Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Snow is more than a nuisance. It can be dangerous in many ways.

message 2202: by Nina (last edited Feb 12, 2018 10:03AM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, you are right. it can be dangerous but usually here not as dangerous as ice on top of it. Hope all of you stay safe and your snow is melting soon. At least next month we welcome Spring. Although as I said we've had very little snow we've had lots of very cold temps this winter and our busted frozen pipe inside our walls was no fun but we've had heat and that indeed is a blessing.

message 2203: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Temp here is 37.2 F. Good melting weather for ice and snow.

message 2204: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got about an inch last night & it was a mess driving in. Almost no snow here in Louisville, but it turned into ice after I got here. Lots of accidents today.

message 2205: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments That's too bad. Glad you're OK.

message 2206: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes ice is treacherous. Hope you aren't driving in it tomorrow.

message 2207: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It got up to 40 today, so all the ice & snow is gone, roads are dry. Wicked weird weather!

message 2208: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Tomorrow is supposed to reach fifty after a very cold night.

message 2209: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Only 9 degrees at 751am on this Tuesday morning. Sun is shining brightly. :) No snow in forecast.

There are icicles all around the roof edge. Luckily our snow plower also shovels snow and ice off of roof. We do have a snow shovel but with all the snow and icy rain we've had - won't do the trick. Need to prevent leakage into the house. He'll come by in a few days and handle. Also heavily sanded our icy driveway.

Jim, I'm glad all your snow and ice is gone and roads are clear. Main roads are clear. Our street has some snow on the ground.

Been many many a year since we've had such a large accumulation of snow. When it did occur, the snow was on the side of our house - until June!!

message 2210: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, it's been a very hard year for weather here, with the snow, ice and cold temps. I am really looking forward to spring.

message 2211: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Amen to that, Joy!

This morning, no new snow on ground. A good start for the day.

message 2212: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're going to drown in a quagmire. It's raining now again. Then it will freeze, then rain some more. No drying time. We've got to move hay around & it looks like Sunday is the only day to do it. It's going to be a nightmare, though. It will tear up the fields, too.

message 2213: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Sounds terrible, Jim. Hope it won't be as bad as you predict.

message 2214: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I shouldn't mention that tomorrow will be sixty five/ then cold on Friday. It is an up and down winter here as far as temps go and seems strange that we have no snow. I can't remember a winter like this one. I remember ones when my husband had to retrieve our kids cars from snowbanks.

message 2215: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, it does sound like a nightmare. Hope it ends soon and you get our warmer weather with no snow.

message 2216: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Today our temps were in the lower 40s F. Above freezing! YAY!

message 2217: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Glad you're making it above the freezing mark, Joy. We almost hit 60 today & it's supposed to stay pretty warm for the next 10 days. There are some nights going below freezing over the weekend, Sunday is supposed to be clear.

The forsythia are getting pretty big buds. I think the next couple of weeks might let them bloom, although that would be very early. Usually they bloom about the same time the Purple Martins get here, end of March, early April.

message 2218: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Still our crazy winter weather/tomorrow is expected to be 70 degrees and Friday can you believe thirty one?

message 2219: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I wish I could send you all my tomorrow's seventy degree weather. Might set a record.

message 2220: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, the yellow forsythia bushes have always been one of our first signs of spring. We won't see them for a while.

message 2221: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina wrote: "Still our crazy winter weather/tomorrow is expected to be 70 degrees and Friday can you believe thirty one?"

Oy! That's what we're going through, too. Bouncing all over & never drying up here.

message 2222: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments This morning our streets are sweating. The weatherman says this is due to Moist Air from the Gulf of Mexico coming our way. I had never heard of streets sweating in February but they did.

message 2223: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina wrote: "This morning our streets are sweating. The weatherman says this is due to Moist Air from the Gulf of Mexico coming our way. ...."

Interesting.

message 2224: by Linda (new)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Thought we were free and clear of snow for a few days. Just heard the latest weather report. Saturday night snow. Oh dear.

Then, for next week we will be experiencing warmer temps close to 50.

message 2225: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 16, 2018 07:27AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Oh, no. Hope it won't be much snow.

message 2226: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's looking like we got 6" of rain so far this week. 60 yesterday & this morning, now down to 40, possible snow Sunday morning. Ugh.

message 2227: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Fifty five degrees difference between yesterday and today. Our blood doesn't know whether to be thick or thin.

message 2228: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) You're right, Nina. Up & down & all around. I typed wrong - it was almost 70 when I got home last night. Marg had the windows open! This morning it was 60 & now it is 40.

message 2229: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Current temp here is 42.3 F.

message 2230: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I know for you snowbirds this sounds like heaven; 126 days with no snow or rain. NOT. New sod my husband put in back in the fall is dead and we don't know about the other drought damage so far. I hope your snow leaves soon and wish it could come here.

message 2231: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Feb 17, 2018 12:42AM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina wrote: ".... New sod my husband put in back in the fall is dead and we don't know about the other drought damage so far..."

