Jim (jimmaclachlan) We've been colder than normal. It's been below freezing every night, although not far below. Often just upper 20s or low 30s, enough for some nasty ice skims. I almost fell down the front porch steps yesterday morning. We got about an inch of snow a few days ago, but it didn't hang around. Last year we had a foot of snow at this time. It didn't hang around long either, though. It's generally been pretty chilly & raw.

We're supposed to get warmer this week. It's 28 out now, but that should be the last time under freezing this week & we're supposed to get into the upper 40s today. Each day is supposed to be a bit warmer until we're in the 70's on Wednesday, but then it's supposed to start raining for the next 3 or 4 days.

Are we talking about summer so soon? :)

Nina | 6069 comments I hope not Joy but just wondering if it is spring the first of March is summer far behind?

Nina, you are an optimist! :)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We have 45mph winds this afternoon with gusts up to 75. Figures. The dogs & I took the small chainsaw & walked all around cleaning up branches from the previous storms this morning. We had a good time. A fox squirrel missed a leap between tree branches & Lily got it. Pip had a grand time carrying it around & chewed on it for a while. He didn't eat it, though. Munchkin & Pixie used to eat them. None of our current dogs do, so I tossed it over the fence for other critters. We were in the woods, so I doubt the buzzards will find it, but I bet it's gone by tomorrow.

Cruel, cruel world!

message 1957: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Yes, sometimes nature is cruel and sometimes crazy. Last Sunday it snowed here and tomorrow they are predicting eighty degrees for the ballgame(our national champions) first game of the season. One thing it seems no one talks much about the election here as the weather is far more interesting.

message 1958: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, to tell you the truth, I'm getting tired of hearing about the election. It's gone on too long. I'll be glad when it's over.

message 1959: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Me too. Enough already! I can barely look at their faces much less listen to them talk.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments This may be a frivolous thought, but, as I watch the candidates on TV, it occurs to me that the men have it so much easier. They can wear nondescript suits which are easy to choose and fit into, but the women must worry about their outfits which (whether we like it or not) must fit well and can't help but make a fashion statement.

Hope that made sense. :)

BTW, have you ever seen Hillary in the same outfit twice? She must have hundreds of outfits! I keep thinking of the wardrobe assistants she must have. They have to be ready with nice outfits which make a good presentation. Surely Hillary has no time to choose outfits. She probably has a good dressmaker who makes custom clothes to fit and flatter. Those clothes she wears are surely not off the rack! Clothes have to fit properly and they don't fit well on the female form unless custom-fitted.

Men on the other hand, can hide their big tummies under their wide nondescript jackets! Oh! If women could only get away with wearing suits like the men do!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The wind did a bit of damage. One tree down on the west fence line. It wasn't a big deal since it was a dead ash, one of many I've been expecting to come down. It was almost 2' in diameter, but easy to get rid of. I cut it once & then used the front end loader to put it into a brush pile. It had no branches &, while it landed on the fence, I'd pulled the staples along that stretch. I have the fence held up with a couple of pieces of wire on each post, so it just gets pushed down. It only took 15 minutes to pull it back up & get it squared away.

It took a lot longer to fix the big door on the north end of the big barn. One board was blown off & all the others were loosened, so I put screws into them all. Oddly, I hadn't noticed it when I was in there getting the tractor. I didn't see it until I was mowing along the road. Well, the lawn doesn't need mowing too much yet, anyway.

Wow, Jim, that must have been quite a wind storm!

The numbers don't have as much impact as: "One board was blown off"! :)

Nina | 6069 comments Isn't it strange that it was snowing last Sunday and today it hit 80 degrees?

Very true, Nina, especially if they keep it short.

Nina | 6069 comments Through with the Cat Scan so will wait to find out what they found out. One down as the old saying goes. Glad I got some pansies planted before the next round of tests. It will be a nice relief if they can find something to do to stop the pain. We are lucky they have advances in medicine.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina wrote: "I seem to be into trilogies as of late in my reading/latest one is "The Glassblowers."

The Glassblower (Glasbläser-Saga #1)
The American Lady (Glasbläser-Saga #2)
The Paradise of Glass (Glasbläser-Saga #3)

All by Petra Durst-Benning

Nina, I hadn't heard of this trilogy. I just can't keep up with it all.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments PS-I read the sample of _The Glassblower_ (Glasbläser-Saga #1) at Google Play:
https://play.google.com/books/reader?...
It reads easily but has time shifts which I'm not a fan of.

I listened to the audio sample at: http://www.audible.com/pd/Fiction/The...
Seems to have jumped ahead. The name of the character mentioned is different from the ones at the Google Play sample.

Will this book have numerous characters to keep track of?

message 1974: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, the "Glassblowers" book that I am reading was written by Petra Durat Benning. i don't recall any drastic time shifts/perhaps a few weeks and maybe several months on occasion but not many and not too many characters as some stories have in them. The main focus is on three sisters and their friends and bosses and a husband. But not hard to keep track of in any case. It is interesting to me aside from the story is the way glassblowing is described and not on and on description. It is hard for me to say if you would like the book but I find it entertaining and keeps my interest in what happens next.

