I just wish Stephen Fry wasn't so insufferably smug all the time. He is quite amusing otherwise.

I kind of know what you mean Simon, but I'm quite sure it's not really smugness. What I do like about Stephen Fry - apart from his immense knowledge and ability to impart it, gently but eruditely - is his obvious delight in knowledge, and an almost childish enthusiasm in new things and trying out new experiences.
Yes Rosemary! Exactly that! His enthusiasm in learning and sharing bits of knowledge!I don't think he's smug, as such. He just knows a lot and is comfortable with sharing the knowledge. I don't think he's overbearing about it, nor does he come across as being delighted in other's ignorance.
He is a master at taking the pee, though. Another thing I quite like about him. :)

Apparently he is a delight to work with. I have a friend who worked with him as a researcher and he was lovely.
I enjoyed watching and listening to that! Plenty for debate there - a really stimulating piece.

Don't be fooled by QI - he doesn't actually know all of that stuff. There was a recent episode where he did a sort of "card trick" (basically shuffling a deck of cards) and claimed that he'd created something unique, simply because of the number of combinations possible. Unfortunately, that shows a fundamental misunderstanding of probability theory, so he's not as bright as he likes to think.

I'm a big fan of Stephen Fry, but I have to admit he can appear smug at times.
I don't think Stephen has ever claimed to know any of the stuff on QI it's the elves that research it - he just presents it and a fine job he does too!
I read somewhere recently that so many reruns of QI are being shown in Oz that its threatening local content and people are just getting sick of it.Any comment from Australian members?

QI can be a bit of a smug fest at times, which is most of the time! I liked it in the early days, but the same old faces kept popping up. It seems once you get on British panel shows, you're made for life!
I liked Alan Davies as Jonathan Creek but on QI..... oh dear....
He thinks he is so funny. That is not endearing in a comedian. Now I think I am a great lover, but that is just me facing up to reality :)

I wish I hadn't read this thread. I started with the original link and have now wasted about half an hour on other YouTube suggestions relating to Stephen Fry. My sides ache from laughing and I need the loo. Loved the original post though and as far as I'm concerned, King Fry can do no wrong.I wonder if predictive text irritates him!
