Last night the 2013 Book Club got off to a great start. Attendees talked about creativity, family, responsibility, the comic book art form, World War II, and more. In case you're interested in some of the other books and films that were mentioned during the conversation, here's a list:

In Darkness a Polish film about the Holocaust
Anna Karenina Leo Tolstoy's sprawling 1870's novel about an aristocratic Russian woman
Madame Bovary Gustave Flaubert's 1856 novel about a terribly bored wife
Things Fall Apart Chinua Achebe's 1958 novel about a village leader who encounters Anglican missionaries in late-nineteench century Nigeria
A Contract with God, and Other Tenement Stories Will Eisner's collection of four stories of Jewish life in a New York tenement, now considered a classic American graphic novel
Maus: A Survivor's Tale Cartoonist Art Spiegelman's award-winning graphic novel about his father's experience as a Polish Jew during the Holocaust
James Sturm's America: God, Gold and Golems a graphic novel by an award-winning cartoonist
After the darkness: Reflections on the Holocaust a work by Elie Wiesel, who is widely known for his Holocaust memoir, Night, and for his novels and other works
American Pastoral Philip Roth's epic novel about a Jewish family in Newark amid the social upheaval of the Vietnam War era
The Plot Against America Philip Roth's 2004 novel, an alternative history, tells the story of a family in an America in which Charles Lindbergh beat FDR in the presidential election of 1940 and anti-semitism came to the fore in American culture
