Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14527 comments To me it depends a lot on the story. If it is meant to be erotica then yes, I expect gobs of sex.

For mainstream romance books I like to have at least 2 really good sex scenes but it depends on the story. If its thrown in there because the author had to fill a half dozen pages with something then it probably won't work for me. It has to feel natural. I read a book once where the heroine's car got blown up and then she turns around and has sex with the hero. What? I'd be freaking out and calling law enforcement or something.

I've read some great books that had no sex in them at all and didn't feel like I missed anything. I guess I'm saying it needs to work with the story and be somewhat believable.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Totally agree with you, Pamela. I remember once reading a book where the H/h found a dead body in the seat/cabinet (not sure what it is called...you know, the kind that has a lid that lifts up) in a gazebo. Anywayz...later...after a quite a few pages, but still the same setting, they sat down and started making out. Ewwww! I didn't care how hot it got. Gag me. Bad editing.

Darlene Deluca (darlenedeluca) | 488 comments I want a good read -- an interesting storyline, compelling characters and some kind of dilemma. If sex fits into the story, that's fine. It doesn't have to be graphic, though, just natural, and it has to make sense. Some sex scenes are just silly and contrived.

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments Yeah, the sex has to have a reason. I don't care how much is in it, from closed doors to naked bodies on every page, but it can't be sex for the sake of sex.

message 5: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I agree with these ladies, unless your writing straight erotica then the sex needs to work with the story not just put in there to have a sex scene. To much sex and not enough story means I'm just going to start flipping pages and not reading them anyway.

message 6: by Sandra (new) - added it

Sandra For me, I like sex scenes, but if it goes on too long I'm reading the dialogue and flipping the pages.

Don't need to know every little thing cause then I start imaging it and all the faults become glaringly obvious, "how the heck did his leg get there???" it just pulls you right out of the story.

**hee hee**

Yes, I remember years ago, I went on a binge of reading all the books written by one author - in a row. Big Mistake. I discovered all her sex scenes were almost identical...and long. First time I ever started flipping through the pages.

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments I used to read an author but stopped when every. Single. One. Of her heroines got kidnapped to be sex slaves. Oy!

Sunny☼ (sunny2) | 643 comments I was just reading A Lora Leigh book. The sex scenes were appropriately placed. They did add to the story. The plot line was not diminished because of it, BUT each of the sex scenes went on for 7 or 8 pages. By the last one it was ..yada yada yada get on with the story. They were well written, stimulating just too darn much.... Was that me who just said that?

I wonder if we're talking about the same author? I simply gave up on her. It was just too much.

Could be. Are her initials SL?

message 12: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (chibilee02) I agree with the others, if it's natural and fits seamlessly into the story then I don't mind some sex here and there. If the book is erotica then don't be surprised to find a lot of sex.

However, I take a lot of consideration on how those sex scenes are written. Some are so explicit and gratuitous, that I felt it was put in for shock value or whatnot.

There are also other books that have sex scenes, but are written so well that they're not explicit and still conveys the sensuality and sexiness of the scene. But that's just me...lol

Yes, if the writer has me involved in the characters, I find the sex scenes are hotter and have more chemistry, doesn't matter about how explicit they are. Gotta have chemistry.
