Okay, I am not aiming to hate on people's favorite books/characters, but it's okay if we don't all like the same books/characters, right?

We can discuss these things cordially on the DHASG and keep things from getting personal.

The "Can an Alpha Hero be too Macho" thread had me thinking...

One hero that I can't stand, at all is Gray from After the Night. I joke that I want to hire James Diaz from Cry No More to kill him.

I can't stand JB from Heartbreaker (Long, Tall Texans) and I thought Michael from A Night to Remember was a complete sleaze.

Any heroes that you just can't stand...at all?

message 2: by Ren Puspita (new)

Ren Puspita (renpuspita) Lady D, I don't like Gray Rouillard too! Also Rome from Sarah's Child.
As for Diana Palmer, I think I will always have love-hate (mostly hate) relationship with her heroes. I mean, is she can make a likable hero?

I don't like Christian Grey. LOL, sorry for all his fans. I just don't know what appeal he had. Maybe because I had read plenty books with tortured heroes, I consider him as tame.

I think that Diana Palmer has a lot of shovel-worthy heroes, but I can usually understand their behavior. Fundamentally, they are afraid of the vulnerability of love. I know that some hate her heroes across the board though. Now, JB---I felt like beating him to death with my shovel! Horrible of me to admit.

Yeah, Rome was a jackwagon too. Thanks for reminding me!

message 4: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sandra--) I agree with Ren.. Christian Grey.. I am biased though, I didnt like the heroine (or the books) either :)

I am another who can't stand Gray from After The Night. He just rubbed me the wrong way. I liked the book itself though. I normally don't when I find a book with a jerk in it. I also didn't like Clint in Dangerous Games, Jared in Paradise Wild (I didn't like the heroine either), Douglas in The Sherbrooke Bride (there are several Coulter heroes I hate) to name a few.

message 6: by Pallavi (new)

Pallavi (threequartersthedevil) | 78 comments *silently sobbing*
I like Gray! He is sexy and possessive in all ways caveman-ish. LOL

On Christian Grey..... I most passionately agree. Pretty boy with a semi-baked sob story, direly lacking doormats (Read: Ms. Steele)

I have sooooo many. I'll be back to edit.

message 7: by Kryptonite (new)

Kryptonite (sg34) | 406 comments I didn't care for Gray either, probably not the hate you guys are feeling... but he annoyed me.

Never read SoG but from everything I heard about the story, I think I wouldn't like Christian either.

I didn't like Dominic from Dark Peril. He was too controlling and it bothered me... a lot.

Also didn't care for Zarek from Dance with the Devil. I know he went through a lot but thought he just needed to grow up and let it go.

Okay. I didn't finish this book but that's b/c I couldn't stand the hero in it. He seemed too, I don't know, sleazy to me. It's Nolan from To the Edge.

message 8: by Cherrie (new)

Cherrie (self-describedkindleaddict) | 114 comments I didn't like Luke Stark (gasp!) from the Rock Chick books. I loved all the other Hot Bunch Guys but I didn't like how Luke went after both Roxie and Jules before he ended up with Ava. It felt like he just tried it on with everyone and ended up with Ava because she said yes.

I also didn't really care for Tack from Motorcycle Man (double gasp!). I know, I know, but he just seemed a little bit.... icky to me. Eww especially that yucky room at the compound.

I have absolutely no complaints about Christian Grey though. LOVED him :-)

Oh, I totally agree about Jared, Pamela. And also Bradford from Glorious Angel. And you reminded me that Coulter does right some awful heroes. Ugh!!!!

Lhethal, I'm sorry. I don't find Gray sexy at all. But to each his own. Plenty agree with you on him, but I can't feel it for him.

So what characteristics make a hero someone you can't stand?

My main issue is how they treat the heroine and women in general. If they treat women like disposable trash, I am going to dislike them. And a high sleazy vibe drives down the hero like factor for me as well.

message 10: by Kryptonite (new)

Kryptonite (sg34) | 406 comments Cherrie, I agree with you completely about Tack. Add the goatee to that an the eww factor doubles. I really don't beards/stashes. I tried to ignore Tack's every time it was mentioned.

Lady D, what you mentioned is pretty much the main issues with me too. Also, I dislike when they're too controlling. They can be the typical alpha male but at the same time shouldn't suppress the girl.
I also don't like beard or mustache, obviously... but I try to pretend that doesn't exist when reading.

Kryptonite, I agree. I can't stand controlling heroes.

Stefanie, my dad was pretty indifferent to us, and we were raised mainly by my mother, but I think that is part of why I don't like bossy/controlling guys. Interesting we both feel that way but for different reasons.

I'm not real fond of facial hair. Vishous from the BDB is one of the main heroes with facial hair I like. I usually imagine my heroes clean-shaved.

message 12: by Cherrie (new)

Cherrie (self-describedkindleaddict) | 114 comments I haven't read After the Night but with all this talk about Gray I just added it to my "To Read" shelf. I'm hoping I like him, I'll let you all know.

( ...running for cover....) I didn't really like him either and yeah that room !?! I did end up liking him by the end of the book but the beginning....I kept wondering why people kept recommending it to me?!?

I haven't read Luke's book yet - so no comment

message 15: by Ren Puspita (last edited Jan 24, 2013 10:34PM) (new)

Ren Puspita (renpuspita) @LadyD : OMG! And I think Jordan Powell and Garon Grier are the worst!

@Lhetal : Aww, sorry for Gray ^^. My friends love him too, mostly because he have 3H (Hard, Hot and Hairy), lol!

