Nina | 6069 comments Temperature on Nov. 19th is 55 degrees and it is sunny with a light wind and roses are still blooming in our city and in my yard; as are impatients and begonias and purple petunias. Unusuall fall weather. Not as luch blooming as summer but still a bit nice leading up to Thanksgiving We are having an OPEN HOUSE to celebrate our 62nd Wedding Anniversary the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Wish us good luck. nina

Sixty-two years married! That's great, Nina! I wish you the best of luck. What is your secret? Any advice? :)

We'll be celebrating our 50th in February, God-willing. My advice is: Marry the right partner. :)

message 153: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments As far as attaining a long marriage I think it comes down to three things; balance, a bit of luck and faith. If you balance the good times against the bad times and with a little luck the good comes out on top and have faith that's the way it going to come out, hang in there and you end up with a good end result. nothing startling in that advice just let the days pile up and usually you will win the prize; a long satisfying marriage. nina

So true, Nina.
One of the best quotes I've ever seen on this matter is the following:

"We are told that people stay in love because of chemistry, or because they remain intrigued with each other, because of many kindnesses, because of luck . . . But part of it has got to be forgiveness and gratefulness." -Ellen Goodman

Nina | 6069 comments That is a very good Ellen G. quote and I wholeheartedly agree with her. It works both ways for each partner. nina

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments It seems that the warm weather is over for us. I was just pleased we got it this far. Not looking forward to the dreariness of winter.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Last night the temp here in Glens Falls went down to around 17F.
Current temp is 20 degrees at 9:20 AM, 12/11/09.

message 158: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was 21 last night when I went to bed. Yesterday only got up to 24. Seems a bit warmer today. It's supposed to be & the sun is out, no wind.

message 159: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I thought KY was a warm state. :) Tonight they predict that Glens Falls will go down to 11 degrees. I always worry that the water pipes will freeze in a couple of vulnerable areas. When the temps get very low we leave the cabinet doors under the kitchen sink open so it doesn't get too cold down there.

message 160: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Yes, it was VERY cold last night! I finally had to put down the storm windows and forget about the screens, it was entirely too cold to leave the windows open during the night for some fresh air.
But it's not bad, usually I'd have done this much earlier, so I can't complain!

I have found a good way to block the cold air from coming in at the bottom of the outside doors. I roll up old bathroom scatter rugs and lay them across the bottom of the doors. They're thick and fluffy and they cover a larger area than the store-bought blockers which are usually filled with sand or some other filler. I use my store-bought blockers to hold the rugs in place or to add to the bulk.

message 162: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments That's a good idea.

message 163: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have 3°F (-16°C) here in Glens Falls, NY at 6:27 AM.
Freezing rain and sleet expected tonight. :-(

message 164: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Joy, I guess there'll be no reprieve this time! Winter is truly here!
That's the only weather condition I do not like, it's so dangerous. And what's worse, is when we get the icy conditions, they don't plow (except for the main road) and we're stuck with ice on the streets until April. That would be the time when I'd have those plows out in full force!
I'll take the snow or the rain, but not the mix.

message 165: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, Jackie, the danger is the worst part of this kind of weather. It's times like this that I wish I lived in The South!

message 166: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments It started earlier than anticipated, and when we left the theater at 3:30, it was wet and starting in on the freezing rain.
I came home to a huge surprise, Eric and his friend were shovelling the driveway! But the real reason is he locked himself out so he figured he'd be useful. It was still a nice surprise.

message 167: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Glad to hear you made it safely to the theater and back, Jackie. I was wondering how you made out. That was thoughtful of Eric to shovel the driveway.

message 168: by [deleted user] (new)

We've had several rainy and cold days, well cold for S.E. Louisiana...in the 40's[F:]. It's warming up some today and tomorrow though, thankfully, a high of 75F on Monday.

message 169: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Pontalba, an outdoor temp of 75 degrees sounds heavenly at this point. Enjoy it. (40 ain't so bad either. At least it would melt our snow.) :)

message 170: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments The temp is -4°F here in Glens Falls, NY at 7:00 AM., Friday, 12/18/09. That's MINUS Four. Even the dog doesn't want to go outside. Now THAT's cold!

