Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I just wish Stephen Fry wasn't so insufferably smug all the time. He is quite amusing otherwise.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Hmmm.

I don't think of him as smug.

R.J. Askew (rjaskew) | 855 comments Nah, he's more Smauge

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I kind of know what you mean Simon, but I'm quite sure it's not really smugness. What I do like about Stephen Fry - apart from his immense knowledge and ability to impart it, gently but eruditely - is his obvious delight in knowledge, and an almost childish enthusiasm in new things and trying out new experiences.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments Oh, I feel mean now!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Yes Rosemary! Exactly that! His enthusiasm in learning and sharing bits of knowledge!

I don't think he's smug, as such. He just knows a lot and is comfortable with sharing the knowledge. I don't think he's overbearing about it, nor does he come across as being delighted in other's ignorance.

He is a master at taking the pee, though. Another thing I quite like about him. :)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Ach, you're not a meany Simon! x

Nawwww.

He's a soft git.

Mo (mobroon) | 729 comments Apparently he is a delight to work with. I have a friend who worked with him as a researcher and he was lovely.

I enjoyed watching and listening to that! Plenty for debate there - a really stimulating piece.

:0)

Great as he is, he can be smug sometimes. Don't feel guilty!

Andrew Fish | 102 comments Don't be fooled by QI - he doesn't actually know all of that stuff. There was a recent episode where he did a sort of "card trick" (basically shuffling a deck of cards) and claimed that he'd created something unique, simply because of the number of combinations possible. Unfortunately, that shows a fundamental misunderstanding of probability theory, so he's not as bright as he likes to think.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments No, none of are, I reckon. :)

Tim | 8539 comments (sings) You can thank your lucky stars that we're not as smart as we'd like to think we are!

Nigel (travelmaster) | 1 comments I'm a big fan of Stephen Fry, but I have to admit he can appear smug at times.

message 20: by TonyQ (new)

TonyQ (tonytheq) | 175 comments I don't think Stephen has ever claimed to know any of the stuff on QI it's the elves that research it - he just presents it and a fine job he does too!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I read somewhere recently that so many reruns of QI are being shown in Oz that its threatening local content and people are just getting sick of it.

Any comment from Australian members?

Doesn't that just mean they get the Dave channel?

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I love the Dave channel. It's really the only one I look at when we're home.

Oh and Yesterday.

Vanessa (aka Dumbo) (vanessaakadumbo) | 8459 comments I miss the Dave channel as I now have Freesat instead of Freeview.

I have to watch Red Dwarf online now ;0(

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Does Dave watch Dave? And did they ever show that film called Dave? So Dave could watch Dave on Dave...

R.M.F. Brown | 2124 comments QI can be a bit of a smug fest at times, which is most of the time! I liked it in the early days, but the same old faces kept popping up. It seems once you get on British panel shows, you're made for life!

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments I liked Alan Davies as Jonathan Creek but on QI..... oh dear....

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oh c'mon.

He's a cutie pie.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments He's smug too.

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments He thinks he is so funny. That is not endearing in a comedian. Now I think I am a great lover, but that is just me facing up to reality :)

I now have coke all over my laptop!!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Deluded, you are.

Sweet, but deluded.

I liked this too, but Steven fry is always smug that's what has madehim famous!

message 35: by Renata Ruby (new)

Renata Ruby (renaromanov) | 23 comments Steven Fry is always smug, he probably wouldn't be famous if he wasn't as it is part of his screen personality. Dare I say it, you could saythesameabout terry woman!!!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Good point Rena

Beverley Carter | 186 comments I wish I hadn't read this thread. I started with the original link and have now wasted about half an hour on other YouTube suggestions relating to Stephen Fry. My sides ache from laughing and I need the loo. Loved the original post though and as far as I'm concerned, King Fry can do no wrong.

I wonder if predictive text irritates him!

R.M.F. Brown | 2124 comments On the other hand, he did give us General Melchett, so I forgive you Stephen!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Lord Melchett. Nursie!
