Steven Drachman | 169 comments I trust them to pay for downloads. There's an automated kindle page that ticks up one whenever you get a download. working a fraud into their program would be more risk than it was worth. They make more money when they can demonstrate smashing success and can lure in more indie authors. (If they get a million indie authors who sell 200 kindle books each, that's not a lot of money for each author, but it's at least $100 million for kindle. Ripping us off would hurt them more than it'd help.)

Anyway, prove me wrong, but I think it's on the up and up. (Looking at my miserable January sales though, I'd like to think there's been some mistake!)

Sylvie | 61 comments I've been wondering the same as David P, as I know copies of my books have been downloaded but so far no money. Perhaps you have to sell a magic number before you get paid. Better take it up with Kindle.

Steven Drachman | 169 comments Sylvia - Go to kdp.amazon.com, log in, click self publishing, then click reports. That will show you how many kindle downloads you have. You are right, you don't get paid automatically after each sale. The report is updated very often, at least once a day, so it's a quicker indicator of your sales than waiting to get laid.

Hannah (normalgirl) | 398 comments I think that there is a min. of 10 dollars one has to meet, before one gets paid...at least that is for me on Createspace. AND just because someone said they bought it does not mean that they did. I know that by experience...lol.

message 5: by Sylvie (new)

Sylvie | 61 comments Thanks Steven, Hannah. I see that one of mine has some downloads as matching free downloads - not sure what that means. The other one is enrolled in KDP Select and I forgot to untick the box which automatically re-enrolls it. So I really must pull myself together.

message 6: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (normalgirl) | 398 comments It means that you will not be paid for those, because they were downloaded for free. That is what free downloads mean.

message 7: by Monica (new)

Monica Davis Heads up. Along these lines...it's a good idea to download a "sample" of your own book from time to time to see what you get. For a period in December my entire book was being given away when a "sample" was downloaded from Amazon. (Sample should be about 10% or so of the book.) It took me 2 weeks, and numerous email & phone calls to get this fixed. I was told it was a "system glitch", and not an isolated case. Don't know how widespread it was, or still may be.

Yes, but I don't why they were free downloads!

Hannah (normalgirl) | 398 comments Coupons? Free promotion? Free sample that was a little too long like Monica stated. Also an amazon prime member can borrow one book for free a month. It could have came from there. Don't authors just love that. Sarcasm intended.

message 10: by Steven (new)

Steven Drachman | 169 comments You get paid for borrows.

message 11: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (normalgirl) | 398 comments Really? Where did you read this? I'd like to read it, because I didn't know. Another author informed me of this and I have to be misinformed.

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 199 comments Hannah, that's part of the deal with KDP Select. There is a pool of funds, set every month, that enrolled authors share based on how many borrows they have. Otherwise no one would ever sign up, as they would be making their books available for free to any Kindle owner who chose to borrow it.

You can find the description of the KDP Select program on Amazon.com. Search for Kindle Publishing Programs.

KDP (not Select, because I didn't enroll) pays me regularly, but at an offset of 60 days. So I sold copies last June but received royalties only at the end of August. If you don't earn royalties of $10 in a given month, as noted above, they hold the payment until 60 days after you do. And even if you signed up for 70% royalties and set your price to qualify for that, sales in some countries earn only 35%. That last bit may be different for KDP Select authors.

I have only Amazon.com's word for how many copies were downloaded, but the reports are very clear and easy to access. Also, remember that the whole system is managed by computers. The company would have to program the machines not to count certain sales. They could do that, of course, but the only real response by the authors would be not to offer their books for sale. I don't think I'm ready to take that step.

Note that Apple doesn't pay squat until you earn $150, and then you wait 30-60 days. So Kindle and CreateSpace (which pays after 30 days if you earn $10) look pretty good.

Hope that helps.

Go to the KDP page and sign in.
Click on REPORTS at the top of the page.
Click on MONTH TO DATE
Choose country in the drop down box VIEW REPORT FOR
Blue columns from left to right are
Title, B number , Units Sold, Units Refunded, Net units sold, Units Borrowed, FREE UNITS PROMO

Repeat for all countries

That's fine, John.
Now Arkopaul has it in two versions.
Just a wee warning about those forums. You sometimes get very nasty folk on there who can pick on you and dole out abuse all of a sudden - can be upsetting.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Sadly, yes. I was just asking an innocent question about Novel Rank and these two American women rounded on me - calling me arrogant and worse. Not the sort of stuff usually dealt out to 78 year old ladies ...
Looking into your books now, John. Your own life seems a book in itself (not The Wiz of Oz :-) )

Caroline Does anyone know about iTunes e-reads?
I have two books on KDP and am wondering what to do with my third.
Maybe I should put it on iTunes and Amazon as an e-read without the KDP.
Thoughts??

Thank you and no, you didn't misread it. That's great information! Their(smashwords) formatting is very difficult, as I tried it to no avail, but a friend of mine says he goes there all the time for books.

Okay, so in essence I could do the KDP for 3-6 months, then unroll and distribute to all other places.

This sounds like a possible plan. Thank you.
