Jim (jimmaclachlan) Cute cake, Joy. Thanks. I'll tell him for you.

Joy,
I've got a fantastic sense of smell, I smell things before anyone else and from a much greater distance. I smell the salt on Juneau's feet and I say he has smelly feet, while Anthony and Eric can't smell it at all and think I'm crazy.
We should go to the mall and smell all the perfume and compare notes.

Today, in 15 minutes, I'm going to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I am so excited and I only hope there's no screaming, talking, bratty kids to ruin it for me, LOL
I loved reading the series and await each movie in a state of high anticipation. I'll tell you how it is later or tomorrow.

Nina | 6069 comments This is what I am doing today; dealing with termite erradicators, handing over two genealogical notebooks to a relative(one has 186 pages double sides) and the other not as many and I have one more to go. But, first we had our house painted this week and had to move all kinds of pots with flowers and furniture in and out of places and then I am having fourteen for lunch on Monday so must clean house, grocery shop, cook etc. and the next day I have company coming from out of town for a week visit. After that, I must start of the third gen. book. In between all this I am glued to tv watching The Tour d' France. Tomorrow they are going to Le Grand Bornand where I once stayed in a funny unfinished chalet for a month in the winter..I might be the only person who went to a ski resort in the Alps and didn't ski. nina

Nina, where do you get all your energy? I'm exhausted after one day (yesterday) of lunching and shopping in Saratoga Springs. Our Red Hat group enjoyed a delicious gourmet meal at Chez Sophie at the Saratoga Hilton. See:
http://www.thesaratogahotel.com/chez_...

After lunch I spent a long time walking along Broadway, window shopping. Now my back and leg muscles are complaining.

Enjoy your company, Nina. Do you have help come in when you do all these things?

Nina, that sounds scrumptious! Perfect for summertime. I admire your ability to carry off an event like this. I could never do it. I get such a case of nerves whenever company comes that I've stopped having company. Of course, I don't consider my family company, thank goodness. :)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Just returned from a week's vacation in the 1000 Islands area (Clayton NY).

Left out the hummingbird feeders (2). Once again the racoon attacked the one feeder. Takes out the yellow flowers and tosses (? perhaps spits) on the ground. This time, the critter took the bottom of the feeder and tossed that on the ground. Sometimes I think of putting a web cam on the deck in order to witness this action!

Good to be home and sleep in your own bed. Such a pleasure!

Welcome back, Linda. Those raccoons are busy this season. :)

Yesterday we boated down to the islands to visit some friends who were camping. On the way back our engine broke down. Eddie had to radio the LG Patrol for help. Within 10 minutes the patrol appeared and towed us back to our dock. Ed still has to find out what's wrong with the engine.

Today I'm resting. :) I'm happy to have my books to curl up with. Today I'm also looking forward to another Netflix DVD which I will mention in the movie thread.

Ha! I take $20 for horse betting. I bet a horse across the board which is $6. Won $6.50. More or less the same winnings/losses for the next few races. Went home with some loose bills in my pocket.

A few hours of fun, inexpensiv entertainment. :)

Once I tried betting while on a cruise. Bet 5 dollars. Lost 5 dollars. In other words, I actually paid to be disappointed. That's how I saw it. :)

Linda (goodreadscomlinda_p) | 1251 comments Just got back from a 2-day visit to LI to visit Mom and other family members. Of course, I have to pick the hottest days of summer!!

Yesterday we visited the: http://www.sweetbriarnc.org/vivarium..... The butterfly house was hotter than the outside temperature. My clothing stuck to me. Well worth it - got some good pictures.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I used to live on Long Island & still have family in Centerport & Smithtown. I haven't been back in years. We used to live out by Lake Ronkonkahma. We had a 7 acre farm & could ride all over. 20 years later the place was nothing but a mass of houses & strip malls. Such a shame!

Linda, your link didn't work. I got a 404 error. I'll bet the place was pretty, though. Lots of flowers?

I have two lilies blooming on my little pond now. Very pretty.

