" "A Little Princess" was originally shelved (I believe) as a "Juvenile" fiction, as the categories we have today did not exist when Ms. Burnett wrote the novel, or even in the 1960's.
I wish more books would be written like this. The illustrations by Tasha Tudor were wonderful too. The same writer/illustrator worked together as a team on "The Secret Garden" as well. "A Little Princess" should be required reading in schools today!

It really is so inspiring and hopefull. Most of the time I was just mad about all the horrible things that were being done to Sarah, but when I take a step back and look at the big picture it really is a wonderfull book.
This book was my favorite all throughout childhood for that exact reason. It inspires hope and goodness.
In my honest opinion, Sara's ups and downs life is very inspiring and her life before in a boarding school is full of joy.
This book is one of the few best classics that you can pick up every year to have a light read!! Also one of my all time fav childhood read, just love it!
