I must be one of the few who does not want an Ereader, Itunes, a Nook, a Kindle and all the other tech gadgets.

I want to hold a book in my hands.

I do agree that eBooks are extremely convenient. However, ownership of eBooks must be questioned. For example, Amazon denied access to a user's library after mistakenly linking their account to one who had violated policy. She was unable to access her eBooks and her kindle began to show stripes.

Released statement:
"Per our Conditions of Use which state in part: Amazon.co.uk and its affiliates reserve the right to refuse service, terminate accounts, remove or edit content, or cancel orders at their sole discretion.

Please know that any attempt to open a new account will meet with the same action."

Though the above occurred under extreme circumstances, Amazon specifically states that they can edit your library whenever they please. The article (listed below) goes on to say that you basically lease eBooks and never truly own them.

I got a little off topic, but I came across this information last night. Despite it being almost 7 months old.

Robbie It bothers me how much it cost to download ebooks. It's just data, the cost should be significantly cheaper.

I have been known to read a book on e-reader and then go buy the actual book to add to my library. I also like downloading books to my computer and then on to a thumb drive and then I do truly own them..

Oh No, Kyle, You are NOT the only one! I only use the reader on my phone to read the NYTimes.
On my computer I read a few FREE magazines, that come with my print subscription. The rest are just printed books, dude.
I stare at computer screens enough every day, why increase that time exponentially with the truckload of reading I do each day for pleasure!
No way! For that, give me the feel, ease & look of REAL paper!

message 306: by [deleted user] (new)

Amen to that, Annie!

I'm sick and fed up with ads. Even GR has talking ads now.

Yeah, and the whole concept of paying NOT to HAVE ads in my Email is NONSENSE! It would be worth it for my paper mail! I'd pay $1/mo for no more ads in my mailbox, but electronically? Inconvenient, yes, but I can ignore them!

message 309: by [deleted user] (new)

Agreed. It's outrageous! They get on my nerves but I try to ignore them.

message 310: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments There are free extensions for Chrome and Firefox that block ads completely.

message 311: by [deleted user] (new)

I have Google Chrome. How do I install these free extensions that block the ads, Jon?

message 312: by Jon (last edited Jul 04, 2013 12:15AM) (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Hey Kyle, this is the link https://chrome.google.com/webstore/de...

Just click 'add to Chrome' and then follow the instructions. You might need to restart Chrome for it to take effect.
There are also other cool extensions there you might be interested in.

message 313: by [deleted user] (new)

Many thanks, Jon!

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Any time. Let me know whether it worked.

I'm trying to inform more people about this because it makes surfing the web much less frustrating.

Some sites even ask you to pay for a monthly "premium" membership so you could browse their site without ads... Ridiculous. If anything, they should pay us for the privilege of advertising to us without consent.
I do hope goodreads never resorts to this "premium" membership tactic.

OK, end of rant. Sorry :)

message 315: by [deleted user] (new)

Will do.

Indeed...a lot less frustrating. A monthly premium? The way things are going I shouldn't be surprised. Exactly right: they should pay us.

I hope GR doesn't resort to that, too.

No, it was a very informative rant.:)

message 316: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments @Kyle
(warning: another rant)

I just read an article saying Google and other big companies pay Adblock Plus (not the extension you installed but a similar one - no relation besides the name) to whitelist them, meaning the extension won't block the ads they pay them not to block. It's baffling and also dishonest in a way. The Adblock Plus guys come up with a great product that blocks ads, then someone pays them enough money and they immediately sell out on their noble idea.

I don't know whether Adblock (our extension, not Adblock Plus) does the same. I hope not, but Google has a lot of money set aside for 'convincing' purposes.

Luckily most of the companies with the annoying ads don't have that kind of money :)

NEPH RAN (nephran-natheniel) | 70 comments the bbc text service as posted that 61% of all internet traffic is done by things called 'BOTS'. Am I me or are we meses? What a question to have to answer!!

message 318: by [deleted user] (new)

@Jon

Outrageous! Dishonest is right! They sold themselves out, these Adblock guys. Money and greed talk, don't they?

I hope you're right about Google and lack of funds for those companies with the annoying ads.

@NEPH
BOTS? We are messes. A question we shouldn't have to answer!!

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 451 comments Yeah I agree

What's the book about that your reading?

message 330: by Michael (new)

Michael (micky74007) I'll take the rain any day. Gloomy days match my personality I guess. But I do like grey, blustery weather. Makes the tea taste so much better!

message 331: by [deleted user] (new)

Rain is better than snow, that's for sure.
