Yay for the Mortal Instrument series, I think it's better than Twilight.

Another popular one is the Rachel Morgan Series but it's a tad more adult than YA.

Oh my god Mortal Instrument is great. Picture a secret society developed to protect the planet from Demon and Demon spawns with Human/Angel Hybrids.
About a girl who gets drawn into this world, the fallout from a megalomaniac in the past who tried to pull "The Ultimate Race" card instead of the dutiful protector of all humanity.
Great character development, plot twists, littered with clues, romantic triangles, secrets slowly revealed about the different characters.
Sometimes, the bad guy is so charming you can't help but agree...
And of course Jace is a cocky bad boy while Edward is a pretty boy Emo.
Clary is strong willed compared to Bella who is frantically led by her emotions and her whole identity revolves around her love/obsession for Edward.

Rachel Morgan Series is a little more...drama than fast pace action. The world's population was decimated by bioengineering, and the mystical world comes out of the closet and sets up their own world, side by side.
Rachel Morgan is a witch working for the mystical FBI, dealing with a temporary Vampire and Pixie partners, bad luck with men, messed up childhood coming back to haunt her, and on the fast track to hell in a hand basket.

One of my favorite technique this author used is beginning each book with a "here's her life now, normal every day", ending it with a "looking back at what's changed", and she'd take bits of seemingly everyday occurrences from older books and that becomes a driving force in the next book.

Similar to what Rowling did with Potter though she started each book with a view into Voldemort.

Character growth, Rachel's a stubborn, bratty, and cocky agent, with a taste for danger. So she grows for better or worse with each book, character flaws, enlightenment into her own personality, developing personal goals.

You spend a lot of time in her head, what she's thinking, why she's doing what she's doing, good or bad decisions, and of course kicking ass.

I think it can work out good, the crash with a fade away scene as Lissa is over Rose's body. The apartment before they escape and having a tall athletic Russian come out of the shadow on the streets. They model the school life after the Potter movies. Focus the action scenes with Rose's training, plenty of steamy scenes, and of course the last 45 minutes would be hot, steamy, and action packed. Unfortunately it'd probably need to be a good 3 hour movie. By the time they do Shadowkissed, they'd have the skim over parts of the cliche school fighting.

message 473: by *Michelle* (new)

*Michelle* (silversecret16) | 656 comments I think that it would be a really bad movie cause they would skip a lot of parts.

message 474: by Luna (new)

Luna | 635 comments ya, theres so much theyd have to cover, they would probly cut down a meeting or two between Rose and Mia or something

message 475: by April (new)

April Kennedy (MidnightDreams) | 356 comments yeah like they did in twilight took so much out :{

Yeah I get all kinds of nicknames.
I was referring more to the "where is" part

message 480: by Rara (new)

Rara ooo that part

message 481: by April (new)

April Kennedy (MidnightDreams) | 356 comments yeah thay added stuff are you wanting things added or where u just saying they added things

message 482: by Arekusu (new)

Arekusu | 210 comments Mod
I was just saying they added stuff, I heard the major scenes of the movies before reading the book and was confused when there were parts missing. You have any idea what that does to a neurotic bookworm?

message 483: by Rara (new)

Rara what?

message 484: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 399 comments they would have 2 cut a lot of scenes if they made VA into a movie. and if they make SK into a movie, they r gonna have 2 cut some of the stuff @ the royal court and some mason sightings....

message 485: by *Michelle* (new)

*Michelle* (silversecret16) | 656 comments how would they do and show mason?

message 486: by Arekusu (new)

Arekusu | 210 comments Mod
What's wrong with Mason? A non-speaking spirit guide, than looms around like anguished souls.

And the royal court, sounds easy enough.

If magic was involved, it'd make me think of Harry Potter, or maybe Dungeons and Dragon.

The Glass City from Mortal Instruments sounds much more elaborate.

And the Twisted Citadel from The Darkglass Mountain rises from one of the largest mountains in the world, glowing in the darkness like an apparition, it's walls like crystal, gleaming, reflecting the strength of Elcho Falling.

message 487: by Alejandra (new)

Alejandra (alejandraporras) Well i guess then they shouldn't make a movie because then they would ruin the whole book.

message 488: by April (new)

April Kennedy (MidnightDreams) | 356 comments pretty mush every movie they make and will make will and has ruined a book

message 489: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Ruiz (vampireprincess1991) | 422 comments i know and everything is important they can't skip anything or it be confusing

message 490: by April (new)

April Kennedy (MidnightDreams) | 356 comments yeah and horrible to everyone who has read it

message 491: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Ruiz (vampireprincess1991) | 422 comments yes cuz they need to understand the story not drool over the characters

cuz thats what i do with twlight i don't understand i just think she's horny for him but idc i just stare at Taylor...

It depends on how you look at it.

A book can be a journal into someone's thoughts, following them like a ghost as they go about their adventure. It allows us to feel what the characters are feeling, their joy, their sorrow, surprise, anger, rage, frustration, impotence, determination, love, hate.

Some books walk you through a world like a poet, who paints every minutia in colorful exaggeration, wow you with vocabulary, impress you with vivid images.

Then there are books that lay out like a history book, throwing major events past you to give you a scope of a larger epic.

Hollywood Movies can't do that effectively, they are constrained by time and pander to the lowest denominator of society, that has low attention span, desire sex, blood, and gore, cheesy romance, and cliche so they don't have to think.

If you view books as a storyteller that lets you live another life; but movies, movies are your imagination brought to screen. When you read, you read what happens, you imagine how it happened, how everyone looks. The movies are there to show you how it happened, how everyone looks.

If you accept movies as merely a visual wow, instead of trying to convey a story in 1.5 hours to 3 hours, you won't be as disappointed.

Now you can watch a movie first, get the images in your mind, don't focus too much on the story, and then read the book, to get a more complete view of the world of what happened and be able to create the images more firmly in your mind.

Or you can read the book first, live out their lives, and use the movie as an enhancement, like reminiscing on what once was. Personally I like a few guide pictures with my book.
