Kate was meant to be Rosalie, because of the Emmett/Elliot parallel.

And Kate ends up being Christian’s sister (in law). Rosalie and Edward are “sister” and “brother”.

Edward and Rosalie didn't always get along either. Same with Christian and Kate.

Rosalie didn't approve of Bella's lifestyle choice to become a vampire. Kate didn't approve of Ana's lifestyle choice (the BDSM) with Christian.

Noëlle Alexandria They're going over it chapter by chapter. Read it and you'll see how similar they are.

Incorrect. Authors can, and have, shut dow fanfics using their characters. See how many Game of Thrones fanfics there are.

Yeah, JK Rowlings, Diana Gabaldon are two very notable authors who have shut down fanfiction, I don't see them allowing something this blatantly copied, especially for profit.

I have a copy of the fanfiction and basically she simply change the names, gave it a cursory editing and published it as 50 shades. I only can assume she either is super flattered or simply doesn't care.

Angie Elle I could be wrong, but aren't the City of Bones books HP FF?

I looked it up and apparently The Draco Trilogy is based on Harry Potter. I believe the Mortal Instruments (City of Bones, etc) are a separate beast.

Yeah but 50 shades is not twilight. It doesn't use the same names and doesn't have the same storyline (despite the similarities). I'm not sure there are copyright laws the protect Meyer's work from this kind of injustice.

Also Meyer gave her thumbs up to fanfics. She even wrote a fanfic. This was pre-50 shades, but SMeyer hasn't broken her word and is still allowing fanfics.

Yes she can ban fanfics with the snap of her finger. But once it's not fanfic anymore... that's a different story.

There are a lot of similar elements but they're not the same story. Cassie Clare likes to reuse her old stuff, she even copies some her old fanfic lines and incorporates them into her published books.

Laura Brackin ... because they were both horribly written.

Frances Having read some of your comments, I loved the Fifty Shades Trilogy, but have never tried the Twighlight series. Should I now read those?

message 64: by Prim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Prim I haven't read Twilight, but I have no idea why people bother to compare it to Twilight. Christian Grey is not even a vampire. Lol.

I fully agree with you Angie :-)

Frances I think it is more to do with the characters dark side.

I also agree with Sarah, and with what Angie wrote. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes and opinions and nobody should be ridiculed for that. After all, it would be a boring old world if we all liked the same things!

Nickisha ummm.. Good question... cause Twilight is about vampires that sparkle and well we all know what fifty shades is about.

Theresa Hey guys. It's not that they compare it to Twilight. But that originally Fifty was known as Master of the Universe as a fan fiction with Bella and Edward playing the main parts. The Twilight fans were the ones who gave it a start or it probabyl wuold have never gotten published. That waht J
ames has to change the chars names and some of the details to avoid publishing rights.

It began as a Twilight fan fiction. Honestly, you can easily spot who's who in comparison to Twilight and it is glaringly obvious. It's like a much more adult take. I've read the whole series of both sets of books and was honestly appalled at some of the things E.L. James was allowed to get away with in terms of similarities. But there are a bunch of differences (some subtle, some not so much) that distance this from Twilight enough to make it worth reading.
