As my friend Suleiman quoted this quote in his update for A Case of Exploding Mangoes:
"I stayed silent for a while. Someone in the neighboring dorm was sobbing, probably not getting used to all the F-words being poured into his ear about his mother whom he was definitely still missing."
He went on to mention how The above quote shows the tainted state of the army, where they had no regard or respect of others or themselves. The high ranking officers in their arrogance showed little pity towards anyone of lower rank. They preferred torture over alleviation. However there can be many reasons why they would do that. To create tough solders, to eradicate a sense of self pity from the solders by desentizing them, by exposing them to harsh circumstances. Or it could be to demoralize new recruits so they could not rise in their fields and replace the current high ranking officers as future high ranking officers.
Whatever the case maybe there was one Solder who learnt from the slurs that were poured onto him about his mother. And that was Ali Shigri. In my previous update I mentioned a quote that he said:
"It is a well-known fact that curses are the last resort of frustrated mothers and useless weapons for people who do not even have the courage or vocabulary to come up with a proper invective for their enemies. It is also a well-known fact that most curses don’t work."
Ali Shigri had learnt that any slur that comes out of anyone's mouth in essence has little to no value because it makes no difference to him or his mother, and therefore he would remain in a state of pure calmness even if someone would be swearing at him or cursing at his mother. This was one positive affect of the torturous methods the high ranking officers used.
