Write a theme statement that applies to either the current SSR book you’re reading, or a previous SSR book. Explain how this theme is evident in the story. In other words, what action(s) / events take place that highlights this theme? What is the significance of this theme to the story and to us (the reader)?

Template: In the story ________ (book title) by _________ (author), it becomes apparent that the theme is _____________________________(tell me what the theme of the story is). This theme is highlighted when ______________________ ______________(describe the action / event in the story that highlights the theme). This is significant because __________________________________________(tell me why the theme is significant to the story, and even to us as readers).

In the storyUnbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemptionby Laura Hillenbrand , she suggests that persistence in the face of adversity builds character. This theme is highlighted when Louis Zamperini transforms from a troubled and troublesome child to an exceptional athlete through his determination (and support of his family), despite the challenges he faced. This life lesson is significant because we all face tough times in our lives. We may not be training for the Olympics or taken as prisoners of war by the Japanese, but we can still learn from his example to grit our teeth a little more!

Madelyn Downs | 3 comments In the story The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold it becomes apparent that the theme is love before those are gone This theme is highlighted when Salmon dies, nobody can find her and her parents regret not spening so much time with her. I bet they thought she ran away at first. This is significant because many people don't know what they have until it is gone. I can't think of the pain the parents were in when they couldn't find Salmon. But when the police found her..

Sam (sam_michaels) | 3 comments In the story Eldest by Chirstopher Paolini it becomes apparent that the theme is that you should never put all of your truts in one person. This theme is highlighted when Eragon's friend Murtagh reveals the truth of Eragon being his half brother and fights for the dictator King Galbotorix. The theme matters here because Eragon puts all of his trust into Murtagh and then is betrayed by him.

Brad Fredrickson | 2 comments In the story Leverage by Joshua Cohen, it becomes apparent that the theme is just because two people aren't interested in the same thing dosent mean they cant be friends. Amber Chadwick (amberchadwick1) | 3 comments In the story Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle, it becomes apparent that the theme is wit over crime. This theme is highlighted when Holmes outwits many criminals that no-one else could catch. This is significant because it is a good example of a slightly genius person solving a crime and doing what he loves simultaniously. He shows us through his actions that you have the ablity to outwit any difficult situation if you use your senses and thinking. It's a good book that I highly recommend!

In the story Underworld by Meg Cabot, it becomes apparent that the theme is love can live through anything, even death. This theme is highlighted when The main character, Pierce, dies, and wakes up to find John waiting for her in the Underworld. This is significant because Pierce was saved by one thing: love. That love is what didnt leave her dead, but brought her back to life. Love can last even after we're gone. it can even save us from certain deaths.

This theme is highlighted when the kids that have no adults to help them, they go crazy. They steal and fight for food, start a club to get something in return, and start arguments to win in the end. This is significant because you have to realize that although you will do anything to get what you need, you have to think about the consequences that come due to what happens.

Fallia | 2 comments In the book the hunger games by Suzanne Collins, it becomes apparent that the theme is stand up for what you believe in even if you're standing alone. This theme is highlighted when prim gets chosen to battle in the hunger games and Katniss volunteers to risk her life for something she doesn't approve of just to save her sisters life. This is significant because it shows us that we should stand up for something we believe in no matter the circumstances are. It's important to us readers because we have people that stand up for us everyday of there lives to make sure are lives are better

message 18: by John (new)

John Pace | 3 comments In the story "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" by Douglas Adams, it would appear that the theme is that compared to the massiveness of the Universe, everything and everybody is almost nothing. This is shown by the very existence of the Total Perspective Vortex, a device meant to make men (excepting the extraordinarily odd Zaphod) go insane from simply understanding its true size. The theme is also the reason why the Heart of Gold's crew are running, as Arthur and Trillian hold the Ultimate Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything, which is honestly what set the entire book in motion in the first place. It is important to the story because of the fact that it entirely revolves around this point through the voyages of the Heart of Gold, and important to us because it shows how truly minor our petty squabbles are in the great cosmic storm of existence.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

In the story, "Fallen Angels" by Walter Dean Myers, it becomes apparent that the theme is friends help each other through difficult times. This theme is highlighted when Pewee and Perry keep each other's company while getting over their injuries. This theme is significant because without friends to help us through hard times, we may never get over them. Pewee and Perry may never have gotten better without the happiness and friendship they brought to each other.

message 20: by Carter (new)

Carter Brasel | 3 comments In the story, "Ashes, Ashes" by Jo Treggiari, it becomes apparent that the theme is lonliness is as dangerous as any weapon. This theme is highlighted when Lucy meets Aidan, her first human contact in a year or two, and she finally is happy and wants to live again. This theme is significant because it emphasizes the human need for companionship and that it is indeed a necessity. The whole book also could have been different because when Lucy goes to the camp, she becomes almost a leader for them. Also if they just never met, then the book would have been flat and boring.

