X=31 though there is both the complete works and Hamlet and the chronicles of Narnia and the Lion the witch and the wardrobe so maybe 29.
+=10 mainly childhood books and ones studied at school so fond memories play a part in this.
*=19 so many great titles - I've got to get reading.
I notice whenever I do one of these lists just how many books I studied at school. We must have done 4-6 classic titles a year, plus at least 2 Shakespeare, and a long recommended reading list at A level.

14 Complete Works of Shakespeare
and
98 Hamlet - William Shakespeare
If you read the 14th, then you've read 98th, right?

What are you talking about?
"Apparently the BBC reckons most people will have only read 6 of the 100 books here." There's nothing about the US or across the pond there.
Also, no one has been able to find any trace of the BBC stating that most people will have only read 6 apart from posts that mention it on blogs and on Facebook, etc challenging people to post how many they have read (like it has been on here).
Another poster already posted the link to the only BBC article about this list that's been found.

I have read 58 of these books. Why would the BBC think people would have read so few. Mostof these are classics and many are taught in school. Others I have seen via movies and plays.

Because they didn't say it. No one has been able to find an article or any other mention of the BBC saying this. It's why it starts off: apparently.
As you pointed out it would be quite a stupid thing to say as these books are very well-known and popular. In fact the list is of books people in the UK said they couldn't live without.

X's - 44 (comes of being an avid reader plus taking comparative literature, and other literature classes)

One of the things which strikes me about the list is that there are a lot of books here which one might read at a certain time of life, i.e. as a child or a teen. If the title was not read at this time, the moment may well just be missed. Certainly, as a childless adult, I have no real interest in revisiting things written for a younger audience - although I do accept that MANY other readers feel differently.
But I do find it strange that the BBC would make such a claim.

That's great for 19!

Loved 16-- all of Jane Austen, of course! And Charlottes Web. I still, to this day, don't kill spiders because of this book.

Catcher in the Rye
A Handmaids Tale
Of Mice and Men
Read all of them in school so whether or not I liked them is irrelevant considering I was merely reading it to be done with it. Also a project came after so I can't say I enjoyed them, although I have taken some lessons from them.
