Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's interesting that the salt won't melt the ice if it's too cold. I didn't know that.

message 1002: by Werner (new)

Werner Here in the Bluefields, we got our first snow of the season overnight, and it's still falling. So far, the accumulation seems to be about two inches, enough to cover the ground and trees in a very pretty fashion.

message 1003: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Miserable day here! It's 32 or a bit less out, the snow is melting & freezing on the vehicles. A dusting here & there, but we were close to 80 on Monday. Too drastic a drop! The wind is blowing hard & gusting, too.

I didn't walk Indy far after mucking the stalls because it was like flying a kite armed with war hammers. He got wild, rearing & kicking up his heels for no other reason than he's feeling too good. He has 8 or 9 more days of stall rest, too. Ugh. He's going to pop.

message 1004: by Werner (new)

Werner Snow has been falling heavily here this morning ever since before I got up, and still is; so we're looking out our windows at a very white-covered world. Barb estimates it to be about two and a half inches deep already, and the snowplows are out. So whether or not we have a white Christmas this year, the odds look very likely for a white Thanksgiving!

message 1005: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Stay warm! We're bright & sunny, although it was only in the mid 20's this morning.

message 1006: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Werner do you like in upstate NY?

message 1007: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) He's in western Virginia, Nina.

message 1008: by Werner (new)

Werner Jim is correct, Nina; I live in the southwestern part of Virginia, in the Appalachian mountains and near the West Virginia border. (Joy and Jackie are the upstate New Yorkers in our group who come readily to mind, though we undoubtedly have some others as well.)

message 1009: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We expect rain, snow, and sleet on Tuesday, 12/9/14. My sister was supposed to visit us but I doubt if she'll make the hour trip in this bad weather.

message 1010: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments About the Christmas cards coming via mail versus the electronic. I still prefer the old fashioned way of reading my cards first when I get them and after Christmas I savor a cup of tea and a fire on the grate and re-reading them all over again. However, if any of my friends decide to send them email, I just savor them at the time and are pleased they are thinking of me.

message 1011: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Dec 09, 2014 07:52PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I too enjoy re-reading the cards, even a year later!
Yes, if they come by email I don't mind either.

message 1012: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 03, 2015 06:03PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have a light covering of snow here, about an inch or more. I thought Christmas was over!

Forecast doesn't look good. Current temp in Queensbury, NY is 22°F/-6°C. Freezing rain is in the forecast. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick....

message 1013: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We've got a front blowing in. It's been raining buckets since yesterday early morning & the temp went up to 60. It had been in the teens & hadn't gone above the 30's much for weeks. This morning it's still 54 & raining buckets off & on. Lots & lots of wind. I'll have to go out & check the fence line through the woods when it gets light out. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the dead ash trees hadn't blown down.

message 1014: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Stay dry, Jim. Wear your galoshes. :) We have rain predicted here too. Temp is 31°F/-1°C with a predicted high of 48 degrees. Well, that's better than snow!

message 1015: by Mary JL (new)

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments In the wilds of Omaha, Nebraska we had only about two inches of snow. However, winds are gusting at over 35mph, so wind chill advisories are in effect.

Wind chills expected this morning between -15 to-30 F!

definitely staying inside today!!

Wow, Mary JL, DO stay inside today. It's much too cold to go outside, especially with the wind. I hate going outside in the winter!

message 1017: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Mary's cold weather is supposed to get here Wed night. Single digit real temps, but well below 0 with the wind chill. Yuck. No trees down! I took a short ride on Chip to check it out. He was feeling good & Indy was pestering him, so we had a fun ride. Lots of cantering & bucking. He bucks like a sofa, though. Not scary at all.

message 1018: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Funny descripton Jim of a horse bucking like a sofa. I'd like to see that.

message 1019: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina wrote: "Funny descripton Jim of a horse bucking like a sofa. I'd like to see that."

What does that mean?

BTW, we expect a cold spell here. We might have to leave a faucet trickling to keep the water flowing so the pipes won't freeze.

message 1020: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It means that Chip tries to buck, but he's fat & not very athletic. His little bumps don't stand a chance of knocking me off.

Oh, I see. Poor Chip, he can't buck you off. LOL

message 1022: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) He's really having a good time & it's his way of showing it.

message 1023: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Hope our horses here don't freeze.

Nina, that would be terrible!

message 1026: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The news just posted a thing comparing our weather to Anchorage, Alaska. We're going to be colder. That's not right!
:(

message 1027: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Think spring!

message 1028: by Werner (new)

Werner Our weather here has turned bitterly cold. The temperature this morning, when I walked into work, was 22 degrees; and I'm sure that it's as cold or colder now.

message 1029: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're a bit warmer this morning, 23 degrees, but tomorrow is supposed to be just bitter cold & so is Thursday.

message 1030: by Nina (last edited Jan 07, 2015 10:08AM) (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Tomorrow is starting at zero and getting colder/Thursday almost as cold. Finally Friday and the weekend in the twenties/night and day so hopefully next week will show better temps. One good thing about our area/no bad weather lasts long and definitely not all winter like farther up north. Stay warm and hope for better news. I must now bundle up and put out birdseed so I don't have to venture out in the cold in the morning.

message 1031: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Current temp here is 11°F / -12°C. A low of 5 degrees F is expected tonight. Tomorrow they predict a 50% chance of heavy snow! I do envy the people in Florida right now!

message 1032: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We started out at a balmy 18 degrees this morning, but the temp is supposed to fall to 0 or below by midnight. It's down to 15 & snowing right now. Yuck.