message 21: by Mason (new)

Mason Overton | 2 comments In the story of the Enemy by Lee Child the theme is never forget your enemys name. This theme appears in ther book when Jack realizes the person who died was his biggest enemy. This is significant because you never see it coming and it is the turning point in the book.

message 22: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Perales In the story A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, it becomes apparent that the theme is how great the inner strength of a woman can be. This theme is highlighted when Mariam faces a father who refuses to acknowledge her, a husband who abuses her for twenty-seven years, and needing to murder the man when he is determined to kill Laila. This is significant because both Mariam and Laila endure so much heartache merely because they are women, yet each continuously pulls together the strength to persevere.

This theme is highlighted when, Benny gets a trading card showing that there are other people his age in the Rot & Ruin; that have experienced what he's been through. message 25: by Weston (new)

Weston (awfulpigeons) | 4 comments In the story A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin, it becomes apparent that the theme is "The competition for power yields little in the end". This theme is highlighted when Maester Cressen tries to poison Melisandre (because she is becoming more influential to Stannis Baratheon), but ends up dying instead. This is significant because Cressen's grab for power resulted in a total shift of power, which then affected Stannis and-through him-the balance of power for the entire continent, and also because it shows us that there are more meaningful things we can do to affect a group of people than to lead them.

message 26: by Lucas (new)

Lucas Scott | 5 comments In the story The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass by Stephen King, it becomes apparent that the theme is Love can become ones destruction, or beginning. This theme is highlighted when Roland must be knocked back to his senses after becoming numb with love. Well not so much hard-hitting mystery but it is a mysteery book. This theme is highlighted when The monks From the Four Peaks on Mount Tlmp have to leave there home to go and look for a different one becuase the agents are finiding their hiding places. This is significant because it shows us that not only will they have to move quietly but they have to work together as a team to make sure no one gets left behind. Abby Peek | 3 comments In the story Deep and Dark and Dangerous by Mary Downing Hahn, it becomes apparent that the theme is "Dont take life for granted" . This theme is highlighted when Sissy trys to play with Emma and is very mean to her. I think she's doing it out of hate because she never really got to grow up and live her life because she died. This is significant because if Sissy wasnt mean you would never find out what happend to the girl AKA Sissy who drowned. Without Sissy being mean and hateful Ali would really have no reason to go searching for answers.

Template: In the story Where She Went by Gayle Forman, it becomes apparent that the theme is finding a first love is hard, but once that love is found it’s hard to find that same feeling again. This theme is highlighted when Mia calls Adam back to her dressing room and then again runs after him after he storms out in anger. This is significant because Mia left Adam for New York, which was fine with Adam, they were still a couple, but after a few months in the big city Mia cut off all connections with Adam. He got a new girlfriend thinking he would never here, nor see from Mia again. It becomes clear to Adam, very early on in his new relationship, that he doesn’t love Bryn. (new girlfriend)

Megan Norem | 3 comments In the story The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan, it becomes apparent that the theme is home is where you feel loved and wanted. This theme is highlighted when Percy finds friends and his father and all about who he actually is. This is significant because Percy was moving every year from place to place and never felt like he belonged anywhere until he was forced to go to a place that would keep him safe, which also ended up being the place he belonged and where he was loved.

Sean Lewis | 3 comments Template: In the story Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz, it becomes apparent that the theme is that you can't limit yourself. This theme is highlighted when Alex Rider, 14, is hired by MI6 to finish a mission his uncle couldn't finish, and came through and did so on his own. This is significant because Alex was never very popular and never gave himself credit, and at first he wanted nothing to do with MI6, but he challenged himself, then when he put forth enough effort, he found that he could achieve "impossible" tasks.

message 35: by Ryan (new)

Ryan Leeper | 3 comments In the story "Football Genius" by Tim Green it becomes apparent that the theme is never give up no matter how many times you get thrown to the ground. This theme is highlighted when Troy finally gets to show off his talents for a good cause and helps his mother keep her job. This is significant because he knows whats going to happen next in a football game and his mother works for the Atlanta Falcons, but when they start losing games and the coach my get fired and with him Troy's mom. So he helps them win a couple games and his mom keeps her job. He also finally gets to prove himself on the field.

Braedon | 3 comments In the story Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison it becomes apparent that the theme is that when society ignores you you should do something so they can't, not a bad thing something so good they can't pretend not to notice. The theme is highlighted when he goes to college at the beggining. He did it and wasn't ignored. This is significant because when he went to college that is where hil life and his future is being molded around all of the choices he is making out there.

This theme is highlighted when Shug (main character) goes into Middle School and all her friends grow up but she doesn't personality wise.
