2013 Reading Challenge
How many books do you plan on reading this year? Well now you can keep track of your goal with this challenge. Just enter how many books you want to read this year and create a shelf for those books and this widget will automatically update your progress. Don't forget to update the group with your progress to though!

So sign up for the challenge widget on the groups homepage and let us know! I would appreciate suggestions and feedback as this is something new we're trying. Thanks!

Pete (petemedina) | 27 comments I'll try a dozen. I own at least fifty I haven't read, and just bought ten more from Half Price books.

I know it sounds unrealistic and a bit too optimistic but I'm trying for 100 books this year. I'm on my 9th book so I think I'm on track but...

Vigilante (bookvigilante) | 51 comments Wow! Nice goal :)

Pete (petemedina) | 27 comments That's great, and enjoy all those books. Mainly fiction?

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
I'm 12 books in with my goal of 100 books.

message 17: by Michael (new)

Michael (micky74007) I'm going to try for 25. So far, I have 7, but with my son's baseball season starting and his karate classes, my free time will be limited.

message 18: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
Wow, you're doing great Michael. Good Luck with your goal! :-)

message 19: by Peach (new)

Peach (peachst) | 68 comments I am aiming for 50 this year, and 20 of those have to come off my already existing To Be Read pile (mountain). I've finished four so far.

message 20: by Sophia (new)

Sophia | 60 comments I'm aiming for forty. I have nine done so far, so I'm starting to think that forty was a little bit too modest a goal. Though University goes back in two weeks so I won't have quite as much free time then. Still, I'm seriously considering raising the bar to fifty or sixty...

You're doing great with your goals guys. Good luck and keep us updated on your progress.

message 22: by Hailey (new)

Hailey (hailey_barrr) My goal is to read 50 books this year. So far I've read 8 books, and apparently, I'm 2 books ahead of schedule!

message 23: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
That's great Hailey! Unfortunately I'm 2 books behind my schedule of my goal of 100. I hope I catch up.

message 24: by Hailey (new)

Hailey (hailey_barrr) Thanks! I hope you catch up as well. You could try to read more pages a day? Just a suggestion...

message 25: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
Thanks Hailey. You can enter you're goal into the challenge widget at the top of the group home page to keep track of your challenge within the the group if you'd like.

message 26: by Hailey (new)

Hailey (hailey_barrr) Okay, thanks! I think I might do so.

message 27: by Hailey (new)

Hailey (hailey_barrr) Ah, phooey! I looked at which books have been recorded as part of the 2013 Reading Challenge and somewhere along the line, some books were wrongly added. So after fixing everything I'm only at 6 books which is on schedule. So yay? Hah, better be more careful huh?

message 28: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
Haha! Well, you're still doing great! Good luck with your challenge.

message 34: by Cherrelle (new)

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) I've never done one of these reading goal things before but I have wanted to for a while. I literally have no idea what I will be capable of, so I went for a nice and easy goal of 20 for this year. If I get to that fairly early on, I'll just double it or something. Good luck everyone!

I read a lot, and I honestly don't know how it's possible for people to consistently read more than 1 book per day unless they're either short books (like those 200 page mills & boone romances) OR you're not reading them properly.

I've read 78 books in the 70 odd days of this year so far which is slightly over 1 a day, but some of those have been 'short' books of ~240 pages or less such as Annie Oldham's The Burn & Infraction or Bernard Knight's Dr Richard Pryor series. Then at the other end of the spectrum I've also tackled 1,168 pages of Atlas Shrugged and multiple 600-700 page Dale Browns.

(My Average book length: 26,057 total pages read / 78 books completed = 334 pages average per book)

Here's an example of absurdity, in my country the top readers this *week* have 85 books, 40 books, 39 books, 38 books & 38 books read. In 7 days. Apparently.

No idea how you can read 10 books in a day let alone 5 a day consistently.

message 38: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (missie322) I'm going for 200 this year. I went for 150 last year and surpassed it.

message 39: by Jack, Founder (new)

Jack (jack_) | 2831 comments Mod
Good luck with your challenge Melissa. I know you'll surpass this goal too. :)

message 40: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I'm aiming for 52 (one a week.) I went way over that last year, but I'm hoping to read longer books this year rather than MORE books. So far I've read 16 books this year, so I'm still ahead of schedule.

message 41: by Karli (new)

Karli (karlig96) Hi! I'm Karli! I'm new. (I have introduced myself on the Introduce Yourself thread but just thought I'd mention all of that anyway.) I've set myself a goal of reading 100 books including at least 20 classics.

Sounds good, what classics are you planning to read? I'm currently reading Walden (in fact the 1900 edition from Walter Scott Publishing)

Walden by Henry David Thoreau

message 43: by April (new)

April (ajoys) I set a goal of reading 125 books! Last year I did set a goal of 100 and ended up reading 111. I don't skim or rush through just to make my goal. I usually read several books at a time(up to 5) this includes audio books, e books, hard and soft back.

message 44: by Cherrelle (new)

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) Welcome Karli! Good luck with your challenge!

Henri Moreaux (henrimoreaux) | 128 comments Heartling wrote: "HI'm currently quite short of my 20 book goal so any recommendations would be much appreciated ;) "

I'm about halfway through Walden and really enjoying it so I'd recommend giving that a try, or reading about it and seeing if it's something of interest to you.

Two Years Before The Mast is a good read also, but will depend on your interests - is about a student at Harvard who decides to take to the sea for two years and chronicles his experiences. Written in the 1800s it's a pretty amazing glimpse into the past. It's non-fiction like Walden.

Walden by Henry David Thoreau Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana Jr.

Fiction wise, there's Atlas Shrugged (written in 1957, arguably contemporary) which is one of the top books I've read so far this year.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

Atlas Shrugged is quite the tome, but it's definitely worth the time. Thoreau is a complicated and conflicted man that's for sure.
