Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) Nothing here. I was just feeling happy yesterday because of the sun. It's fairly sunny today too. Do y'all get that? When there's good weather, everything just feels more positive?

Yes, absolutely. As evidenced by today and it's now dreary. And it's forecast to be dreary right through the weekend. So now I'm mopey. Not unhappy, just not sunshiney.

BattyKat (prosserkat) The past week+ has been in the low 70s and GORGEOUS.

But, of course, this is Spring and it's Boise, so it's to be expected. Honestly, I'd rather then rain so we're not in drought-like conditions so early in the summer.

We get fires pretty bad around here in the late summer.

Kat she has a kindle to and she told me that they are suspose to hold like 3500 books. hers is a old one. I do know she preferrs the actual books though. I want a e-reader but not sure which kind yet. yes her library is very large and she lets people check them out. She has been reading and creating a library for years since we were kids. I know when she got married one trip in her van was nothing but books...hahaha

message 208: by Cherrelle (new)

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) Whisper! That is insane!

I thought the kindle could only hold a couple of thousand books... I dunno for sure though.

message 209: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments I try to keep on my Kindle only around 100 of the books I want to read in the near future, and even those I organize into groups. It's much easier to browse through them and find what I want to read next.
The rest of my library I keep on my computer and browse in Calibre (a highly recommended program!).

I have not heard of that program Jon..

message 213: by Cherrelle (new)

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) Calibre is great. It's a program used to convert and transfer ebooks to an e-reader (I'm pretty sure it's not only for Kindles, is it?).

I have to say, I don't buy a lot of books now that I can get them online for free. For one, I don't have the space for physical books at the moment, and I simply do not have the money to buy books...

I don't know what you all think about piracy, but I'm usually fairly honest when I do it. Not that I go to the authors or other companies and tell them, of course...

message 214: by Jon (new)

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Calibre has support for many devices, including smartphones.
It's also great as a standalone program if you want to organize your library on the computer. Lots of useful features.

Step 1: Grab a ten-foot pole.
Step 2: Do not touch said topic with it.

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) Aha! Gotcha Jon! And thanks for the info about Calibre!

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 45 comments I know this is mostly a UK thing, but apparently people from other countries have strong opinions on what's going on with Thatcher's death too.

So what do you think about people from the UK celebrating Margaret Thatcher's death and trying to get "Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead" up to number 1 in the charts this week? Do you think the BBC should play the song or just skip over it?

Personally, I think it's good that people are expressing their feelings about her death like this. The media, at first, was trying to make out that she was a great person and the whole country will miss her. What we've done by buying this song is tell the world how all the working class really feel about Margaret Thatcher.
I also think it'd be wrong for the BBC to censor what makes it into the charts.

No! Lilac! It's terrible. Imagine how her family feels. I think it's disgraceful. She's dead now so what does it matter. I would never be so cruel to her loved ones. They should not play the song on the charts today. I hope others agree with me on this.

message 218: by Lilac (last edited Apr 14, 2013 05:42AM) (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 45 comments They're not trying to disrespect her family, only to show that they are against her, and what she did to this country. And that they don't feel that £10,000 of their taxes should go to giving a woman who made their lives so much harder a huge send off.

message 219: by Jack, Founder (last edited Apr 15, 2013 09:18AM) (new)

Listen, I don't care if people hated her. She did terrible things to Ireland too, but what does it matter now, she's gone. And I don't care what anyone says, it's very upsetting to the family. Even if they're not trying to hurt the family, it's totally hurtful. Imagine her young grandchildren. I don't think I could bear that if it was my mother. And I can tell you this, if it was a male leader, this would not be happening. She was the first woman to work her way up to leadership, and people didn't like that. I don't care what she did. It's terrible what they're doing. It's the cruellest thing ever.

message 220: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 45 comments I don't believe people are doing this because she's a woman at all.
Part of the reason they voted her in in the first place was probably to do with her being a woman. To prove that this country was becoming equal to both genders. And sure, it'll likely be a long time before another woman prime minister is voted in, because of the disaster of the first female prime minister. But that's not the reason people are glad she's dead.
People are glad she's dead because she messed up their lives. Thousands lost work because of her. Thousands became homeless. She messed with the heads of a whole generation of children brought up in her time.

The working class part of this country is trying to say that they are not happy with what she did. And they are not happy that Thatcherism (as it's being called) is still living.

