Sophia | 60 comments I grew up in Canada, where Easter is a bit of a family holiday. Yes, we went to Church on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, but then on Easter Monday we went to my Grandparents' house and so did my cousins and enjoyed a nice big turkey dinner followed by an Easter egg hunt.

Now I live in Australia. My Dad is going to prepare a roast dinner for my sister and I on Sunday, but to most Australians, especially those who aren't religious, Easter is just another long weekend. You might go to the fair and you will certainly eat chocolate, but as far as I can tell that's about it...

Sophia | 60 comments I grew up in Ontario, in a smallish town called Owen Sound on Georgian Bay. It's about a two hour drive north-west of Toronto.

Did everyone read the blog post? Amazon and GR. This does not sound good. I'm a bit confused. The blog post doesn't give much information.

Katherine | 610 comments Media reports seem to ne positive enough

In the feedback group, it's very negative. And I'm starting to get worried. People are deleting their accounts and reviews and ratings etc.

message 157: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
Yep, they're exporting their books and reviews and then deleting their accounts.

message 158: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
That what nothing to do with Amazon.

message 159: by April (new)

April (ajoys) where can I read the blog about this?

Otis Chandler announced it in the goodreads blog. But there are many news stories about it.

Holly | 64 comments Wow, I had no idea it has gotten this bad.

April (ajoys) Thanks everyone! Going read these now!

Jon (jon17) | 372 comments Good for:
Amazon ($$$)
Owners of goodreads ($$$)
Some authors
Some publishers
Some Amazon customers

Bad for:
Us

This is scary but we should give it time before we overreact and abandon the community we've built here.

It's a rather disturbing development really that our reading habits & personal book preferences are now owned by a mega-corporation who will likely want to leverage such for profit.

I really liked using Goodreads to keep track of my reading, especially the stats page.

message 166: by April (new)

April (ajoys) I agree Jon, I 'm not going to abandon my account on goodreads just yet. Beside I just found this great group Goodreads All Sorts!

message 167: by Pink (new)

Pink hmm, I just read the links. I like amazon and use it for most of my book purchases, not all but most. I also like goodreads and love the social side of the site. Other things I don't like so much, such as the top books, often the recommendations and how the reviews and such can be turned into slanging matches. I like joining book groups here with other people and compiling my own lists of books I have read and want to read and for that purpose I'm not sure how amazon will change how I use this site.

For people that are worried about it, which aspects are you concerned about? It it the general problem of big corporations taking over smaller companies? Or is it that we'll have our habits tracked and books suggested to buy from Amazon?

I'm not sure I understand the implications of this.....

message 168: by DENISA (new)

DENISA HOWE | 1697 comments Everyone I just rec a e-mail stating AMAZON was going to acquire godreads... has anyone else heard this? Do you think it will change anything or do away with our groups and give aways and such?

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
That's just what we're talking about Denisa. What do you think?

message 170: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 610 comments I'm loving the social aspect of this site to make too quick a decision about leaving it too soon. Lets wait and see what happens. Could b a storm in a teacup :)

message 171: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
Yep, I don't want to leave just yet.

message 172: by Alondra (new)

Alondra Miller i have read and understand a little. i shop amazon; but am not too thrilled to have big business running this site. the owners of the site state this will remain independent, but i dont think they could stop amazon even if they wanted to. once the ink is dry, i will make a decision.

library thing is not that great of a site, and shelfari sucks..(owned by amazon). i dont see how this will help and dont know where to go if amazon destroys this site. ... i just dont know. :(

message 173: by Henri (new)

Henri Moreaux (henrimoreaux) | 128 comments Pink wrote: "For people that are worried about it, which aspects are you concerned about? It it the general problem of big corporations taking over smaller companies? Or is it that we'll have our habits tracked and books suggested to buy from Amazon?"

Amazon has a bad reputation for buying companies then letting them wallow after they strip out what they wanted. Shelfari one example, it just slowly pottered along into irrelevance.

My main concerns are that my reading habits can now be data mined for sales (I like my privacy, and I have a lot of data here on GR) and that things will slowly head downhill. I don't imagine the book purchase links to other organisations will last long and I regularly use those to purchase books after reading favourable reviews from friends.

There's also the whole librarians previously volunteered to help a community and will now become unpaid workers for a mega-corporation.

DENISA HOWE | 1697 comments Jack wrote: "That's just what we're talking about Denisa. What do you think?"

I love AMAZON but I don't wantthem taking over goodreads. I like it just like it is... it has a homey feeling and I fear that when they take over it will change and have a bunch of advertisements on our pages and in our corners.... I don't want it.... Its like the old bookstores use to be and if they take over it will be like Facebook or another coporate owned site... NOT LIKING IT AT ALL

Me either but I am worried

Katherine | 610 comments Be positive. Nothing is going to change

message 177: by Henri (new)

Henri Moreaux (henrimoreaux) | 128 comments Katherine wrote: "Be positive. Nothing is going to change"

I am sure the users of Shelfari, IMDb, etc felt the same way. One was left to rot the other has turned into the wild west where forums are an unpoliced disaster zone except if you dare mention purchasing a movie anywhere but amazon in which case your comments just vanish.

message 178: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 610 comments Trying to be positive here:) so don't want to lose all of the new friends I have here

message 179: by Henri (new)

Henri Moreaux (henrimoreaux) | 128 comments Katherine wrote: "Trying to be positive here:) so don't want to lose all of the new friends I have here"

I would like to be positive however past performance usually is a reasonable indicator of future performance where underlying management style and associates factors have not changed.

I'll wait and see how things turn out, but am also hedging my bets and have imported my data over to librarything in case the option to export your data from goodreads "disappears" like the announcement of the amazon purchase has disappeared from the main site.

message 180: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 610 comments Need to work out how to export my stuff then. Have spent too long cataloging my books so far and love the fact that I now have a manageable list of them.

Well I joined up under the 1 year free membership with LT that's being offered for 'goodreads refugees' down the bottom of the comments there's a link to the page that will automatically import GR to LT provided your signed into both.

http://www.librarything.com/blogs/lib...

It'll also save the file on your computer. It contains your book details, ratings, reviews, read dates, etc.

message 182: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 610 comments Thanks for that. Will sort it tomorrow. Way way past my bed time

message 184: by Cherrelle (new)

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) Yeah, I don't think anything major is going to happen because of this Amazon thing. I am willing to be wrong, I just don't care much at the moment :)

message 185: by Katherine (new)

Katherine | 610 comments I agree. As I said earlier somewhere a storm in a teacup probably. Most of these things don't filter for down for some time any way (in other words it will probably be a few years at least), hopefully. We will all probably be tired with each other by then
