Dorothy Gilman is very special to me. I read / collect real books only (the physical ones). Two of the longest searches it has ever taken me, were rare ones of hers. How do you like her?I keep saying, it would be great to leave a symbol or note (rather than when one finishes a book) about how much they like them. I have Lorraine Bartlett, Avery Aames, Susan Wittig Albert in my queue too. Some people leave review links but I'm sensitive about spoilers before I've read it myself.
I really enjoyed the book!!!! Her writing is a little different than I am used too. I really enjoyed the plot and the characters. I absoultely fell in love with Mrs. Pollifax. She reminds me of my grandmother, nothing ever seemed to slow her down!!!!!
My other question is above too - asking about the other three authors. People often give a finishing date but not a thumb's up or done. LOLI'm so glad you love Dorothy Gilman, who we just lost in February 2012. Fans were even welcomed to her funeral in New York, USA. The series started in 1966 but that isn't necessarily what clues you in to 'different writing'. I grew up with gothic mystery greats and although she leaned more towards personal adventures; she fit in with the group I was reading of those wonderful gothic mystery eras.
Are you ready for this? She's most famous for her Mrs. Pollifax series, which I've collected and you have begun. But I haven't touched it yet! For some crazy reason I approached Dorothy by starting with her standalone books instead! And they are phenomenal. http://cmriedel.wordpress.com/2012/04...
C, if you want to check out my thread for this challenge, you're welcome to do so. I don't write reviews, but I give star ratings for each book. Barb's 2013 Cozies
My mom introduced me to Mrs. Pollifax years ago, and I loved all of her books, but haven't read any of Gilman's stand alones.
Very nice to add your voice and acquaintance, Barb. Since this genre squeezes in so much material, whether or not I always believe some ought to be called 'cozies'; we are all bound to have much in common.My theory with Mrs. Pollifax (and I do hope my Dorothy Gilman blog article has the pleasure of visitors) is that it must be the best of the best. Therefore I started with her skews off that path and thought: if I adore them, I might very well be thunderstruck by the series when I at last savour it! Carolyn.
Sorry to hi-jack your thread, Christina!Yes, we all have different opinions as to what constitutes a "cozy," but I think there's a lot of common ground too.
Lorraine Bartlett book I gave 5 stars to. I have read others under the name Lorna Barrett by her that I liked. Avery Aames that was the first book I had read by this author and I gave it 4stars. I am currently reading the second book in that series and like it so far. Susan Wittig Albert-I have liked every one that I have read. The last one Hangmans Root I gave 5stars. I give sstars when I finish read and give my review of the book. You can go into my BOOKS READ shelf and see if you would like!!!!
I wondered if you knew we lost Dorothy Gilman, February 2012. Isn't it cool that fans were welcomed to her funeral in New York, USA? It is an intriguing discussion that you find her writing different - and that must be a good thing! The series started in 1966 but that isn't necessarily why. I grew up with gothic mystery greats, which makes me used to the lingo. She leaned towards personal adventures but fit with the group I was reading, of those wonderful gothic eras.I also wonder if you found this amusing. She's most famous for Mrs. Pollifax but I haven't touched it! For some crazy reason I approached Dorothy, starting with her segues! They are phenomenal. I worte an article that I hope folks like. http://cmriedel.wordpress.com/2012/04...
Thank you! If you commented at WordPress, I thank you for that. :) (I'm not among those with dozens of daily hits). I do sumersaults for every comment! Good luck finding her two rarest gems. It took YEARS for each ('very good' / 'like new' shape, at low prices).Her fantasy, "The Maze In The Heart Of A Castle" (1983) is awesome and should be a film. Her autobiography, I just acquired last month!!!! It's about moving to Nova Scotia (a gorgeous province) after divorce: "A New Kind Of Country", 1978. http://www.amazon.ca/review/R3DLMS1RM...

I keep bugging the lovely Christina that it would be more interesting to see 5/5 ratings next to her lists, than read dates. Same to other people using that style. Dates read are sort of a given. ;) Then without digging around in reviews, people can show us at a glance where all the GREAT books are. Heeheehee!
C. wrote: "Dates read are sort of a given. ;) "Not really. A lot of a people post their reading lists ahead of time, then go back and add the date completed later, when they've actually read the book/s.
Busted! ;) It was a nicer way to say, dates don't tell me anything. LOL When people leave their opinion of all these great lists - can't get enough of that. :-) {I only post what I read. If others pre-plan, awesome.}
C. wrote: "{I only post what I read. If others pre-plan, awesome.}"I'm the same way :) Although I do admire those who are able to plan ahead -- and stick to the plan! LOL
Barb-Still have to read all of them. It just seems that I don't get time to list as I go!!!! Hopefully next time I 'm able to list a done date I can also pit how many stars I feel each book should get.
Yes! Because this is a genre where we're after so many authors in common, we wanna know (without digging into websites) what our peers think, if they finish first. Christina has so much great stuff. I was happy to notice a few of mine wind up on her 'To-be-read'. :)Barb, here here! Whether it's a pre-plan or finishing list, posting one at a time is distracting. I prefer to sit down in bulk too. Great titles on your list too and you put so much WORK into it. So do I - which is why I haven't staked my new mountain yet. LOL I'm in end-of-month review-linking! The ones with prizes. {wink}
