Weather - What's YOUR weather today? (Part ONE - Started Sat., March 14, 2009) (Let's keep this going.)

Nina, I'm glad to hear that you are receiving notifications. Yes, having a sister is fun but having four daughters sounds just as nice!

That's great, Jim. Hope it keeps up so that you catch up to "normal".
I had to move my hanging impatiens out of the sun. The sun was burning their petals. My sister warned me this would happen!

Nina, what a great idea! I think I'll try that. I had moved one of the impatiens out front but now I think I'll move it to the sunny deck in the back again. I'll protect it with an umbrella on sunny days. I like watching the hummingbirds out on the deck.
The other impatiens is now on the table under the table umbrella. So it's protected. But we need the space on the table. Hmmm, maybe I'll put it on the table with the other impatiens and move it when we want to eat there. We have one table with an umbrella and one without. We like seeing the sky.

The Missouri River continues to flood in certain areas; they are getting sandbags ready in east Omaha. Council Bluffs, Iowa---just across the river from downtown Omaha--is much worse off and homes are threatened with flooding.
And more rain is predicted for this week!

Louisville had 30,000 people without power on Father's Day while we just got 1/2" of rain & no real problems. The power on flickered once. It's amazing what a difference 30 miles makes.
I had scheduled to replace my back door tomorrow, but it's supposed to rain again, so we're putting it off to Thursday. I'm not sorry about that at all. After 3 weeks with nary a drop, the fields really need it.

The Missouri River continues to flood in certain areas; they are getting sandbags ready in east Omaha..."
Mary JL, you've had your share of bad weather! Hope things will get better.
Here at Lake George it's cloudy today and we expect rain but the previous several days have been absolutely beautiful... sunny and mild with temps in the 70s and low 80s. Just right for enjoying setting up my flower pots and preparing things for the coming summer season. Had fun hosing down the garden furniture and cleaning old flower pots. The cold water from the hose felt good when it splashed on me. Simple pleasures...

The butterfly ornament sounds intriguing. Nowadays with solar cells, they're coming out with all sorts of novelties. We have a string of tiny colored lights on our deck, powered by a solar cell. I love getting all that light and color without plugging in any wires!
I bought a few mini-solar lights for our sons campsites this year. Just poke them in the ground. They were only $1.50 each at Walmarts. The pole part has red and white stripes. Fun for the kids. Keep the lights in the sun during the day... put them on the path to the outhouse during the night.

It was thundering & raining when I woke up at 4:30 this morning & I almost went into work, but hoped it would end. It did about 30 minutes later & became a nice day.
About 6am, a neighbor's mule paid us a visit. Speedy freaked out & broke out of his paddock, so I had to go out & fix that. It wasn't a huge problem, but was one more thing I didn't need. Then I caught the mule & tied it up until the neighbor could get here. I would have walked her back down to his place, just like we used to do when his little Quarter horse got loose, but that stupid mule didn't lead for spit. Doug got here & grabbed her just about the time Harry showed up to do the door. Interesting morning....

We've had lots of rain here lately. We've had some real downpours. I hope it doesn't affect my flower pots. The big blossoms on the geraniums are weighted down with the rain. I tried keeping our impatiens and the Gerber daisy on a table under the protection of our sun umbrella. Hope it helped.
A critter got into two of our large flower containers in the yard. Seems as if he actually ATE the tops off our begonias and dug up the baby plants. One of the little plants was on the ground outside of the container, roots and all. We suspect a chipmunk. This is a first for us. I've seen our hostas get eaten but not our begonias.
Our problems should always be as small as this.

I don't know why you should feel bad about not knowing about Church Hill Downs. I rarely keep up with the news because all they seem to mention is the bad stuff & most of it is hype, anyway. To hear the news tell it, kidnappings & murders are common occurrences & getting worse. In reality, their numbers are dropping. We just hear about them more. Besides, there isn't a lick I can do about most of the stuff going on around the world.
It looks as if we're in for some nice days for a while. Maybe I'll actually finish weedeating the paths in the woods. I got most of them done, but haven't made it out there to finish up. It's driving me nuts. It's either been too wet or too hot when I've had the time.

Jim, we do have rabbits (even though I haven't seen any lately). So it could have been a rabbit who did the deed.
As for the news, I too get tired of hearing only bad news. I love the line from "The Wiz": "Don't nobody bring me no bad news!" Here it is on YouTube:

Lyrics are by Charlie Smalls (1978):
"If we're going to be buddies
Better bone up on the rules
'Cause don't nobody bring me no bad news..."
"...If you're gonna bring me something
Bring me, something I can use
But don't you bring me no bad news..."