Jim, you must have great memories of the 7 acre farm on LI. My memories of LI center around Jones Beach. We used to drive down there from Yonkers, NY, with a bunch of friends. We'd return home red as lobsters from spending all day in the sun. I was a regular Moby Dick, diving through the waves with no fear. Those days are gone forever! :)

For 3-4 years I lived in Port Jeff Station. My husband lived in Oakdale - a few blocks from the Great South Bay. He could hunt in his area. Not anymore. As you mentioned, many strip malls, malls, and now condominiums and townhouses just pop up everywhere.

One major difference from upstate NY to LI is - the second a traffic light turns from Red to Green - they honk. Honk honk honk. Up here, we seem to wait over a minute before we even think of honking at the non-moving car in front of us!!

Linda, funny you should mention that. The other day, down in Glens Falls, someone honked behind me just one second after the light turned green. Must have been someone from LI! LOL

PS-Next time we go to Montreal, we'll check out the Montreal Bontanical Garden you mentioned. I have my enhanced driver's license. So I don't need a passport. Eddie still has to get his enhanced driver's license.

Can't wait to see the grandkids! They always look so much taller everytime we see them. The last time we saw them was Easter weekend.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, Linda. Looks like a neat place. We used to go up & down the Nissequogue all the time. My uncle worked & lived on the Long Island Game Farm, back when it was a private club. Now it's a park. His house was on the corner of Jericho & Old Willett's Path. We had full run of the whole place.

If you put:
25 and Old Willett's Path, smithtown, ny
into Google Maps, you can get a satellite view of the place & see the whole park.

His first place was due north, across the turnpike by Gardiner Road. It was a real patch of wilderness in the middle of suburbia. My cousin even ran a trapline a couple of winters.

Thanks, Jim. I looked at the satellite view of the park in Smithtown, which you referred us to. It's great that they've preserved that land as a park.

I miss the ocean terribly. Eric goes out there every summer. Pop and Granma tell me it's changed drastically. All the farms have given way to condos and grape vines. Enjoy the LG Islands, your kids and grandkids. With the warm weather everyone should be able to enjoy swimming in the water. A few weeks ago the LG water was still quite cold.

We used to canoe on the Peconic River in Riverhead. Great fishing!

We'll be going to Montauk LI in September as my husband does surf fishing for striped bass. Although I don't surf fish (poles are long and heavy and water can be rough) its a great kick just to watch the fisherman fish (yes, its politically correct in this case as 99.9% of the people fishing are men).

Its when I get caught up on lots of reading - sitting under my beach umbrella, or walking along the rocky shoreline.

And, we get to enjoy eating fresh caught fish at the local restaurants. Eat fish until I can't eat anymore!!!

Yes, there are many wineries on the end of the island on both the north and south shores. At least they aren't condos.

Today, I thought I'd streamline my healing stones and crystal information. I have an excellent new book that I want to add more info from. This is proving to be a big job, I've been doing it for the past 2 hours and barely put a dent in what I aready have, nevermind the new info!
Time for a break, a nice cool shower and sitting on the porch with nosy dog. I'll read while he scopes out what everyone's doing, LOL

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Years ago we cruised through Peconic Bay (on LI, NY) on our way to Watch Hill Marina on Fire Island in Great South Bay. We had cruised down the Hudson River and across LI Sound to get to Peconic Bay (and all the other bays). We did this in a 21 foot Cruisers Bonanza camper boat... with 4 kids! We overnighted in a marina someplace on the north shore of LI (NorthPort, I think). Below is a thumbnail pic of the boat at an island dock on Lake George:

As I look back, it's hard to believe all the cruising we did in our boats. Ed is an intrepid captain!

Jackie, do you believe in healing stones? I could use some healing! I now have bursitis in my left hip... on top of the torn minicsus in my right knee. I am currently going for therapy. The good news is that I now have a permit to park in the disabled parking areas since I have to keep my walking to a minimum. Had my first experience using an electric cart at the supermarket. Those things are great fun. :)
