Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Take care of yourself, Nina. Gargle with warm salt water. That's what I do. :)

Temp here right now is 27 degrees. That's better than the freezing weather we had last night. It was down to a bit below zero.

message 652: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're in the mid 50's this morning. Yeah, it's been a real roller coaster. Hope the cold doesn't get you.

message 653: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The weather right now is tornado warning. Everyone in the building is hiding in the bathrooms or against concrete walls. My office is against one of the tornado shelter walls, so I guess I'll just stay here.

message 654: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Not a fun day for you. Stay safe. I have been in multiple warning situations and so far so good. Once I looked out our living room picture window and there was the huge black cloud headed right toward us. I yelled at the kids; grabbed the cat and ran to the basement. It went over and NOT down. Scarey for a few minutes. When the big one hit Joplin it proceeded over us and we could hear it but again we were spared. Hope that is the case for you.

message 655: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) There was some damage not too far away. I'm not sure exactly where, though. The Lexington stations don't handle much Louisville news, but they did say it was on Waterson Trail, which is a road right next to us. Thankfully, it was pretty limited.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Every once in a while we hear of tornadoes in downstate NY where we used to live. Wiki says: "Mahopac-area historical tornado activity is significantly above New York state average. It is 1% greater than the overall U.S. average."
FROM: http://www.city-data.com/city/Mahopac...

What is your Tornado rating?
Glad you're OK.

message 657: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Good news. You are safe.

message 658: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I don't know what our tornado rating is, but it really depends on where you are. They get fair few going through KY. A couple-few years ago we had something like 27 at once, but that's mostly south & west sides where it is flat. While my neighbor, Curtis (86), remembers a tornado or two up our way, there aren't many. Tornadoes don't like hills much & we have an abundance of those.

Well, that's a good thing! :)

message 660: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It is, Joy.

Our temperature plummeted again. We're back down around freezing. Boy, but we've been up & down a lot lately - every where from the teens with high, cutting winds up to the 60's. It's tough to deal with because we have no time to acclimate.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's windy here too.
Temp is 28.6 F

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, did you just finish reading,"The Girl With the Pearl Earing?" I watched the movie last night and I am wondering about the ending. Did Griet go to live with the dirty old man? This was after she was thrown out of the Vermeer house by the wife. Just curious.

Nina, I read Girl With a Pearl Earring a while ago. I gave it 4 Goodreads stars out of 5.

As for the movie, I think I watched it a while ago but have only a vague memory of it. So I'm not sure about the ending. It's a shame that we can't remember so much of what we've read or seen. Seems a great loss. But then we have to remember that we were entertained at the time and that was the main benefit.

message 665: by Werner (new)

Werner Right now, we're experiencing a severe winter storm, with heavy snowfall, which is why I'm at home instead of at work; I closed the library at 5:00. Some predictions are calling for as much as 10 inches of snow by the time it stops (down from earlier estimates of a foot, but only slightly). When I got home, the outside temperature here was 35 degrees (it was 32 in the hollow near the Bluestone River, where it's typically colder), and likely to drop fast during the night. At this rate, the snow will lay, and accumulate.

message 666: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Stay warm. It is the opposite here; only in 1923 did this area have this little snow. I have yet to see a snowflake fall. I must be careful what I wish for; not ten inches, just some flakes on my face.

message 667: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Wow, Werner, it's unusual to see such weather in Virginia. We had a slight snowfall Saturday which left a slight layer of snow like icing on a cake on our lawn. While our kids were driving from downstate NY to visit us here in the "North Country" of NY, they saw only rain.

Temp here right now is 24 degrees at 4:18 AM, on Monday, 2/20/12, our 51st Anniversary. All the family came for the weekend and are staying over. The grands have the week off. I just realized that there was one advantage to having this winter date as our anniversary and that is: Our grands are free to visit us and help us celebrate and our boys have a long weekend so that they can travel and visit us.

message 668: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I can't imagine living where there is no snow... even though snow can be a big bother at times. One thing about winter, it's a cozy time. But I do look forward to spring and summer.

message 669: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) 51 years! Congrats Joy & Ed!!!

Originally, they said we might get 2 - 6" of snow out of the system that is pounding Werner, but the dry high pressure moved in just a bit faster than they thought & we didn't get any at all. South & especially east was supposed to get more snow. I guess they are. I'm glad it's you & not me, Werner!
;-)

message 670: by Werner (new)

Werner Yes, Joy, congratulations to both you and Ed on your special day! 51 years together --that's wonderful!

Actually, this weather isn't that unusual in the Appalachian part of Virginia, where the altitude makes the temperatures colder. It would be more unusual in the lower-lying Piedmont and Tidewater regions, though.

