Nina | 6069 comments Hope miserable Marge is better soon. And Joy, I love learning the new words for flu misery, "poorlies," as the British are so very literal.

I WROTE:
Thanks, Bob. I think "poorlies" is a good word.
Congrats to Sisu for coining it as a noun! It's very useful.
I hope all of Sisu's poorlies will be feeling better soon.
Best regards to all!

===============================================

So, you see, Nina, it's a special word which seems to have been coined at the newsgroup.
I think I will use it here at this group too. :)

PS-Sisu is short for SilverSurfers.
Also UPS is short for uk.people.silversurfers, the name of the newsgroup.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Marg is still poorly, but getting better. Erin & I are keeping the house going, but I think some of the appliances miss her. I swear the dryer took twice as long to dry & I started the dishwasher only to find it didn't run over an hour later.

That was a crimp in my day since I had to change out the faucet set in the small bathroom's tub today. There wasn't any access hole to get to it. I cut one & there were no shutoff valves, so I had to turn off water to the entire house while replaced it. Of course, neither the dish washer nor the washer could be running while I did that.

It was our last nice day for a while, got just into the 40's, & was sunny without much wind. It's finally dried out some, so I got a nice ride on Chip & did some other chores. I got the barn all cleaned up & patched up some holes. The dirt pile was wet, but not muddy. Tonight it is supposed to get real cold for the next week, but no rain is forecast, thankfully.

message 804: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Hope Marg will keep improving, Jim.
Sounds like you're keeping busy as usual.
Stay warm and well. Erin too.

message 805: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Is Marge up to drinking a Hot Toddy? That was always a jump start to me feeling better when I had one.

message 806: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) She likes tea, but neither of us drink alcohol any more.

message 807: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim wrote: "She likes tea, but neither of us drink alcohol any more."Well,in that case Camomille is a good choice and plenty of it.

message 808: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) She does drink plenty of that.

The temperature is plummeting. It stayed in the mid 20's all day, but a cold, cold wind came up about when we went out to feed tonight. Now we're down to 15 & we're supposed to hit the single digits. Brrr.

message 809: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Dress warm, Jim!

message 810: by Werner (new)

Werner Jim, as usual, our weather here is similar to yours. The temperature is already 17 degrees here, and they expect it to be 17 degrees below zero tomorrow during the day, if you factor in the wind chill. :-(

message 811: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wow, you too, Werner?
We have 19 degrees here right now.

message 812: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I don't do wind chills or heat indexes. The temperature plummeted to 10 degrees. I know it was that cold at 3am since we had to put the slider in the dog door. I guess Molly couldn't wake anyone else up, so I had to let her out then. Lily went out at the same time, but did her business quickly. Molly seemed to take forever. Of course, time drags when you're half asleep standing naked by the back door just waiting for the dog to come back in. I kept dozing & leaning against the glass - very briefly. Chilly!!!
:-)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim wrote: "... Of course, time drags when you're half asleep standing naked by the back door just waiting for the dog to come back in. ..."

Waiting for the dog to come back-in can be a pain in the neck! I've been trying a new method of getting Romeo to come back in. I ring a cowbell with which he associates his treat. (I conditioned him to that.) When he hears the cowbell, he usually comes running back to get his treat (a small "Chicken Nibble").

I dare not leave the door when he's out because one time I forgot that our elderly & weak dog, jorji, was outside and he suffered out in the extreme cold for several hours before Eddie discovered him and got him back in. I still cringe when I think of him suffering out there like that.

Ummm, BTW, naked? :) Get a bathrobe! LOL

message 814: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I do own a bath robe, just didn't think of it. The dogs don't care how I'm dressed nor do the horses, the only other ones that could have seen me.

That's why I stayed by the back door, too. It's so easy to forget that time of night. I really wasn't too awake & figured if I moved from the door, I might not see her come up to it & she might go off elsewhere again. I wanted that chore done ASAP.

message 815: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I guess it was too cold for streaking.

message 816: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'm pretty casual about clothes around the house - too casual according to Marg & the kids. There was never much of a body taboo at home. If it was warm enough to swim, I'd generally just strip & go swimming. If anyone was around, the pond & creek were far enough off they'd need binoculars to get a good look. Often enough, we got dirty enough to have to hose off or swim outside before going into the house, anyway.

