Pontalba, I enjoy comparing weather with different members here. You make me want to come to Louisianna. Too bad you're over a thousand miles away! One of our neighbors, who has a summer home here at Lake George, comes from Louisianna. They have relatives in this area who rent out lakefront cottages near us. You should come visit us... in the summer. LOL
Here in S.A. its 23deg.cent. We're supposed to be into summer which is normally very hot, so ja, its a little on the fresh side, overcast and awfully windy. (Our windy months should be in August!!) Guess the weather patterns are changing globally.

Hi Bev. It's great to be talking to someone from South Africa! Wow!
My temp. converter tell me that 23C translates to 73.4F. That's a nice comfortable temperature.
Glens Falls reports 28°F (-2°C) at about 7:00 AM.
It's a bit warmer by the lake. Our thermometer reads 38F (3.3C) at around 8:00 AM. The lake has a moderating effect.
BTW, for those who might be interested, on the following web page is a Temp Converter: ====>

Absolutely Joy... it is a comfortable temp. Forgive me for sounding disgruntled; SA folks are never satisfied unless the sun is blazing and we're sweltering!!!

Bev, I love the warmer weather too. The crisp fall weather is invigorating at times, but it means that winter is coming. So that's a downer. It's a good thing I enjoy Christmas! :)

Excuse my ignorance Joy... does it snow your neck of the woods... there is nothing like a "white" xmas though. My best Xmas ever was in Switzerland a number of years ago and to me... thats Xmas! Here as you know its extremely hot in December so more often than not we have our Xmas dinner (turkey) in the evening (24th)and spend Xmas day at the beach or alongside the pool... braai-vleising for lunch - as we call it.

Bev - what does braai-vleising mean?
To answer your question, YES, we have plenty of snow here! See pic of our yard below.

I agree that snow is welcome at Christmastime.
Your Christmas in Switzerland sounds divine!

Too beautiful for words... WOW. Sorry Joy, its an Afrikaans word for barbeque.. direct translation barbeque-meat...here we're inclinded to mix the two languages... as you probably know Afrikaans and English(most commonly used languages)are two of our 11 official languages!! In our school curriculum three language subjects are compulsory... english, afrikaans and any 1 of the other 9 languages.

Wasn't expecting these cool temps until mid-November.

Bev, thanks for explaining. I can't imagine having eleven official languages. The United States has no official language, but the statistics for the U.S. are: English 82%, Spanish 11% (2000)

Bev, thanks for bringing up this interesting subject. I take English for granted in our section of the U.S. and hardly ever think about the diversity of languages.
Canada's official languages are English and French. Our son moved to Canada and is now fluent in both languages. Sometimes I can't believe that it's my son I'm hearing when he talks to friends on the phone in French.
Bev, in how many languages are you fluent?

Last night, they decided we're going to have rain Wed - Sat. Aaargh!

Neither was I, Linda. Right now here at the lake, the temp is 44F (6.67C) degrees at 11:20 AM. The frost hasn't hit our flowers yet.

Jim, yes, this bad weather is a real downer. I have to keep remembering the song from "Annie": "Tomorrow" aka "The Sun'll Come Out Tomorrow". o/~

Thanks for those links Joy, I will most certainly take a peek. Oh and French is such a beautiful language... regret never taking it up in school. i speak only three of the eleven... english, afrikaans and zulu. I also speak "phanagalore" (don't think I spelt that correctly.. will check it out) anyhow, its a combination of (probably) no less than the 11 official languages, but is understood by all.In my day (awful aparteid era)our curriculum consisted of compulsory Afrikaans as second language and then as an additional... Latin or French... I took latin. I learnt zulu when I lived in Durban, Natal (the language mainly spoken by our African people in that area)...Needless to say that has all changed, now a choice of one of the nine african languages is compulsory. Talk about diversity of languages... lets not get onto the subject of "traditions"!!!!

Bev, I suppose you mean cultural traditions. It must be hard to keep track of so much diversity.

At 7:15am its only 29 degrees. What happened to Fall?
Not quite ready for Winter...its 2 months early!

Snow in October? What happened to Global Warming? :) Temp here at LG is 44 degrees at 11:40 AM. I took in some geranium plants. Can't bear to see them freeze.

I hate that raw feeling. Goes right to the bones.

Hi Nina, if you would like to forward the words to me, I can give you the translation, provided the language is in Tswana; should be....that is the native language in Botswana.

Nina, your granddaughters could probably write several books about their experiences. What interesting lives they lead!