That's a shame, Nina.

message 2232: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's rough, Nina. Droughts are awful.

message 2233: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It got down to about 30 last night, crept just above freezing (34) & we got an inch of snow. It's now 36, so it's melting, but still made a mess of things.

message 2234: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We expect snow tonight. "Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible."

Nina | 6069 comments How much snow so far this winter?

message 2236: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina wrote: "How much snow so far this winter?"

I really haven't kept track, Nina, but it seems to be much more than normal.

message 2237: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Today; ice covered streets, schools closed, eight accidents on Freeways so far. I had to hold onto bushes to get across our drive in order to get to the bird feeders today. One poor little sparrow is the only bird at the feeder so far. We are staying put. Glad we did our shopping yesterday; Barnes and Noble for a book for a great granddaughter, grocery stores and post office drop and more suet at the hardware store. I don;t remember any snow days of school being cancelled when I was a child.

message 2238: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wow, bad day for you, Nina. Hope things will improve.

message 2239: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Yuck. I hate ice storms. We're above 70 today, windy which is drying things up. Temps are supposed to drop tonight & dump more rain on us, but I don't think it's supposed to freeze.

message 2240: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Our current temp is 53.4 F. Hope it will melt more snow.

message 2241: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Still wet outside; temps in the thirties but in the teens tonight so not much hope of melting. Good we did errands yesterday as there was no rain or freezing drizzle and temps in the fifties. I hope your warmer weather continues in KY and NY.

message 2242: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Had a fun ride on Chip today. We got up close to 80 & the ground wasn't too soupy. We managed to go around the woods & the Fat Man decided to gallop up the long hill. Lots of wind so he was trying to find excuses to spook. I had to tap Tango on the nose to back him off twice, but otherwise the other horses left us alone.

Lily pointed out a garter snake way up in some dead weeds on the edge of the pond. I was surprised to see it so far up in them.

message 2243: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I'm envious but glad for you, Jim as another ice storm is headed our way on Thursday. Will it ever end?

message 2244: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Improving as we are only expecting rain; not freezing.

message 2245: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got 2.5" of rain yesterday, 1" today, & the temp went back up to the mid 60s. It was a warm rain & suddenly things are popping. I've been seeing the daffodils & Naked Ladies coming up, but suddenly the crocuses bloomed today. Yay!

message 2246: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sounds like spring has sprung a month early. Lucky you.

message 2247: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We'll see, Nina. Right now the place is all soupy mud. We got another inch of rain last night. Ugh. Yesterday the fields & lawn were soup. Can't imagine what they'll be like today.

This is really hard on my driveway, too. It's 6" of gravel over clay, but that damn school bus is so heavy that it pumps the clay up through the gravel. Watching Marg drive around the circle, I can actually see the ground sink & spring up around the wheels. I've had to dig it out in one place & put more gravel down. I really should have put sediment cloth over the entire thing, but it's pretty hard to do piece meal.

Next year might be the last year I'll have to put up with it. Marg is talking about retiring since she's in her mid 60s & getting pretty tired of the circus. The administration, parents, & kids seem to get worse every year - in that order.

My daughter is thinking about changing careers after finally getting a job as a teacher. She loves the subject & the kids, but the administration side is just too stressful.

message 2248: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I understand some of your problems as m y daughter with the four acres has a very very long gravel drive and has a terrible time with it snows or rains heavily. When our grandson visits with his semi at their place at Thanksgiving it can cause problems but not as bad as yours. Also, I understand the teacher problems too as one daughter works for school administration and one son in law teaches in high
school and my daughter and other son in law are retired after twenty and thirty years of teaching. They both said they wouldn't do it now.

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Today is Tuesday and it was a beautiful day. Actually went into the basement to get unused kitchen items (dishes, silverware, some kitchen gadgets) to bring to the Salvation Army. Also went through some winter clothing and bedding to take to the North Country ministries. Went to the dump and deposited our garbage. House seems a lot lighter! Ha!

High of 52 here - its lovely.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'm really looking forward to spring.