Jim, that's unusual weather for Kentucky, isn't it?

message 1034: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) When I figure out what 'usual weather for KY' is, I'll let you know, Joy.
;)

What is unusual is for us to stick with any weather for very long. We're right in the middle where a lot of weather meets. We can get almost as cold as Chicago when fronts sweep down from the northwest or be as warm as LA when it sweeps up from the southwest. The various fronts often converge on top of us, thus the tornadoes below us. The Ohio often pushes west moving fronts just north of us, too. It's very weird & unstable.

message 1035: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Well, Jim, at least you have variety! :) We have variety in NYS too. For one thing, it necessitates having several kinds of clothes, some for each kind of weather. At this point, I'd prefer mild weather all the time. I guess Hawaii is the place for that. It gets TOO hot in the Bahamas.

message 1036: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Right now, the variety is damn cold. It's 8 degrees out & falling. Lexington is supposed to hit 0 tonight, so we could easily be a few degrees colder. The high tomorrow is the mid teens - maybe. Brrr...

I really have a problem with jackets over the winter. I wind up with 3 or 4 out & a vest or two. If I get too hot, I sweat & get cold. Or I get too cold. Mix & match, peel & put on as the temp changes.

message 1037: by Werner (new)

Werner We're bitter cold here, too; our temperature was at 9 degrees when I was coming home from work in the late afternoon, and is no doubt falling. (We have a fair amount of snow as well.) Mercer County's schools were closed today, and will be again tomorrow.

message 1038: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 07, 2015 03:54PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's 3°F here and the weather report says it may go down to a low of -17 °F tonight.

Hope everyone and everything will be OK.

Our weather man says it will "warm" up to two degrees tomorrow. I guess we're all in a deep freeze. Hot tea and a good book is my prescription but not that good for those who must venture outside and go to work. Most of our schools are closed so maybe Marge won't be on the job tomorrow. I am saddened by the Paris news. Such a lovely memory of being there is now shared with sorrow for those who no longer are. What Freedom of the Press?

Nina | 6069 comments Oh to be in England now that April is here/I wish on both counts.

message 1041: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 07, 2015 07:12PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I'm so glad I don't have to go out! I feel sorry for people who have to walk their dogs! Our temp right now is -2°F. Wind Chill = -18°F
http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick....

message 1042: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was -1 when I left the house this morning. It will probably go down a few more degrees before dawn, but at least the wind died down. The new dog door isn't blowing open, but the small gaps on the side were letting in too much cold air yesterday so Marg had to close it. Not a big problem since the dogs didn't want to go out much anyway.

The barn stays about 10 degrees warmer than the outside temperature & the goats' house is warmer than that. They're all fluffed up when they stand inside, but were running around like wild things yesterday afternoon. The ground was still soft (It was 54 & wet Sunday morning.) & they love the combination of cold, wind, & soft ground. Indy & Chip have been playing a lot.

message 1043: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Glad your animals are happy, Jim. At least SOMEONE is enjoying the cold! lol

message 1044: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I always worry about my daughter's horses. Glad yours seem OK. Her little rat terriors have warm coats so that helps. Nine degrees this morning And cold wind blowing. Birds are huddling. I know the feeling.

message 1045: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Think spring! :)

message 1046: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments As I said earlier, "Oh to be in England now that Spring is here." I often quote Wordsworth as those are my feelings exactly, especially this week of really cold weather. But, we only have a smattering of snow so it could be worse.

message 1047: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 08, 2015 03:00PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, that Wordsworth quote is very apt right now! Oh to be ANYWHERE where it's spring! lol

message 1048: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Our 'warm' spell is over. From a low of -1 yesterday morning, we rose all the way into the very low 20's this morning, but now the temp is heading back down & will likely be 0 or below tomorrow morning. Brrr!

The good news is, Marg got me a new vest. Unfortunately, the color is a florescent puke green, nothing like the picture on LL Bean's website. Still, it's warm & has a nylon surface, so I like it. My old one was fleece & that's just a sawdust magnet. I've asked her to get me another, but in the dark green, the only other color available so I can use it for work.

message 1049: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Well, Jim, with the green vest, you're all ready for St Patty's Day! lol

I used to give warm vests to my dad for Christmas. He always wore them. In fact I wear a warm fleece vest from LL Bean with a matching cardigan. I have them in several colors. Nice and soft and warm.

We have several inches of snow here this morning. It's almost chest high for our Maltese. He plows through to the bare spots under the bushes.

message 1050: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) No snow here, thankfully. We got a little, but it evaporated. It's very dry. Sunday into Monday we might get ugly. There's a warm front moving up from the gulf that will be meeting another polar front. Depending on where they meet, we could get freezing rain or snow.