Today we had all kind of weather, all in one day! Sun, then rain, then sun again, then rain again. The potted flowers are being over-watered. I have to keep a good watch on the more fragile ones. I keep moving my Gerber daisy in and out of the rain and the sun. Same with the impatiens. Thank goodness for wax begonias. Nothing bothers them... except critters.
Here at Lake George we have a favorite expression: "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes! It'll change!" :)

Here's a clickable thumbnail of Romeo:

This pic was taken soon after we got him.
Here he is in his crate:

He no longer needs the crate.

Then, about 2pm, a thunderstorm rolled in. The temperature dropped to 77 in about 10 minutes! We got 1/8" of rain in about 15 minutes & the power went out. Since I have an UPS attached to the TV, we finished watching our show & then we both went out & mowed. I did the fields on the big tractor while Marg mowed the lawn on the little tractor.
The power came back on sometime before 5pm & the temperature went back up to 85 with clear, sunny skies.

We had a cloudy July 3 here but the rain was light. We gathered to eat inside a screen house on our son's deck. It was fun. Then we watched the neighbors' fireworks from our son's dock (not on Lake George). I've never seen so many fireworks which lasted so long. It was overkill. But it was fun being with the family. We celebrated Eddie's 78th birthday - oops - 79th birthday. I just can't keep up with the years!

We had fireworks all around us, none too close, though. I didn't bother watching them this year. I was too tired & just went to bed about the time they started - 10pm. Living on the very western edge of the Eastern time zone, it doesn't get dark until very late.

I never thought about the difference in time zone darkness. That's interesting. I'll bet you enjoy the long days! I hate it when the days start growing shorter.

Jim, I don't know how I missed this post. We had a spell of humid weather here last week too. It's drier this week. However, I find that, since we put up our little inflated 8 ft. diameter pool, I enjoy the hot, humid weather. It's ideal for enjoying the water. I don't get chilled as fast as I do when the air is dry.
They say that in Arizona and New Mexico, even though the temps are over 100, you might feel chilly when you come out of the pool because of the fast evaporation of the water from your skin. It was a revelation to me when I heard this.

Anyway... On today's radio weather report, I heard something similar to following:
===============================
"There's a chill [da-da-da-da]
In every month that has an r."
===============================
I couldn't find the saying online.
Has anyone knowledge of this saying?

Eddie says there's a "freeze warning" for tonight. So I'll have to take in all my potted plants. Fortunately, I gave many of them to our son to put on his porch downstate. He's just starting to take an interest in plants. So I gave him some nice adult begonia plants in full bloom. They're the easiest to care for. Hope they're still living. LOL
Right now, the sun is shining brightly and the temp is 54.

A week or so ago, I took one of my verbena flowerpots in and put it in a sunny window. It's thriving, with plenty of buds! The one I left outside wasn't doing as well so today I put that one in a sunny window too. It will be fun to watch its progress. Practically everyday their soil is dry and they need watering. Thirsty plants! And everyday, I deadhead the plants. I keep close watch on them. What a wonderful hobbby!

Hate to see my flowers die. I've already taken in my Verbena and they're doing fine. Also a Geranium which still has some pretty flowers on it. The begonias are out there struggling. Some have died back but several are still OK.

Nina, let me know if you receive a notification for this message. Perhaps there haven't been too many notifications sent out for this group lately. Things usually do slow down when the weather gets nice and people get involved in outdoor pursuits.
I had said that I wouldn't be getting flowers this year. Well, I take that back. We bought some wax begonias flats and have placed them in several pots on our deck and in our yard. We also have a couple of geraniums and three hanging impatiens. I just couldn't resist having flowers around.
My sister came to visit for 3 nights this week and she helped us do the potting of the plants. We shopped together and had a lot of fun being silly and laughing until we hurt. The town is doing curbside pickups and we stopped on the road 3 times to pick up stuff folks were discarding: a perfectly good life-preserver, a big blow-up float toy (like new), and a couple of huge clay pots as well as some wire tomato plant holders. You should have seen us trying to stuff the huge blow-up float into the back of the car. My sister took it home today to her grandson for his pool. She says she'll be back for a visit in July. I can't wait!