Nina, here's the webpage for "BookCrossing":
http://www.bookcrossing.com/
Sounds like an interesting concept.
It's been hot so far, up in the 80's, and raining. Hot and humid, yeech. Swamp air. lol
A cool front is at last coming through tonight, and I can see the heat lightening in the distance. Supposed to not get out of the 60's tomorrow! Oh Yays! Hope it lasts. heh

Right now at about 11:30 AM, it's only 40 degrees. Our begonias are still alive. :) Begonias are the easiest flowers to grow and seem to be the hardiest. They get my vote for lasting the longest under any circumstances, dry, wet, shady, sunny.
There are two kinds of begonias. The following photo shows the kind I'm referring to:
http://picasaweb.google.com/Sea1934/M...
I'm not sure what they are called (as opposed to tuberous begonias).
Does anybody know?
LOL A cool front came through Thursday night, it rained and thundered all night long, and didn't get out of the 60's yesterday. Today was cool and windy and dry. It's about time! We've had nothing but gray and rain for almost 2 weeks.
Only problem with this weather is how the dryness affects my sinuses. ugh. It's 60F right now at 7:30 p.m. I can take this all winter. :)
Joy, those begonias are beautiful. They don't do well for me for some reason though, only lasting one season usually.

Pontalba, our begonias last only one season, but they bloom steadily from spring through fall.

Jim, I agree. In fact, anything below 60F (16C) is too cold. :)

That's great, Nina. Every time I think of hibiscus, I think of our wonderful cruise to Bermuda back in the 1990s. It was the only cruise I ever took and the only location outside of Canada and the USA which I've ever been in. I still can't believe I was really there. I loved all the lovely pastel colored houses on the hills and, of course, all the colorful flowers.

Enjoy your nice weather, Jenni. I know absolutely nothing about the weather in Iowa. Are the winters very cold? Do you get much snow? (In fact, I have to admit that before I looked at the map just now, I wasn't even sure about Iowa's exact location!) :)
It would be a good idea to compare the general latitudes of the states represented by our members here. So far I've found the following (south to north):
Louisianna: Lat = 31 degrees, 14.7 minutes North
Kentucky: Lat = 37 degrees, 50.4 minutes North
Kansas: Lat = 39 degrees, 0.7 minutes North
Iowa: Lat = 41 degrees, 52.7 minutes North
New York State: Lat = 43 degrees, 18.0 minutes North
Of course, the latitudes of different locations in each state may vary.
NOTE: To find latitude and longitude online see:

I'm just about 50 miles north of New Orleans, this site doesn't list my city, but these are the coordinates for N.O. http://www.bcca.org/misc/qiblih/latlo... You can click on your state.
New Orleans AP 29° 59' N 90° 15' W

Thanks for the info and the link, Pontalba.

Winters do get quite cold. The last few years we've gotten a lot of snow... but I think that New York gets more than we do. We've already seen snow in Iowa this year! Usually we don't get our first snow until November. We had a really cool summer, so I'm a little afraid that it'll mean an extra cold winter.

Yes, Jenni, there seems to have been a lot of early snow this year. I'm ready to hibernate! :)

Glad you received the link to this page, Nina. I hope you've made sure that your addy is verified at your GR account page. Otherwise you won't get notifications.
Wow, 70 degrees. It's spring again. :)
Our leaves have turned and peaked already here, but our trees still have lots of lovely color. The air smells crisp. Today we took in 5 roses from our garden... probably the last ones we'll see this year. The edges of the petals were a little bit nipped by the frost, but they're still lovely. Our begonias were thoroughly nipped by last night's frost.

Doesn't matter right now as its still dark out and I'm not venturing anywhere at least until the Sun pops up over the mountains.
Good news is that the temps will rise to about 58 degrees. Yippee! Good day for a walk down by the Lake (2 miles south of my house so yes, I must drive to get there).

Yes, the weather report for Glens Falls says: "Partly sunny. The high in the mid 50s.".
Enjoy your walk, Linda.

Prediction for tonight in Glens Falls, NY:
"Cold with lows around 19." Bundle up!
There was ice in our bird bath this morning. :-(

Right now, at about 1 PM, we have sunshine and the temp is up to 42°F (6 °C). We had higher temps several days ago though. Also had some cold, wet rain a few days ago. Those dark, damp days make me sleepy. :) Nap time! LOL

Today: Sunny, with a high near 48. Calm wind.
Tonight: Clear, with a low around 19.
