Julia (juliace) Currently reading Chosen by a Horse by Susan Richards. Pretty close to the end of the book and I'm pretty sure it's going to bring me to tears. I have to say though, that I LOVE a book that makes me laugh out loud or cry.

Gary Martin (gmmartinbooks) | 27 comments I thought it was great. In fact I just did a review on it if you want to check it out.

I also just noticed that somehow I posted twice on this page. I don't know how I did that.

Julia (juliace) I have nothing to read :(
Nothing is holding my interst so far so I'm sad

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition I'm reading my old Cliff Notes from The Great Gatsby so I have something intelligent to say when the new movie comes out.

Julia (juliace) Terry - have you read The Great Gatsby before or just the cliff notes? I hate to say it, but I haven't read any classics.

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition Julia2848 wrote: "Terry - have you read The Great Gatsby before or just the cliff notes? I hate to say it, but I haven't read any classics."

It was required reading in High School, then I read it again a few years ago and I have to say it wasn't my favorite classic, I didn't really get it, but I love that time period and I like F Scott Fitzgerald's other books, so I read the Clff Notes and have a better understanding of why he wrote the book and what is was saying, but I still don't really like any of the characters in it. Can't wait for the movie, though - I love that kind of over the top production, with beautiful costumes and a good soundtrack!

BattyKat (prosserkat) I am just about smack in the middle of The Pillars of the Earth (stayed up till 2:30a getting that far! This is a big book!)

This month (officially May) I am slated for 4 books, and I think 3 are Buddy reads.
Xone of Contention
The Book Thief
Ender's Game
Vampire Academy

I'm switching over to audio on Pillars because that way I can get work done around the house and still get a book in. Or at least, part of a book! ;)

I have never tried an audio book. How do they compare in price to the average e or kindle book?

message 173: by BattyKat (last edited May 01, 2013 11:04AM) (new)

BattyKat (prosserkat) Audios can be pretty pricy, as it's a much bigger file that a digital book, as an ebook is just text.

Also, you go at the speed of the reader, not your own pace. Outlander took forever on audio. Quite a big book, too. Pillars is ~900 pages, so I imagine the audio will take some time. I like being able to work with my hands while I 'read' tho, so I like them.
Amazon has the ebook at $8. Audio is $32 for unabridged.

Thanks for all the info. I will have to give one a try. It might encourage me to do my daily walk, without procrastinating!

Julia (juliace) I just started The Pact by Jodi Picoult by Jodi Picoult. Only a couple pages in but I'm liking it so far.

Both of those books are EXCELLENT!! I get so sad thinking that there will never be another book by Steig Larsson, though.

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition The Glimpses of the Moon by Edith Wharton
The Glimpses of the Moon by Edith Wharton.
I think she is the Jane Austen of the 1920's.
So witty and spot on about personalities. You feel as if you are sitting right there at someone's dinner party.

Terry ~ Huntress of Erudition So excited! I got picked to read an advance copy of "The Next Time You See Me" by Holly Goddard Jones The Next Time You See Me by Holly Goddard Jones
and write a review on it. The author of Gone Girl calls it "Mesmerizing". It just came in the mail today. I'll start it tonight. From the book cover, it looks like a mystery about a missing person in a small town where everyone knows everyone else's business(except of course where the missing woman is).

Just finished reading the 1987 horror novel Somebody Come And Play by Clare McNally Somebody Come And Play and posted my review.

message 183: by Bec (new)

Bec (foreverfnm) R, I think Susanna Clarke is one of the best fantasy writers out today. In my limited, don't read fantasy opinion! :)

I'm currently in a bit of a situation cause I'm reading A Drink Before the War (ebook), Crossfire (audiobook) and Boulevard (dead tree book). I usually read one book at a time and the only times I read two is when I'm reading a fiction and a nonfiction. So three fiction is unusual, and I'm very confused! Haha. Gonna have to focus on one and come back to the others, I think!

message 184: by Gary (new)

Gary Martin (gmmartinbooks) | 27 comments I am reading John Grisham's THE PARTNER. So far I'm divided on what I think of the book. It's a decent read, but has some slow spots.
I started this book because I've read John Grisham before and haven't been disappointed. Another reason is because this book is relatively short and between my full time job and my non-profit venture (writing) I haven't had a lot of time lately.

message 185: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliace) Right now I'm reading The Scent of Shadows (Signs of the Zodiac, #1) by Vicki Pettersson by Vicki Pettersson. I'm on the fence about this. It's urban-fantasy about a woman who comes into her 'superpowers' on her 25th Bday. I'm only about 1/4 through.

But, I've always wondered, does that count as reading when you listen to an audiobook?

This was a "First Reads" book sent to me and I was pleasantly surprised by the caliber of writing - I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who appreciates an intelligently written book.
"The Next Time You See Me" starts out as a kind of murder mystery, but it is really about the people in a small town and their interactions.
Excellent character development!! I love to really get to know the characters, their backgrounds and their incentives to act in a certain way. Holly Goddard Jones writes in such a compelling way that I found myself thinking about each character and the storyline during the day at work. I could hardly wait to start reading again at the end of the day, during my commute home. This author can make even subjects you may have little knowledge or interest into a fascinating study. It's not so much what happens, it's the how and why that makes this book a good read!

It had better count! I don't see why it wouldn't count, as you are still ingesting the story.

BattyKat (prosserkat) Right now, I am most of the way thru The Book Thief, just a little ways into 1984, and am not as into Xone of Contention as I was hoping I'd be.

Have also tentatively started Physics of the Future: How Science Will Shape Human Destiny and Our Daily Lives by the Year 2100 for the non-fiction challenge.
