Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments Need opinion. I was thinking of switching to Hexed (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #2) by Kevin Hearne instead of Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter ...any opinions from fans of both series?

message 255: by [deleted user] (new)

If I had to pick one Ezi I would go with hexed I really enjoyed the first book in that series, and I've been meaning to continue on with the series at some point

@Sandra: Thanks! I was thinking about changing but now that I know this one is ok, I'm going to stick with it. So my choice is: God's War (Bel Dame Apocrypha, #1) by Kameron Hurley

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments Hexed (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #2) by Kevin Hearne

BOOK: Hexed by Kevin Hearne
Space/Color: 105/Yellow
Read: Feb 25
Rating: 3.5 stars
Review: Book 2 of this series has Atticus and Oberon riding high after the defeat of Angus Og and his witch allies. Now that Atticus has made a reputation as a god killer, everyone wants him to kill a deity for them. More importantly, a powerful entity wants to kill him by use of magic.

In addition, Malina (possible witch allie) wants his help to avenge the murder of some members of her coven. Incidentally, the murders are also trying to kill Atticus, so they have an enemy in common.
Atticus begins looking for the witches who are trying to murder him and his loved ones, with the help of the wolves, witches and a new amulet from Granuel.

I enjoyed this book a little more because I have become more comfortable with his sarcastic quips and Oberon's comedic comments. I love the relationship between man and dog. I also wonder if Atticus will get some love soon, because he needs some relationship action. This series is definitely an action packed storyline and I will continue with book 3.

Favorite Oberon Quip: She should win the Nobel Obvious

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments I'm going to have to change my choice. I reached 10% of God's War but I can't read further. This book is full of bugs!!! Honestly, they are crawling everywhere, climbing up peoples clothes etc (it seems their magic is related to them).

I'm going to try to read instead:The Last Dragonlord I hope it's yellow enough:
The Last Dragonlord (Dragonlord, #1) by Joanne Bertin The Last Dragonlord (Earthlight) by Joanne Bertin (<- alternate cover)

Here's my review for this week's spot.

Death Perception (Psychic Eye Mystery, #6) by Victoria Laurie
(Psychic Eye Mystery #6) by Victoria Laurie
Read: 26 Feb
Space/Color: 105/Yellow
Rating: 3★
Review:
In Death Perception, Abby and Dutch head to Vegas after learning that his cousin, who is like a brother to him, has been kidnapped. In the process of searching for Chase, Dutch goes missing. Abby's partner, Candice and her sister, Cat join her as she desperately tries to solve these mysteries. Having lived in Vegas, Candice has a contact for everything. With her know how and street smarts and Cat's unlimited funds, these three are unstoppable.

It was great seeing more of Candice and Cat's always a hoot. However, Abby continues to frustrate me. One minute she's "reading someone", telling them things about their lives that prove she's a powerful psychic and the next she's questioning her visions. Of course, she only questions them when it comes to Dutch and those closest to her. Maybe it's that closeness that causes her to question everything. It feels very contradictory and out of character when it happens.

These books are always a quick read about mysteries I enjoy trying to solve before all is revealed.

I'm having such trouble finding a yellow book. Do you think any of these are yellow enough? The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran What Price Paradise by Katherine Allred or Me and My Shadow (Silver Dragons, #3) by Katie MacAlister if I started it again?

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) | 2441 comments The Last Dragonlord (Dragonlord, #1) by Joanne Bertin
The Last Dragonlord by Joanne Bertin
Date finished: 01.Mar.2013.
Rating: 3 stars

The plot of The Last Dragonlord revolves around court intrigues in Kindgom of Cassori about choosing a regent to rule until young prince grows up. Since Dragonlords are "ancient Givers of Law" Linden and two of his friends come to judge who has the most rights to assume this role. Although almost everyone in this novel is plotting something, there is little tension and The Last Dragonlord, although not exactly a boring read, is also not a page-turner. I think the problem is that Joanne Bertin covered all view-points so we always know what all sides are plotting.

The romance in the book is believe it or not a love triangle. We will have Sherrine, beautiful noble lady, and Maurynna, trade-shop captain, fighting for Linden's love attention. But don't expect much tension here, because Linden tell us immediately who he is going to pick, so the whole love-triangle business is more in the head of the rejected woman than it is really happening.

