message 1: by Alisa (new)

Alisa Lately I have the attention span of a crow in a jewelry store. I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm just all over the place. I'm wondering if maybe it's time to make a reading plan so I can complete my challenges, ARC's etc. Do you use a plan & if so does it work?

message 2: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments No I hate reading plans they never work at least not for me. If you notice I am forever posting I will read this book then I choose something else. When it comes to ARC's I just make sure I read one a week and I try not to have them all the time.

Anyway reading for pleasure is just that pleasure. I read according to my mood which changes like the wind lol. Sometimes I just want to read my magazine articles and other times I want to read something spiritual and so on.

While I would love a job in publishing I believe having to read stuff I do not care about would be a terrible bore.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 823 comments Yes, I have a reading plan each month - based on my challenges - from which I deviate often. **hee hee** I would say about 3 months out of the year I really stick with them.

message 4: by Gin (new)

Gin | 338 comments I have a very general plan. I list a lot of books that I might potentially read, so that I have a list in front of me to look at for when I'm trying to decide what I'm in the mood for.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Not so much. I usually have a rough list of books I'm supposed to read in a month. Doesn't always work out. I probably stress about it too much and forget that as Dawn says, reading is for pleasure.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I don't have a reading plan. I do get most of my books from the library, so that forced me to some sort of reading order. I do read on my e-reader at work and have a list of books that I want to read from that. I pick one, but they aren't ever in any sort of order. The audio books I listen to are a mix of audible and library downloadable books. The library books get listened to first, audible books are mostly re-reads or new releases.

message 7: by Leigh (new)

Leigh | 1219 comments I started a thread with my reading goal for the year. I keep track of all my challenges. I am doing a listing for each month including what books I need to read that month. It is making it easier to keep track of everything.

message 8: by Emy (new)

Emy (emypt) | 59 comments I have vague reading plans based around my extended TBR list and then challenges... Other than that, nah, just what I fancy when I finish the book I've been reading.

message 9: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) I didn't used to have reading plans, but Gin MADE me do one this month. And if I didn't want to read all those awesome books I would deviate a lot from it just to prove my point.

Sadly, I have a lot of good books there, so I'll probably try to stick to it.

*frowns at Gin*

message 10: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 58 comments Not really. I try to read based on my challenges. But if I'm not feeling in the mood to read one of my challenge books then I don't, with the exception of timed team challenges.

I read mainly by mood and that's why I try to avoid any challenges that are too restrictive or require me to list my books in advance.

Sometimes library do dates and RL book club meetings dictate what I read to a certain extent.

message 11: by Alisa (new)

Alisa I don't want to stick to something so rigidly that it makes reading not fun but I need to get better organized. My TBR list is so long that I created a TBR 911 list for the books that I wanted to focus on. Somehow that list is now over 30 books long.

message 12: by ladymurmur (new)

ladymurmur | 146 comments No formal plan. I do have a general idea of the pool from which I will read next, though, between what I have from the library, and what I'm in the mood for from my own backlog.

Most of this past month (Jan) has been unusual for me in that I was focusing on a couple of month-long challenges. Now I'm indulging in the rest of a series that I discovered thanks to one of the challenges (the next 5 were all immediately available from the library - score!), a few long awaited holds that finally came in at the library, and a few titles from my personal backlog that I've flagged as it being time to read...

And some new release or new recommendation will pop up soon, and I'll dig into that. Reading is my favorite vice and constant pleasure. If a plan will contribute to my enjoyment, yay - but if it would only detract, it isn't going to happen.

Jacy (jazabell) | 214 comments I think that's my problem with reading plans, they make me feel like I have to read this or that and it takes the joy out of the process. I'm a mood reader and structured reading feels to forced so I stay away from it. I also try to limit they number of challenge and book club readings so that I don't get bogged down and feel like I have to read this or that even when I'm just not into it. I know some people who use plans and love them and others that don't. I think it all depends on how you like to read.

message 14: by Nairabell (new)

Nairabell | 87 comments This year I'm trying out having a plan of books I want to read in each month. I'm picking them around the end of the month, but making sure it's a few books less than I think I'll read. So far it's working out - I read all my January books by last week and now I'm just reading whatever I like. Plus I knew what books but could pick the order to suit myself which I liked.

The main reason for bothering at all is to try and help out with challenges, but also to make sure I'm not sticking with just one type of book. I burnt out a few times last year from being on genre kicks so I'm trying to avoid that and read some neglected genres.

Sure blame it all on me!!

My list is the exact opposite of that. It's a lot more books than I could ever possibly get through in a month, but allows me a shorter list to look at than my tbr shelf.

message 17: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I have a general plan of buddy/group reads and other options but I end up deviating quite often when something grabs my attention.

message 18: by Karena (new)

Karena (karenafagan) I sort of have a reading plan. My goal is 200 books this year and I wanted to read smarter. Monthly I read my book for the other book group Classics Without All the Class that I run and then whatever the book challenge is for this group like the Literature Map one this month, as well as the author challenges and character challenges from this group then I have about six ongoing reading challenges (e.g. 1001 books to read before you die, the Rory Gilmore challenge) and then I fill in with books that interest me or my series books that come out.

message 19: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (kwisbear) | 29 comments I'm a uber dork and have book journals. The ones I buy have a tbr part. So u usually follow the books I hit down in there.