Then I joined the Army & we used to go through lines naked so they could give us all the shots we needed without hindrance, not to mention a bathroom without stalls, just 8 toilets in the center of the room. Half faced the sinks, the other half an open shower room with 8 shower heads. It's pretty tough to worry about your modesty with 30 other guys in such situations.

So clothes are just for pockets & looks - & most do look better!
;-)

Otherwise, I've seen naked people. Most people have. Not a big deal. If it is & they're around me in my house, the door isn't hard to find.

message 817: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments My husband who was in the Navy says the same about so called "modesty" in the service.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments When we were first married, we used to do our laundry at my MIL's house. Somehow they noticed that there were no pajamas or nighties among the rest of our clothing. I was slightly embarrassed... um...bare*ssed. :)

"I've been to nudist beaches, like twice. But honestly, I just don't want to see these people naked. Most people look better with their clothes on, and the few that don't, look better than you, so why bother?"
-Peter Buck

I think on-stage nudity is disgusting, shameful and damaging to all things American. But if I were 22 with a great body, it would be artistic, tasteful, patriotic and a progressive religious experience.
-Shelley Winters

Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence in society.
-Mark Twain

"If God had meant us to walk around naked, he would never have invented the wicker chair."
-Erma Bombeck

a pretty girl who is naked is worth a million statues
-e.e.cummings

IMO, one of the most awful scenes would be seeing a nudist club at a bowling alley. A-a-argh!

message 820: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I love Erma's remark. I was once at a topless beach in Cannes France in the winter. The young girls ran to the beach with their fur coats wrapped about them and then dropped them on the beach chairs and Oila! they were topless. Kind of funny.

message 821: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Jan 22, 2013 02:32PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, what a scene! I once glimpsed a few people at a nudist beach on Fire Island but didn't see much. I glanced the other way. I must have been walking along the shore when our boat was moored overnight at Watch Hill Marina on Fire Island downstate in NY. It made me uncomfortable when I saw them.

Thanks, Jim. It's an interesting category. :)

message 824: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Same weather today as yesterday - cold & dry, starting out at 10 degrees - which is actually kind of nice. Well, it's not fun, but a good freeze will kill off some of the pesky bugs & at least the temperature is stable. This bouncing 40 degrees per day gets old.

I've never been interested in going to a nudist beach, although I went to Fire Island a lot as a kid. I think that's where I went swimming with my first 'waterproof' cast. Before that, they'd always been plaster & fell apart just from sweat & wear quickly. This one didn't, but the amount of rocks & sand I got into it was pretty amazing. My cousin & I sawed it off, washed everything off & duct taped it back on. The doctor was NOT amused. Furious, in fact.

Doctors are very protective of the casts they make. Brandon's was upset because he went through several when he broke his leg. He was an energetic 5 year old, what did the old fuddy duddy expect? My last one was so busted up after 3 weeks the doctor threw it away & wouldn't give me another. Just told me not to hit my arm on anything or I'd regret it. No sense of humor.
;-)

message 825: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments About casts. I remember when our son needed a cast on his hand (can't remember which injury it was; there were so many with 4 sons!). The doctor set it so he could still play the piano with his fingers poking out the end. Also faced his hand downward to make it possible to play the piano. He was taking piano lessons at the time.

I remember the sand in my bathing suit from Jones Beach. After plowing through the waves and the churned up water, I smarted from the irritating sand. :)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments It's been terribly cold, tonight it's supposed to get down to -19F. It's noon and only 3 degrees right now. Thank the Dogs we don't have a wind chill factor going on at the moment.

message 828: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That is chilly. We're in the 20's somewhere, thankfully.

message 829: by Werner (new)

Werner Wow, our current temperature is up to 28 degrees. Heat wave! :-)

message 830: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Jim is in the tropics compared to here, lol

message 831: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Werner too!

message 832: by Werner (new)

Werner Yes, Jackie, when we think we're cold, it makes us feel warmer thinking about you poor folks up in New York. You've got our sympathy!

message 833: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Ah, it's January in Upstate. We know it'll end.
Upstate NY ain't for sissies, that's for sure, lol

message 834: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I've been in most states in most seasons. It's not a mistake that I live where I do.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, is the lake frozen yet near you?
We received an email from a friend saying that their part of Lake George froze last night.
If I remember correctly, the lake hasn't frozen the last few years.
Current temp here is 1 degree F
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/f...

message 836: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments This end of the Lake freezes. Only twice in the last 10 years it didn't; before that it was more than 50 years since the last time. It was a big deal, that's why I remember.

