Noah Sturdevant (noahksturdevant) | 173 comments I spent the last month devouring the audio and video podcast, and I found that things have been consistently good. I don't understand what people think is missing. I just see the podcast trying new things from time to time, which is good.

I agree with the fact that trying new things is a good thing. But I was happy to notice in the latest podcast that they are talking a bit more about the book of the month, without referring all the time to the video podcast. I watch both, but most of the time I go to the radio one first since I can listen to it, while working at the lab.

message 103: by Rick (new)

Rick Mr Noah,

If you had listed to the podcasts before the Youtube show it might appear differently. Then, all book discussion was (of course), in the podcast. The introduction of the Youtube show moved the kickoff and wrapup to that show... but over time it also meant less discussion about the book on the podcast and, frankly, I stopped listening since podcasts aren't the way I like to keep up on news. Since the feedback above it seems that the podcast has more book talk which is good.

I do get the balancing act T&V have between the two shows but, selfishly, I don't really care if they end up repeating things from the video show. That's probably boring for them, but since I don't watch the video show, it's not repeat material to me.

message 104: by Rick (new)

Rick Dammit! Now you all have me watching the video show...

message 105: by Jim (new)

Jim (kskryptonian) | 202 comments Tom, is it possible to treat the audio as more of a Spoiler Zone, and therefore give everybody the more in depth book discussion they are requiring?

Also, I'd listen to you and Veronica read a phone book, to be honest, so just keep doing what yer doing.

I keep forgetting about the podcasts because I don't receive a message. My fault not checking I know, but I do have memory issues.

I have subscribed btw

The RSS feed will tell when a new podcast is available. That's how I know.

https://ifttt.com is a great way to have an email generated every time a feed is update.

Our feeds are all collected in a page called 'subscribe'

http://swordandlaser.com/subscribe/

We also have taken to putting the subscribe link into the bottom of every audio podcast post.

Paul | 100 comments Done!
Thanks Tom, I missed the RSS feed option when I subscribed before as I never have used it.
Thanks Rob (you are a pal) knew what to look for this time. Now it is on my homepage so no excuses to miss the podcasts ever again! YAAAY!

Cool! And seriously check out IFTTT. It's dead simple to use and you can make it send you an email whenever the RSS feed updates. You may not need that anymore, but kinda nifty.

Tamahome | 7222 comments It's tweeted by @veronica or @swordandlaser as well.

Paul | 100 comments Wow pat on my back for persistence!
Thanks Tom, should now also get emails to say there is a podcast available.

Took a bit of time figuring out how to set up the recipe but got there in the end. Should be simple but I couldn't find the RSS URL and then wrote things in the wrong places. Oh Dear there is no hope.
If I knew what a dropbox was I could do that too! lol

This is going to be great for nights like tonight when I cannot sleep and when opera is on the radio.

Tom and Veronica vs Rossini.
NO CONTEST! lol

Thanks Tamahone, don't really do tweets. This episode has shown how far behind in the world of internet comms I have fallen

I did explain that I have problems just checking the site. ie Will forget. One of the problems caused by M.E. It is really helpful to me to get an email that I can act on and having the news feed on my Google homepage is a reminder to go to the podcast is also useful.

+1 for the sports bar. Always nice places to visit.

Sea | 4 comments I've been a lurker for quite a while, just didn't have anything to say, but I've listen to the podcast for at least 3 years and the youtube show since the beginning. (And yes I always download and marked the youtube video "like").

My only suggestion is it would be great if you could get the author on during the wrap up episode to have them in on the discussion and answer questions.

Robert Osborne (ensorceled) | 84 comments Ouch. I switched to Downcast because the latest Apple Podcast App is criminally horrendous ... could that be the cause?

I normally watch the video cast but Youtube is terrible, anybody know how to "show unwatched episodes from X sorted oldest to news"?

I don't know how to show unwatched videos but if you click on the "LIST VIEW" button it will list all S&L videos from newest to oldest.

message 138: by Alex (new)

Alex | 90 comments Should book kickoffs and wrap ups happen in audio? Yes please! =]

Is the show the right length? Should it be shorter? Longer? I really like it's length of 41/42 minutes. It's not too long and not too short and you're able to pack lots of news and juicy stuff into it! =]

Do you like when we do audio interviews n a show or should those always be broken out as separate downloads? I think Interviews should be a separate podcast, just like they were when you did the videos =]

Do you like the 'Quick Burns' as newsy or as think pieces or the current mix? What should we do with that segment? Quick Burns is fine where it is; at the beginning and the way it's produced is fine too.

Why aren't more of you downloading it? I am downloading it *smiles*

message 143: by Rick (last edited Apr 18, 2013 01:53PM) (new)

Rick Hmmm... I've wanted an alternate pick in the past too. After all, the current format gives us only 6 Sword and 6 Laser a year. Maybe we should do a semi-organized renegade pick every month. T&V could, obviously, read it and comment on it on the podcast if they had time, but if not, no worries. We could create a Listopia list even and get some votes or just use the existing lists for Fantasy and SF.

Waaait.... the current May pick is not a subgenre I'm into... And ANYONE can start a Renegade read, right... ? Hmmmm.....

message 144: by Tom, Supreme Laser (new)

Tom Merritt (tommerritt) | 1195 comments Mod
Renegade reads are always tolerated. It's a club after all! And we know not everyone wants to read the same thing.

The alternate picks were OK when we were only doing one book every couple months but when we went to one book every month it seemed excessive.

message 145: by Robert of Dale (new)

Robert of Dale (r_dale) | 185 comments [taunt]Tom, you're not going to let the VF ladies out-do our club, are you? They almost always have an alternative pick. Are you a Laser or a Lazy-er?[/taunt]

Clyde (wishamc) | 572 comments Tom wrote: "The alternate picks were OK when we were only doing one book every couple months but when we went to one book every month it seemed excessive. "

Excessive? The way I see it, an alternate pick would be for those who have read the main pick. For example, I just finished Wool last month. (It is kind-of early to do a re-read!)
Meh. Renegade it is, I guess!
