Hi CC, nice to meet you, i do my own covers and i am always looking for other commissions. I would charge very little ($20-$30) and can create a design to suit your genre and needs. Please check out my website www.darrenworrow.webs.com - where there is also a selection of links to other artists that are willing to accept book cover commissions too!

Hope this helps.

David Burton (goodreadscomdcburtonjr) | 21 comments I just posted a new post in my What If? blog - "Repent, Harliquin!" Feel free to check it out at http://davidburtonwriting.wordpress.com

I hope to publish a new novella, Young Blood, on Amazon in a day or two. It's the third in my An Accidental Vampire series of stories. I think I'm going to put it on KDP Select first and see how it goes. I'll let you know when the free days will be.

message 105: by Richelle (new)

Richelle Goodrich (richelleegoodrich) Ok, this may sound like a dumb question, but, how exactly do you get a book published on Amazon? E-book? Paperback? Cost? I'd like instructions, please. Speak to me like a child. I can take it. : )

Start here: http://kdp.amazon.com

it is pretty much self explanatory. but if you need assistance send me a message and I will help. If your books are on other sites you won't want to do KDP Select cause you have to give amazon exclusivity. but you can still publish there even if you don't go select.

message 107: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) Same here Rachele. It's easy. You'll need a cover, but other than that, just follow the directions. It's step-by-step.

message 108: by Richelle (new)

Richelle Goodrich (richelleegoodrich) Okay, thank you very, very much! I'm going to try this with one of my shorter books. But first, another dumb question.... Is a copyright on your book necessary to publish it as an e-book? And if so, do you have to wait for the copyright to be approved, or can you move ahead once you apply for one?

message 109: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Fraser (stephen_b_fraser) | 13 comments Richelle wrote: "Is a copyright on your book necessary to publish it as an e-book? And if so, do you have to wait for the copyright to be approved, or can you move ahead once you apply for one?"

You can move forward with it once you apply for one. However you do not need to apply for one. Legally Your work is copy righted the moment you place the copyright symbol on your work. that is why almost every author puts "Copyright © 2012 Author Name or Publishing company name" that is a legal and binding copyright.

message 110: by Richelle (new)

Richelle Goodrich (richelleegoodrich) Wow! Thanks, Stephen, I did not know that about copyrights. So, what exactly would be the plus of paying money to apply for a copyright through the library of congress?

I'm sure glad that you guys are so wise and willing to share your know-how. I've been reading the kdp.amazon.com info. Thanks for sharing that link. I think once I do this for myself, the next time will be a piece of cake, right? I paid someone else to do all this for my first book, not realizing it was within my power. This is good news!

message 111: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Fraser (stephen_b_fraser) | 13 comments Ok Keep in mind I am not a copyright attorney. Copyright is secured automatically when the work is created, and a work is “created” when it is fixed in a copy for the first time.

In general, copyright registration is a legal formality intended to make a public record of the basic facts of a particular copyright. However, registration is not a condition of copyright
protection. So by paying for a copyright registration you are just making it Public record. There are some benefits to doing this, but most relate to advantages to bringing a infringement suit against another party. Since you have to register your copyright before you can sue for infringement. However if your work is dated then that becomes the official date of copyright no matter when you register it.

So if you write a book and copyright it in 2012 and then publish and sell it in 2012 then it is considered copyrighted 2012 even if you don't register it till say 2020.

The only time you might register something is if say you write 60% of a book but can't finish it due to any one of a hundred different reasons. You can register it as an unpublished work and protect it from say another author stealing it and finishing it and copyrighting it as their own work.

This is a good source to read if you are having trouble sleeping...
http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ01...

message 112: by Richelle (new)

Richelle Goodrich (richelleegoodrich) Thanks for all the info, Stephen. So far I've registered all my works for copyright. It doesn't cost that much, so why not? But it usually takes FOREVER! So I wondered if it was necessary.

Darren Worrow (darrenworrow) | 26 comments in the uk you send copies to the agent for copyright, 100 euston rd, london and also to the british library this ensures your publucation is filed should an issue of copyright occur. i dont know if there is something similar for ebooks. however provided you have stated in the book that it is copyrighted and dated the work then it should be sufficant. paying for a copyright is not needed.

message 114: by Anna (new)

Anna Walls (annalwalls) I use MyFreeCopyright - they allow you to register blogs and websites. You can also register a document on your computer and they give you a copyright number. I've done that with my latest book and posted that number in the book.