The Last Dragonlord is classic fantasy, so the characters are typical and there are no real surprises what is going to happen. You know the good guys will win and that bad guys will either repent or be punished and everyone will live happily ever after. There is no deep characterization for either Linden or any other characters, they all felt rather flat to me. The only one who I liked was Shan, Liden's horse, who sadly does not appear much in the book.

What Price Paradise by Katherine Allred

Title/Author: What Price Paradise by Katherine Allred
Date finished: 2nd March
Rating: ★★★★
Review: This is the second book that I've read from this author and it probably won't be the last. For only a pound, it was a pretty good read. I read it quite quickly and there's not really much else to say about it - it kind of went as you'd expect it to go as it's a contemporary romance where two people are "forced" into marriage.

Trial by Fire (Firefighters of Station Five, #1) by Jo Davis

Trail By Fire by Jo Davis
Finished: Mar 2,13
Rating: 3.5 stars
Review:
First off I have to say that I don't read a lot of Contemporary romance, I'm more of a Sci-fi/Fantasy, Paranormal kind of girl, that being said I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Of course this is a typical romance Boy meets Girls there's a dangerous killer out to get them and all that, the sex scenes were very steamy hence the extra half star rating ;) All in all a solid first book with enough action and heat for me to continue on to the next book.

Have a great holiday, Kat! I hope you see the sun - apparently it's up there but I haven't seen it in quite a few months, for all I know it's gone out :P

Right, down to business, here's my review:

The Secret of Ella and Micha (The Secret, #1) by Jessica Sorensen

Title/Author: The Secret of Ella and Micha by Jessica Sorensen
Date finished: 4th March
Rating: ★★★★
Review: I'm sleepy so this is going to be fairly short. I liked this (as you can tell from the rating), it fulfilled my need of angsty contemporary romance. She's a good writer so I'll definitely read more of her books, as well as the next one The Forever of Ella and Micha. Erm there's not much more to say really, it's just about a girl who comes back from college and her best-friend-next-door-neighbour and their family issues.

message 295: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 05, 2013 06:09PM) (new)

OK so I ended up not reading either of the books that I picked :)

Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Date Finished: March 5,13
Rating 4.5 stars
Review: This is actually a re-read for me and I loved it just as much the second time around as I did the first. The story and the characters are well thought out and complex and I very much enjoyed Roses's snarky personality.
I'm quite excited to see what is going to take place between Rose and Dimitri in future books as this is the only book of this series that I read, I think it's high time that I finished it :)

Steph (angel4492) | 32742 comments The flights were long, but went as well as could be expected. Trying to get over my denial that we're actually here for good and not simply on holiday. :/

Hope you had/have a great holiday, Kat!

How'd your dissertation go, Josie? Been keepin' ya in my thoughts. :)

I finished my read for this week's spot.

Dead Suite (A Ghost Dusters Mystery, #4) by Wendy Roberts
BOOK: Dead Suite by Wendy Roberts
SERIES: Ghost Dusters Mystery #4
READ: 6 March
RATING: 3 stars
REVIEW:
Sadie's business, Scene2Clean - a crime scene cleaning company, is struggling. To top it off, her boyfriend and former employee, Zach left town following his stint in rehab, which has her wondering where they stand. When prostitutes are killed in two local hotels her business picks up. She's happy to help the spirits of those murdered move on, but when her friends pull her into a seance to help clean a haunted house she resists a bit.

Throughout the series, I have really liked Zach, but that changed a bit with this installment. I liked the new guy in Sadie's life and was a bit disappointed when she put on the breaks just when things were heating up. But, I understand that Zach's trying to do the right thing. Hopefully these two can patch things up or move on for good; their state of limbo is hard not only on them but also the reader.

I'm happy to see there's another installment due out later this year.

Emilie and the Hollow World by Martha Wells
Emilie and the Hollow World by Martha Wells
Date finished: 06. Mar. 2013.
Rating: 5 stars

This was another very enjoyable read by Martha Wells. I really like her writing style, her description of fantastical imaginary landscapes are always so breathtaking and she has that perfect balance between boring and scarce.

Emilie and the Hollow World is a story about a girl, Emilie, who runs away from home and then accidentally ends on a boat that is going on an expedition to the uncharted place of their world - the hollow in the middle of the planet. The comparison with Jules Verne and his Journey to the center of the Earth is inevitable and although Martha Wells's novel has the same air of adventure I found it also very original and intense. Real page turner.

And special kudos to Martha for pulling of ya novel with 0% of romance in it. So refreshing!