In 2004, on this day/night we had a record low of -23, and in 2010 we had a record high of 54.

message 837: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're in the mid 20's & just had a light coating of freezing rain. Weird. It's supposed to be really ugly about the time I go home.

message 838: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, I know they always hope for a good freeze on the lake in time for the Winter Festivals at Lake George Village.

Wow, -23! I hope we don't see that again. It's only 2 degrees right now. Our old house can't keep up with the cold temps; it can't maintain the indoor temps we like. I am getting very tired of this cold weather!

Jim, hope you got home safely.

message 839: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It turned out to be no problem, Joy. While we could have gotten about an inch, it stopped quickly. Apparently the air was too dry for most of it to make it to the ground, thankfully.

Today is supposed to be our last cold day. By the middle of the week we might be up into the 60's! We're all just getting used to the cold now.

I still haven't used my heavy coat, just my tweed jacket with my old fleece vest. I like that because when I get to doing something like the hay yesterday, I can heat up pretty quick. There's a big difference between being in the barn doing heavy lifting & walking out in the fields.

message 840: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Joy, our house was built as a summer home, our insulation is a joke, old crank-out single pane windows; it's a nightmare in winter. I'm always cold. Good thing I have an electric blanket or I'd freeze to death.

message 841: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We got up into the low 40's today. It was dry for a change so I pushed the manure pile up & did some touch ups on the grading around the barn. A minor, quick chore except for my help.

The horses had been in the south field, so I let the goats out & they ran out with them. The tractor is parked in the big barn at the north end of the north field & the barn is in between. I was grading when Cutter & Speedy decided to investigate. The goats & Chip followed them. Then they saw the big barn doors were open & headed for it. That's not only different, but is where the bulk of the hay is stored.

So I had to quit grading & drive over there real fast to head them off. Speedy heard me coming & made a real bee line for it. I got the front end loader ahead of him just in time. He pinned his ears & took off back the way he came. Then all of them started running around. They flew back past the horse barn into the south field & back to the horse barn again. I watched them just blowing off steam for a few minutes while I closed everything up.

Of course, they all went back to the south field & never came near the big barn again. Ten minutes later, I had to open back up again to put everything away. They're such big helpers!
;-)

message 842: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments 40s! I am so envious! Our high was 23. What a different 17 degrees makes, because 40s would be positively beautiful right about now.

Nice that you were able to get some yard work done. We had a warm period a couple of weeks ago, and I was able to get a jump on some of the massive Spring yard work I have to do every year. It felt great!

Smart kids heading for the hay, lol I can see all this happening and I'm getting quite a laugh!

message 843: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're supposed to hit 60 this week. It's raining hard now. Just when I was getting used to the cold & really enjoying the dry ground. Oh well...

message 844: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments 60s, now I'm really turning green with envy!

message 845: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jackie, YES on electric blankets! :)

Jim, those animals certainly keep you busy!
Enjoy your warmer weather. Send some our way. :)

message 846: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments In the sixties here tomorrow so they are probably headed your way, Jim.

message 847: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was, Nina. After single digit temps last week, it was 67 this morning when I left the house. The wind was crazy. Halfway to work, the rain came down in sheets, so we crawled along I-64 at 40mph. It was 57 degrees when I got here. It's supposed to go down into the mid 20's tonight & that's the high the next day, then possibly drop into single digits. Brrr....

message 848: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments We never got that promised 40s and 50s. I knew we wouldn't. It's raining now, so it's warmer than it has been but hardly enjoyable weather.

message 849: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wet and foggy here. A miserable day. Temp 45F but damp and uncomfortable.

message 850: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Weather Channel said high 40s for yesterday, high 50s for today, and nothing about rain either day. They lied.
I don't plan my days by the Weather Channel, every time I do, I'm dressed wrong. I use Weather Channel as hope we might get that weather, lol
