Girl mage in school- SOLVED [s]

Ok, I don't remember much about this book so bear with me and any help I could get is much appreciated.

I read it about 7 or 8 years ago so a lot of the details are fuzzy. There was a young girl in a kingdom I believe living as an orphan. One day she is cornered by guards and lets out magic she didnt know she had. There is a school in this city that is just for people with gifts like this and it is very important that they find this girl or her unused power could take out everyone. They end up finding her and taking her into custody where she begins studying to control her powers and what not. I think she has a mentor at the school, and the school is divided into different types of magic. I think 4. I don't really remember much else other than the people in the book had a spell that made a ball of light for them to see in the dark that they used all the time. I think there was also a dark mage that lived outside the kingdom and that a sword was somehow important to the story or something.

Any ideas? Sorry its so vague, Im not even sure if these details are real or other stories I've read mixing me up. Any help is much appreciated!
