I have 2 questions:

1) is there a difference between an ebook and Kindle edition? If so, what is it and should they be separate/combined?

2) why do some editions of books have different descriptions and covers? This confuses me greatly -- are these the kind of things I should ask librarians to change?

1) They are defined as different editions Kindle with ASIN and ebook with ISBN.

They should be combined

2) Books get published with different covers all the time (re leased with a better cover, different covers for UK and US publications) and descriptions can very dependent on publisher and extras that may exist in different editions.

Only ask for them to be changed if you know an edition was never published with a particular (which is difficult to prove as just because a book cannot be found on the internet or publishers site with a cover, does not mean it was never published with the cover)

Descriptions are easier - if there are sales, links, reviews in the description then ask for these to removed as they are against GR policy or if you find a better description

1) A Kindle edition is a type of ebook edition which is usually considered a separate edition (because Kindle editions usually have ASINs instead of ISBNs as their id numbers).

Very often when a book is published as an ebook there will be two editions listed here: an ebook with an ISBN and a Kindle with an ASIN. As with any other editions in different formats, the editions should be combined: that is, they should be listed as editions of the same book, with each edition having its own page which shows the other editions in the "other editions" side box.

If the book is published only in Kindle format, there shouldn't be an ebook edition, just a Kindle edition.

2) Often books are republished with different covers -- sometimes even different titles! The description of the book can vary from edition to edition as different aspects of the book are emphasized.

Sometimes you'll see editions of two actually different books combined as if they were editions of the same book. This does happen by accident sometimes. If you think this has happened, you can always ask a librarian to check into it! There's no harm in asking.