Jim wrote: "I'm glad it's you & not me, Werner! ;-)". I don't blame ya, buddy, and I'm glad too for you guys that you missed it; but since I got to come home from work early, my cloud had its silver lining. :-) It was a good night to be inside and warm! Our grandkids don't have to worry about going to school this morning, since the WV schools were already scheduled to be closed for President's Day, so that's another plus. The snow has stopped falling here, but the outside world is covered with what I'd guess to be about eight inches, judging from the accumulations on the fenceposts --very beautiful, when you're not shoveling it! :-)

message 671: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I didn't see any notice of your anniversary but hope it was special. Aren't they always a wonderful reminder of what's important to us in life...i, too, can't imagine a winter with this little snow. It's feast or famine here; blizzards or barely covering the ground in white. My daughter lives in ID about seventy miles from the Canadian border and she says they have seven inches of snow on the ground; plus, hundreds of robins on top. Unusual but very pretty with red splotches on white.

message 672: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Odd winter; in the fifties today and expected high of sixty four tomorrow. Not hard to believe spring will be here in a month. Today would have been my father's 108th birthday. He used to say he and George Washington almost shared a birthday. Do any of you remember that we actually celebrated George's birthday on Feb. 22nd? I alwasys baked my Dad a cherry pie for his birthday.

message 673: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We have the same odd weather going on, Nina, but a day behind you. It didn't quite hit 50 today here, but was upper 40's which felt pretty warm.

I do remember when we had Washington & Lincoln's birthdays. Then they made it President's Day & we got MLK day.

message 674: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Thanks for the anniversary wishes, everyone. Actually, it was our 52nd anniversary. I had mistakenly said 51st above. Time flies when you're having fun! :) As I said in another topic here, we had a great weekend with the family.

Weather was pretty stable. The current temp is 35.8 at 8:34 PM ET.

message 675: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Weird bloody weather we're having. Thursday evening it was 65 & I heard peepers. This morning it's 29 & windy with a dash of snow. Ugh.

message 676: by Werner (new)

Werner Same here, Jim --yesterday was relatively pleasant and mild, but it turned cold during the night, with a fairly heavy dusting of snow. The latest Weather Channel reading on the local temperature, a little while ago, indicated a wind chill factor of 17 degrees above zero.

message 677: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Your mild weather was just a tease.

I woke up this morning to see a layer of white snow in the backyard, almost an inch. Romeo's little footprints in the snow looked so cute. Our current temp is 38.5F. Last night it went down to 24 degrees.

message 678: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It is supposed to get to the mid-60's today, but right now we have pea sized hail & torrential rain. I thought this weather was supposed to move in tonight. Yuck.

I'm leaving soon. Marg is off so I thought we could do some stuff together today. I guess we'll have to play indoor games.

;-)

message 679: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Our weather man said tonight we had a week of four seasons; spring(seventy yesterday)winter( a touch of rain/snow this morning)fall(forites during the day) and all the rest of the week ahead above seventy so it's the beginning of summer? Crazy.

message 680: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We had snow yesterday. It was a heavy, wet snow and seemed to be about 6 or 8 inches deep. Kind of slushy. Our current temp is 34.2.

Nina and Jim, enjoy your mild weather when you have it!

message 681: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina, a week of 4 seasons sounds about right.

It's 30 here this morning, but hit 70 yesterday afternoon. While tornadoes struck north & south of us, the whirling buggers stayed out of the hills where I live, thank goodness. We had to have the dog door closed most of the day & evening due to high winds.

message 682: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, I heard about those tornadoes on PBS news radio today. How awful for those people who were affected. I thought about you when I heard the news. Glad you're OK.

message 683: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was very bad fairly close to us, but not here, thank goodness. I heard something about 57 reported tornadoes, I think. Lots of hail - baseball sized just up in Owenton, where we got Rosie & Buttercup. It was a mean day.

message 684: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 03, 2012 12:06PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I found lots of YouTube videos showing the baseball size hail. Below are a couple of samples:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9gIsr...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndkaKw...
Noisy stuff!

We've seen large hail but not THAT large! Wow! You don't want to be hit by any of that stuff. It must hurt!

PS-WOW! Look at THIS hail in Texas:

message 685: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Wow! Those were some mean hail storms.

message 686: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We're supposed to get 1-3" of snow tonight starting about 11pm & ending around 7am. That should make the morning drive miserable.
:(

message 687: by Joy H., Group Founder (last edited Mar 04, 2012 07:33PM) (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, let us know how the snow storm turns out. Drive safe.

Our snow is still on the ground but it's melting fast. Temps went up to the 40s today. It's now 29.4.

message 688: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Rough night last night. About 1am, the power started flickering & kept it up until 4am when it went out. Do you know how many things go bump, grind, or beep when the power goes out for a few seconds? We're not sure either, but far too many did. We got almost now sleep.

And we got 5.5" of snow. Yuck!!! No school today & I'm taking the day off work. The power came back on, but the roads look like crap & I'm exhausted. I had the generator running for about an hour & we heated coffee & tea water on the Coleman stove, so our emergency supplies & routines worked well.

