Foxtower | 38 comments I hate to bug you wonderful librarians again so soon....

Anyway, I'm trying to enter a SET of 12 (out of 25) books titled "The Great Artists: A Library of Their Lives, Times and Paintings: (Artists name ie Renoir)".

EVERY book from the SET has the same ISBN = 0834300060

Yet, the book above; "PP by PP" has the SAME ISBN 0834300060. On Amazon both the set and pp come up.. though Abe books lists the number as part of the SET.

Now what do I do?

First, how do I enter 12 books with the same ISBN.. I can't find anything in the Librarians Manual for Sets.

Second, are their indeed duplicate ISBN numbers when one is a book (pp by pp) and one is a Set?

Your wisdom and guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Were they sold as a single unit, or was each volume sold individually?

Foxtower | 38 comments Hi Rivka!

I don't know about 1978.. none are marked with prices, but the entire numbered set is listed on the back of each book.. most likely marketing to get people to buy the whole set.

Today they are sold individually on Abebooks and Amazon. (I didn't get mine individually... if I remember right I found the box of them in a dump somewhere.. though my mind gets fuzzy with age...)

I realize it's hard to know when they are that old. But with a single ISBN, I would suspect they were originally sold as a single set -- which would mean they get one listing on GR, as the set.

Foxtower | 38 comments Hey again Rivka!

Ok, I guess I can take a photo of the set and fudge a description, but how do I resolve the conflict with the Picasso duplicate ISBN?

vicki_girl | 2764 comments In this case I think the entry in GR needs to be updated, and there's actually no duplicate. According to the log for that edition, ingram changed the title from 'Pablo Picasso (The Great artists ; book 6)' to 'Pablo Picasso'. So at some point someone (not necessarily on GR; could have come from an import) added the book using the ISBN, without knowing that all the other books also had the same ISBN.

I would separate ISBN 0834300060 from the other books it's currently combined with and change the title to something like "The Great Artists: A Library of Their Lives, Times and Paintings, Vol I-XII".

Lobstergirl Yep....here's the Worldcat "entry" - actually 30 different entries.

Lobstergirl And the description should list every separate title and its author(s).

Foxtower | 38 comments Thank you all!!! I will proceed as suggested.

It's such a wonderful set of books with huge color plates! Well worth sharing!

Thanks again.. I'm off until next time....