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, They let me take pain pills and that I did as it is quite painful for me to lay flat on a hard table for 45 minutes and they did help alleviate it to some extent. I hear about so many people with such worse problems I hate to complain.

Nina, I got the impression that there definitely were time and place shifts in _The Glassblower_. It seems to tell the story of generations. One of the characters seems to inherit the genes for glassblowing from her ancestor whom we see die in the beginning. Her husband leaves her and she moves to Italy. Just as I got comfortable with one set of characters, another set was introduced.

The book is filled with long Italian words describing places and things in Italy. A little of that goes a long way.

The reading is easy and flows along but I don't like the time and place and character shifts. But I suppose that's what makes a story.

Hope your pain will be alleviated soon.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I wonder if the recent storms around KY have affected Jim. Hope he and his family are OK... and the dogs and the horses and goats too!

Nina | 6069 comments Lots of thunderstorms here but fortunately no tornadoes as in OK. I assume Jim is OK or we would have heard otherwise..Is that wishful thinking?

message 1979: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) No damage from the storms, but I couldn't finish weeding the south bank garden yesterday. I spent 2.5 hours on it Monday & almost 3 hours on it tonight to finish it up. It's over 80, humid, & sunny. Ugh. Tough going, but I can start to mow tomorrow. The fields will probably still be too wet, but I can get the lawn done.

I do have to move a couple of things in the north house garden. Joe is coming to replace my old A/C unit with a new heat pump on Saturday. It will be about a foot bigger all the way around, so a hosta & a few other things need to move a bit. They're getting crowded anyway. Of course, that means I'll wind up weeding that garden, too.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Too much work, Jim! I'm tired just reading about it. LOL
Glad you're all OK.
Enjoy your new A/C unit.

message 1981: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It is a lot of work, but this is the third year for it & it's coming along nicely. The grass & weeds are starting to lose to the flowers I've planted. A lot of Japanese iris, cone flowers, & other perennials. I also planted a couple of dozen annuals - mostly coxcomb & marigolds - plus a few osteospermum. Then I topped it off with some seeds for other annuals. I had a few of those come back this year, but last year was a bad one for annuals. We had a good wet spring up until the middle of April & then it was dry until the middle of June, so it killed all the little plants. We'll see what happens from here on.

message 1982: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, it must be disappointing to lose those flowers. Hope the season improves for you. As I shop, I see all the beautiful flowering plants that I could be buying but I just don't have the energy to fuss with them. As I look at my old pictures of all the flowers I used to grow (in pots), I long to do it again, but I'm getting too lazy. :)

Nina | 6069 comments Lots of thunderstorms. My new lavender plant says "Don't give me another drink."

message 1984: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I never had a lavender plant. Do they give off a strong lavender scent?

message 1985: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments If you rub the leaves the scent comes off. I actually love the smell of lavendar as it reminds me of the fields of it in France/hillsides of purple.

message 1986: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, because you were reading the book about Richard Burton I thought this tidbit might interest you. Last night we were watching the movie, "Where Eagles Dare," and I was reminded that once I was with a tour guide who took us to view the castle high in the Alps called Eagle's Nest. He said that is where the movie was filmed and he had been the interpreter for the cast. After the movie was ended Richard Burton asked the cast members and crew to Elizabeth Taylor's birthday party as she was then married to him and had been staying at this town while the movie was being filmed. Our tour guide told us that he called his wife and told her about the invitation to the party. She refused to go as she said she didn't have a nice enough dress to wear. When Elizabeth heard this she told the man to go buy her a dress in town and charge it to her. The woman was thrilled and did attend the party.

That was very nice of Elizabeth, Nina. As I read the bios of Hollywood celebrities, I get the impression that they had a lot of parties! LOL

Nina | 6069 comments I think it's nice to hear something good about a celebrity whoever they are. Usually, not the case. I am anxious to read about Cary Grant from his wife's point of view.

Can you beat that?!

I am looking forward to non-watering flowers every day. When? Tomorrow will be a hot and sad day as I am visiting my friend in Hospice. She was at my birthday party six weeks ago and thought she had a problem with her knee but otherwise she looked fine and was about doing her regular things when she went to have her knee x-ray they found ovarian cancer and she is not expected to live. Scarey.

message 1997: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks everyone for your concern. Went to visit my friend but she was under sedation so didn't get to visit with her but I squeezed her hand and left a note I was there. Otherwise got up at six/ten and made a peach upside down cake/watering flowers on side of house and back garden/took a walk and then showered and did laundry all before nine o'clock. Was ready after the visit to sit at the oldest grocery/deli in the same family(LIrish) in North America and had a half of a delicious corned beef sandwich. Busy day.