Marg gave me a cool little flashlight for Xmas that has a hook & magnet plus 2 different sets of LED's, so it is really versatile. It was perfect for this. I used the hook to hang it on my chest & was able to get the generator out of the shop, filled with gas, started & do all that other stuff without holding it, yet still had light. Awesome.

message 689: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, do you lost power often? If so, perhaps you might consider an automatic generator. Hope things improve today. Meanwhile, get some rest if you can.

I guess 5.5" of snow is a lot for your part of the country, no? How often do you get snow? Does it get deep?

message 690: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) We lose power a few times a year, but rarely for too long, although we did for 6 days during an ice storm 2 years ago.

I've thought about an automatic & whole house generator, but can't justify either the cost or the fuel it would take. We have an all electric house, so something that would run the 50amp furnace & the 30amp hot water heater needs to be pretty hefty. That would mean a huge fuel tank that would rarely, if ever get used.

Big, contractor type generators would be OK & they're not terribly expensive - if they were in good shape. Unless they're used fairly often & maintained properly, they tend to lose their charge & there is no guarantee they'll put out the right electric. It's not uncommon for them to put out the voltage at 50 cycles or so. Not a problem for a circular saw, but it will kill energy efficient devices like the fridge & freezer.

So I settled on getting a 2000 watt Honda with special circuitry that has a guaranteed proper electric output. It won't run the furnace or the hot water, but will run the fridge or freezer as well as a couple of lights. It weighs about the same as a 5 gallon can of gas, so is light enough that I can pick it up with one hand & set it in the truck bed. It's quiet & starts easily, so is really handy around the farm, as well as good for power outages. It runs for about 4 hours at full load on a gallon of gas & I keep 2 full 5 gallon cans on hand.

Instead of running the furnace, I have 2 - 30 lb propane tanks that I used in MD to heat my shop with a propane heater rated for indoor use & a carbon monoxide detector. They last about 1.5 days each. We have a Coleman portable stove & a gas grill that can use the same 1 lb gas cans or, more usually, the 20 lb tank that I can also easily take out to the tack room with another gas heater. I have to keep it warm since there is water out there that could freeze.

So, it's a hassle, but we can make do quite well without electric for at least several days & can probably make it into town to get refills after a couple, no matter what the weather.

We get some snow here, but it rarely sticks around too long. More often, we get ice storms that wreak havoc. We were lucky that this was just snow, but it was really wet & piled high. Check out my feed on Facebook & you'll see a couple of pictures.

Our weather is just weird because we're in a meeting point for southern & northern fronts. It was 70 here on Friday & we have 5.5" of snow today. That's not unheard of, but I can do without the dozens of tornadoes we got in between. 21 people died here in KY, more in Indiana, not far across the river from where I work.

message 691: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Jim, it looks like you have all the bases covered when it comes to electrical outages. Our automatic generator runs on propane. Once a week it automatically starts up and runs a test on itself. It's a 7,000 Watt generator, Generac brand.

What a shame about the fatalities from the tornado!

About ice storms, yes, they definitely can "wreak havoc", as you said. In addition to the damage to homes and the business losses, acres of trees have been lost in the Adirondacks because of ice storms.
http://www.adirondackdailyenterprise....
http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid...

I dread ice storms.

message 692: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'd get a propane whole house generator if I had a propane heater. I don't, so that's additional $2500 for a tank on top of the generator. Years ago, I could have gotten by with a few 100 lb tanks in series, but they won't do that any more. Anything over 250lbs & you have to get a buried tank around here.

Ice storms are bad. We've been lucky this year. Usually we get a few.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It was up in the 90's all weekend. I was plain tuckered by yesterday, even though I stayed out of the worst of the heat. Today it started to rain & it came down in buckets. Someone said we got 3" in the first 3 hours around Louisville. Marg says the rain caused the temp to drop to 65 at home. Yay!!!

We needed both the cool & the wet. It hasn't rained it 2 weeks & was getting too dry. The flies have been absolutely horrible, too.

message 700: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thelastwolf) | 4050 comments Joy, did you get any of that serious weather today? We had such severe thunderstorms and hail, there's a lot of damage. Windows blown out, holes in aluminum siding, cars with hundreds of dents each, windshields blown out or spiderwebbed. Eric lost his tail lights and mirror. Leaves and branches everywhere. Hail that fit in the palm of my hand. It was crazy...and loud! Afterwards the fog was so thick you couldn't see 10 feet in front of you. There were tornado watches all over the area but luckily we didn't get that. And poor Juneau hid under my bed the whole time. We have to go food shopping tomorrow but I'll have a lot of clean up to do when we get back.
The good news is, it's finally nice and cool! Good for sleeping tonight, I'm ready...lol
