Anusha Iyer Hey guys,

I was hoping for some insight and advice from bloggers out there (it doesn't matter how long you have been blogging, I just want your opinion).

Here is my link: The Golden Pot of Books

I'm considering moving my blog to wordpress because of a bunch of reasons. I think wordpress offers a larger variety of things I can do with my blog and helps me get ads/promote my site more. I wouldn't say I'm terribly unhappy with Weebly...its kind of the opposite. It was an easy set up and super quick to learn, and voila I had viewers and people reading in less than a week. I definitely like it a lot, its just some things are limited on weebly because its so easy to operate I think.

But anywho, I was wondering if there were people who have experience with Wordpress, switching (in general) to a another host, weebly, etc. If you have any advice...you whether I should stay or go?...I would really appreciate it.

Thanks guys!
Snuggles with Rainbows.

Steve Smy (steveksmy) | 7 comments I'm afraid I can't advise on transferring your blog data to WordPress but I can say that WordPress is superb - the best, in my opinion. I don't think you would regret making the move. There are two options, though. You can simply start a blog on WordPress.com or you can self-host it using the same software from WordPress.org. The first places a few limitations on what you can include but remains vastly superior to other offerings. The second is governed entirely by you but you do need your own web host.

If you make the transition - I would suggest posting a closing post on Weebly, giving the link to the new blog.

Cheers,
Steve

Anusha Iyer Many thanks to you reply Steve. Yes I was going to put up a closing statement and my links when I have the other site fully functioning.

I think I'm getting a bit frustrated with the lack of flexibility with weebly enough to definitely move to wordpress once and for all. Now the question is can I handle the steep learning curve at wordpress lol

Ravenous Biblioworm | 26 comments wordpress has a great community help forum. I am assuming you are doing self host for a lift on restrictions?? Here is a link on how to move from blogger to wordpress.org account...

I know you have weebly, but I figured it'd be similar and it's somewhere to start.

The gal Beautiful Invisible wrote a 3 part directions on how to transfer. I think she explains it well as I have saved and bookmarked her page and did exactly as she said and it worked. Here's a link to her page: link

I think you'll find that WordPress is worth the effort ;) And the learning curve isn't as bad as you might think :)

Ravenous Biblioworm | 26 comments How do you plan to use your blog? I assume it'd be mostly about books? Keep in mind, about column support.... the one you have chosen seems to have only one and that is specifically for your blog posts. Do you plan to do banners? Show pictures on books you are currently reading?

Just to let you know right now... what you are using is a wordpressDOTcom platform... it is restrictive, very restrictive for many book bloggers, since they like using javascripts... if you can live without javascript you can do well on wordpressDOTcom...

Right now as it stands, it looks good. I just don't know what you plan or want to do to better help you to give suggestions.

message 15: by Anusha (new)

Anusha Iyer Thanks Ravenous.

Honestly I'm too computer stupid to know how to use javascript lol. If this site starts to be super popular, I will end up buying my own domain [i believe that's the right term]. But as for what I intend to do with it, its just a fun hobbie right now where I vent about book I read and post pics from my travels/everyday stuff. It will be getting a new background and banner pic every week and those pics will be added to 'Background Photos'

but other than that that's all I plan...it just depend on my viewers and hits for me to go buy it or get adds and things lol. But I do love all the widgets at wp soo much fun!

message 16: by Ravenous (new)

Ravenous Biblioworm | 26 comments Well, if you plan to buy your own domain, your choice in wordpressDOTcom is a good one because the transition over to a wordpressDOTorg account is super easy.

The layout you are using right now is ideal for photography so if that's your plan, which according to what you have said so far, it can be fitted that way, it will work well. Your current layout is just missing side bar columns to post other random stuff... if you want those side columns for other displays, I would go with another layout.

It took me hours to decide on the right layout for me... even when thought I had the right one for a few days I ended up changing it to the one I have now. (But I think this is part of the fun... some people think it's punishment... ha).

Ravenous Biblioworm | 26 comments I was looking through your blog again...

it needs a subscribe via email widget and maybe you can sign up for a linky account so other people without wordpress can follow your blog. You want to make it as easy as possible for people to follow you by allowing a multitude of ways to do it.

message 18: by Anusha (new)

Anusha Iyer Aww thanks,

So true. I completely agree with having more widgets to follow me by and am working on that. I added a twitter one and soon i hope to have a fb going. The email widget I'm working on because i don't see one of wp so its a bit annoying.

message 19: by Ravenous (new)

Ravenous Biblioworm | 26 comments Under widget option, where it has all the boxes of selection, the follow by email one is titled,"Follow Blog"

message 20: by Anusha (new)

Anusha Iyer hey guys,

Quick questions...since I can't figure this out for the life of me. I want to start a couple of memes but can't/don't know how to have a button with its grab text on wordpress. I don't know how to code it. I googled it and none of the codings work for me since wordpress doesn't like textboxes? thoughts?

message 21: by Ravenous (new)

Ravenous Biblioworm | 26 comments Are you trying to create a grab button? And post it into the post or post as a widget?

message 22: by Anusha (new)

Anusha Iyer well i have the button ... its the grabing part thats an issue. and as a widget rather than into a post.

message 23: by Ravenous (new)

Ravenous Biblioworm | 26 comments Use this generator... it's the one I used before and it works:

http://www.mycoolrealm.com/sandbox/gb...

Then use a text widget and paste the code into the text area. And place the "grab button"-widget into the sidebar area.

message 24: by Anusha (new)

Anusha Iyer Thanks so so much Ravenous! I'll def. try it out