That's so cool! It's much better than reading from the tiny screen of your phone. (My phone has a very tiny screen of low quality, so I should know... it hurts my eyes. XD)

By the way, tomorrow is February 14th which is Valentine's day! Two of my kindle e-books will be available for free downloading then for the entire day:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BBNB3EW/ (The Fire of Mars) >> A fantasy epic set in Ancient Rome.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009B4OAJ8/ (Letters to an Imaginary Friend) >> Poetry, epistolary novella. A collection of poems in the form of diary entries and letters that the characters of the story write to each other.

If anyone here wants to, they can get these two for free! Reviews are very much appreciated! :-D

My first try at a historical vampire mystery novella, Young Blood, is now available for the Kindle. I'm trying KDP Select, so you can borrow it anytime for free if you're a member of Prime.
I'd appreciate a Like or a critique of the book description. I've always struggled with those.

I have something like that. I got mine free from BookSmart and it's really kinda fun to play with. You kinda need to write your book on it (of course I'm talking about mine, not this one so things might be different) I copied and pasted a manuscript on mine and it worked but then it was a whole lot of work putting the chapter heading pages in and then I simply couldn't get some of the text to stay within the margins. Maybe it wouldn't have made any difference but when I published through CreateSpace, the need for it became rather irrelevant.

Just remember the guidelines. KPD select (unless I'm thinking of the wrong thing) demands exclusivity and I have a lot of friends with a nook.

message 127: by David (new)

David Burton (goodreadscomdcburtonjr) | 21 comments I don't have time to get Young Blood out to Smashwords, B&N, etc. right now, so that's why I put it on KDP select.

If you can make Createspace work then no need to bother with the other. I couldn't get it to work right for me - of course I was running Vista and Word Works which were increasingly noncompatible with most everything. That's one reason I got a new computer. I'm hoping it will be a bit more compatible.

If your friends have Nooks, send them to B&N (am I allowed to say that?) to read An Accidental Vampire and New Blood, the first two stories in the series.

Darren Worrow (darrenworrow) | 26 comments You can use amazon's KDP but you don't have to use the select option. Mine now run on amazon but i opted out of the select part, using www.easyepublish.com to distribute on the others, itunes, kobo, B&N and Sony.

I have only just started this so i wonder how well it will go, i mean does anyone use these sites and have nooks and kobo ereaders? Let me know if you do and i will reply with some links to my "work!"

Writing, editing, designing covers, blogging....oh yeah, and those pesky jobs and home responsibilities we're expected to attend to! Life's a little busy, yes. ; )

Anyhow, I have to say thanks to everyone for sharing so much helpful publishing/advertising info. It's been an education to me. Like this link shared by David - 20 places to promote your book for free - http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/. A good thing to take advantage of!

I'm about ready to try my hand at putting an e-book up on Amazon, (all by myself),but I might go through this easyepublish.com mentioned by Darren instead of Amazon's KDP. It seems to offer a wider range of availability to readers. (If this doesn't work, I know who to gripe at, Darren.)

I love seeing the books advertised here that are getting out there to be read! It's amazing how many talented people there are.

To let you know, I posted on my author blog an interesting article about one of us. Check it out! http://regoodrichnews.blogspot.com/
I'd love to do other write-ups on anyone interested. Just let me know! Keep up the writing, and sharing what's working for you.

I've bought the book. It does sound interesting, though I'm not all that interested in vampire stories. I will read it though, one of these days. At the moment I'm loading up my new kindle, so it may take a while.

You wanted some feedback on the blurb. The long French names were difficult and made reading that equally difficult. You made connections that weren't immediately clear. You might want to include who persuaded her to start this investigation and why. Just a thought, and I'd recommend keeping the names short; you do that in one instance and I had to go back and figure out who that was. Just my recommendation, for this blurb only use the single, commonly used name. The occasional Duke or Duchess attached to it is enough to note title. Keep it simple.