To answer LadyD , I don't like when the hero is too controlling. Pretty much the same with mostly ladies here. I like them alpha, but no if they do something horrible to the heroine, or have abusive streak. That's why I don't like forced seduction theme. I always think that Stockholm syndrome is just an excuse, to let the sexual and mental abuse to woman and make it turn into love instead.

message 16: by Danielle The Book Huntress , Loves 'Em Lethal (new)

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 9851 comments Mod
Ren, my sister is listening to After the Night on audio. I came in her room on a sexy part, and all I could think was how I would break every bone in Gray's hand if he touched me.

I have to admit, I don't mind forced seduction. I guess it depends on the way it's written. In real life, I totally agree there is no such thing. Rape is rape. in a literary setting, I can deal with some scenarios depending on the execution. I totally respect where you are coming from and I do hate abusive heroes otherwise.

To add a different perspective: My father and mother both were very much involved in raising us. I’m fortunate to have wonderful parents. For me I think my dislike for too bossy/controlling guys stems from the fact that I’m a very independent person. And to be controlled would be going against myself. And since neither of my parents were controlling raising us, it's not something I'm used to.

I like my independence as well. I don't see why adults feel like they need to control someone in a relationship.

I think they would have to be Christian Grey and Gideon Cross. I also can't really stand Travis Maddox either. He's soooooo emotional and dysfunctional.

message 22: by Cherrie (new)

Cherrie (self-describedkindleaddict) | 114 comments Ashley - I agree with you about Gideon Cross, I can't stand him. I do love Christian though.

Sandra | 4 comments I am going to disagree on Tack. To each his own but he can have crackers in my bed.
I agree with Luke stark, and Christian gray. I was disappointed with Christian because of the build up of the book in the press and then he was more of a douche bag instead of an alpha.

Paradise Wild is one of my least favorite book of all time because both the h and H were awful people.

message 25: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4 comments Deuce from Undeniable is someone I didn't like. Skeezy. He meets her when he is 23 and she is 5. And then molests?? Her when she is 16 and he is in his 30's. Ick.

Paganalexandria | 354 comments I got two that are on everyone's favorite book boyfriend but leave me just thinking, "WTF?"

Jesse from This Man (This Man, #1) by Jodi Ellen Malpas Beneath This Man (This Man, #2) by Jodi Ellen Malpas This Man Confessed (This Man, #3) by Jodi Ellen Malpas is just so needy, his dominating just comes of as weak and insecure to me. this series is not helped by Ava being the worst heroine ever.

Tony from Consequences (Consequences, #1) by Aleatha Romig Truth (Consequences, #2) by Aleatha Romig such an unredeemable asshole in my opinion. It's not the subject matter because I don't mind Caleb from Captive in the Dark (The Dark Duet, #1) by C.J. Roberts . I kept hoping someone would kill him at some point.

message 27: by Alisa (new)

Alisa @Sandra.......oh most definitely Deuce. What a piece of misogynistic crap he was. Hated him, hated the book.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) The De La Cruz brothers from Christine Feehan's Dark series. The define the definition of alphahole.

message 29: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) Donovan Caine in Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep Web of Lies (Elemental Assassin, #2) by Jennifer Estep - holier than thou, judgemental, self-righteous prick. My blood pressure is going up just thinking about him and NOT in a good way, lol!

Goge (BARRONS) le Moning Maniac, | 288 comments Hawk from Mystery Man (Dream Man, #1) by Kristen Ashley .

Plus the heroine and a large chunk of the characters from there.

Paganalexandria | 354 comments Lisa - (Aussie Girl) wrote: "The De La Cruz brothers from Christine Feehan's Dark series. The define the definition of alphahole."

I hate the Carpathians also. I never liked how the girls really don't have much of a choice.

message 32: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (studioeastrat) | 511 comments Seth Mackey from Behind Closed Doors (McClouds & Friends #1) by Shannon McKenna . I didn't like the heroine either in this book. Seth was a GIANT goober, IMO. He was always forcing himself on the heroine instead of talking about their issues. There were times when I felt like he was almost raping her. The "bad guy" in this book was more redeemable than he was.

Also, Rydstrom Woede from Kiss of a Demon King (Immortals After Dark, #7) by Kresley Cole . While I loved this series this one was my least favorite because I could get over what a hypocritical douchenozzle Rydstrom was. He was horrible to his brother and since I LOVE Cade. I had a hard time warming up to him in this book.

Yes, Seth was definitely on the stalker side of things. I actually liked the minor villain in that book.

I see some heroes mentioned that I kind of like (Seth, Rydstrom, Carpathians) but I understand if they rub others the wrong way. I know I can think of a few heroes that everyone loves, and I'm like 'ick'. I think it depends on if I can understand their behavior and why they act that way, and if they are redeemed. I like the Carpathian men because it makes sense for them to be that way. They are very old and come from an ancient culture with antiquated rules. I think they are pretty funny, most of the time. Maybe it's because the heroines seem to do so well getting along with them. In real life, just no!

I was thinking about that recently and it is understandable. I might have liked him if I hadn't read about the adult Nick first. Or I would have started to hate him. Who knows? :)

That does make sense, I don't know that I would have liked him either.

What I really like about the YA ones is seeing more about Nick and his mom. I was really shocked in the Dark Hunter books because of that.

Yes, from what I could see from Dark Hunter books, Acheron and Nick's comments or memories, his mother would have to be a great woman.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) I don't dislike all the Carparthians, given their history I understand why they are so old fashioned and over protective of their women. The South American dudes just seemed so arrogant and unlikeable, they're the ones I really couldn't take to.

Jill I would have to say he is a character that infuriated me, if he would have done a few things differently I think the whole tone of the books would have been different. So Richard from the Anita Blake books gets my vote. I love to hate him.

He's the first 'hero' I recall at the top of my head, who has ever achieved such violent and active and persistent loathing from me.