(I do agree that it's quite sickening that someone's death is being celebrated, but there is reason behind it. It's not just to be stupid and upset her family.)

message 221: by Lilac (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 45 comments I'm not taking part in any of that stuff, it all happened before I was born. But I think it's okay for those who suffered during her time as PM to express themselves, as long as it's not doing any real damage.

message 222: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
I know, I just don't think it's right for people to do this. We understand what she did, we don't need to torture her loved ones for it. She was called the Iron Lady because she didn't care what people thought about her. Now that she's dead people are expressing her anger, but to who, she's dead! Her family are getting the sharp point of it. Everyone already knows that we all hated her, why go buying a song that doesn't change anything at all?!

message 223: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
And they are doing really bad damage. And they've always expressed themselves. Why do it when she's dead and she's not there to hear it, not that she would care, hence Iron Lady

totally agree with this line Jack.

I also think that most people downloading and spreading this song on social networking sites seem to have been born since she left power and so don't really have any true idea of what she did or didn't do for this country. I think they see it as just another viral craze to do....like post videos of Gangnam style!

I didn't day it was because she was a woman, I said it wouldn't be happening if it was a man. Believe it or not, men like to be in control and some don't like to see powerful women.

Just because she was a woman doesn't mean another woman leader won't be voted in. And to be honest men are just as bad leaders. I hope another woman will be voted in. Unfortunately there ha never been a woman Taoiseach in Ireland, but there had been women presidents and they were some of our best presidents.

message 227: by Lilac (last edited Apr 14, 2013 08:09AM) (new)

Lilac (lilac_wales) | 45 comments I know men are just as bad leaders, but some people will be apprehensive of voting another woman in because the only experience they've had with a woman leader has been bad. Thatcher has created a sort of prejudice against female Prime Ministers.
I too hope another woman is voted in sometime, but I don't want one voted in simply because she's a woman. I want one voted in only if she'll make a good Prime Minister.

But, yeah, I'm sticking by what I said. I'm happy that people are celebrating. It's natural to be happy when a "baddie" dies, even at the expense of their family. They're just celebrating that Margaret Thatcher can never do anything bad again.

message 228: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
I think it's cruel, that the family has to pay.

message 229: by Pink (new)

Pink Not sure she was that much of a baddie all things considered, not that I was a fan either. I suspect she was just vilified more in the press, mostly because she was a woman. I think Tony Blair has done some bad things too sanctioning war against Iraq, but I can't imagine people going to the same lengths to "celebrate" if he died. As much as people say its a political thing, I don't buy that, I just don't think she would have been made into this big symbol of hatred if she'd been a man. I also think that people who hold her up as a reason not to have more females in power are judging half our species with one paint brush and by my standards that's just plain old sexism.

i agree the song should not be played... although a strange sort and not really a favorite... she has family and they loved her.. good and bad.. and it would be a very disrespectful hurtful thing to do.. Sometimes you act as a bigger person by simply walking away and letting it be.. enough..

The time to express it was when she was living and could defend herself.. In death... its one sided... before becoming a leader she was a woman with family it they felt they needed to take a stand it should have been before her death.. to me it is as bad as people who protest the war at a loved one's funeral...

I myself would feel the need to forgive her... not drag her through the mud there are respectful ways to show your feelings..I can't agree..with what they are doing...it goes back to treat others as you would want to be treated.. I would hate to think someone would hold something I done against my family and making them feel bad for loving me...In the end we all pay and answer to a higher being in my belief and its not my place to hurt others because someone kin to them made mistakes.

Hear, hear! I agree with everything you've said here. The disrespectful way people have been reacting to her death is alarming. There is a line between expression and freedom of speech and ideas, and actually celebrating someone's death. She wasn't in power at the time she died, so her death should not be a political issue. And I absolutely, 100% believe that this would not be happening if she were a man. It's disgraceful and saddening.

Pink I agree we should leave the discussion there.....so on a brighter note what shall we chat about now?

For something lighthearted....how about discussing our plans for the evening, haha. Mine are to prise myself away from GR, read a chapter or two of The Selfish Gene, feed my 4 cats, chat with my daughter some more about her GCSE and A level choices as she's been worrying about them, do some washing and load the dishwasher, check my son is still alive in his bedroom where he's been since getting home from school, then go to bed - exciting Monday night stuff!

On another note my daughter has just started reading The Hobbit and so I suggested doing a buddy read with her as I'm planning to start it this week - she rolled her eyes and suggested I should spend less time on GR!

Sounds like a nice Monday... I will arrive home from work fix supper.. my hubby and son want BBQ ham with scallop potatoes.. My hubby will go to the auction at 8 pm and I will get my bass out and pluck a little bit of Kin Croche time in a bottle. usually my son will play along on his guitar from his bedroom... but I can hear it and will smile.. then after a hour we will feed the 7 birds and let them out for some love and popcorn.. they will giggle and talk and till about 10:30. Then Ustee will announce "go night night" so up they all go and I wind down with a book... I usually don't have school work on Monday so its pretty even steady relaxing...
I haven't read the Hobbit yet either. It is on my list but a little ways down lol...