message 171: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Brrr! We were right at 32 at my house this morning. It's warming up!

message 172: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

message 175: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Eric's driving home from Messina up North, I called and warned him to get home before this weather starts. Very stressful knowing your kid is driving in it, I can't wait til he walks in the door. And he'll probably go right back out.

message 176: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Eddie mentioned that the storm will be more south of us. Hope he's right and Eric won't run into any bad weather.

message 177: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Me too. We've got snow here right now.

message 178: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's coming down here too!

message 179: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Eric just came home. Now, let's see if he stays put.

message 180: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks for letting us know, Jackie. Glad Eric's OK.

message 181: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Is there wind where you are? It's howling here!
Weather forecast said: "Windy, with a south wind between 16 and 26 mph, with gusts as high as 46 mph."
I believe it!

message 182: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments No wind here at all, just pouring rain, treacherous icy conditions.

message 183: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Forecast: Friday, 1/29/10, Glens Falls, NY:
Tonight: Mostly clear. Colder with lows around 8 below. A-a-argh! The heating bills!

message 184: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments It's been cold all day!

message 185: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 29, 2010 02:56PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Right now it's 7 degrees F here at 5:53 PM, Friday, 1/29/10.

At least we don't have last night's wind which made the wind chill temp well below zero... dangerous to be out in for any length of time.

message 186: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's 19 here & getting colder. Some snow expected, but we're north of the heavy accumulations, I hope. They're guessing 1" to 3 or 4". South of us they could get most of a foot. At least it's not freezing rain like it was this time last year. We were without power for 6 days!

message 187: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Freezing rain is the worst!

message 188: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) At 5:30 am, Saturday, it's 15 degrees with an inch of really light snow blowing all over the place into drifts. Fairly heavy winds & it's supposed to keep snowing until noon & get colder. Yuck!

message 189: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Bundle up, Jim!
It was -4.5 degrees here at 6:00 AM. (Sat. 1/30/10)
I was afraid to let the dog out.

message 190: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Totten (katherine42) | 199 comments 8 below zero here in Saratoga Springs, NY, but at least we don't have that harsh flag-pole-breaking wind to worry about right now.
Jim, saw some deatils about your ice storm on TV. Be safe.

message 191: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I have no reason to go out except a quick trip to the shop! We got another 2 or 3" of snow, but it's pretty much quit now, thankfully.

Katherine, I didn't hear about the flag pole. Wow!

message 193: by Werner (new)

Werner We've gotten hit by the predicted cold front and heavy snow here, too; it started last night, so we woke up to a snow-covered world, and it's still coming down heavily. The last time I looked, it was 18 degrees outside, so I expect the snow will lay for awhile. The college library is closed because of the weather (which doesn't affect me; I wasn't scheduled to work anyway), and it's been reported that 45,000 people are without electricity! Thankfully, our current is still on.

Oh my goodness, Werner. Even VA has been hit by the bad weather. Hope those folks get their power back soon. Good thing you don't have to go to work today.

message 195: by Werner (new)

Werner Well, the figure of 45,000 people is apparently for the whole U.S., not just for Virginia. But yes, our prayers and sympathy go out to them; this is terrible weather in which to be without electricity!

message 196: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Looks like we're in for more snow here in Glens Falls, NY. They're predicting up to 8 or 9 inches today. I see the flakes coming down now! Reading weather. :)

message 197: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It's sleet here right now. Yuck. So far it's melting. I am ready for Spring. NOW!!!

message 198: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Me too!

message 199: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Too much snow here in Glens Falls. It just keeps coming down. It's a very wet snow. I hope it doesn't damage the trees or cause outages. That's always a worry with this type of weather.

Had to carry our little Maltese, Romeo, out to a clearing under the trees this morning. The snow is too deep for him. It's no fun donning boots and snow pants at 6 o'clock in the morning. :-(

message 200: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments We were flickering all night. As long as it's not a full outage, I'll be happy.

It's going to be a 'B' clearing this heavy wet snow away. Well, that's Anthony's job...
