Linda - he said that they were funny and not ponderworthy. In other words, he will only take short stories that make you think. Funny ones apparently do not fall in that category.
Linda wrote: " Everyone get your Vit D today under those blue skies? Haven't seen THAT lately!"Yes, it's been a beautiful day! Tomorrow the temps are supposed to be in the 80s. The next day too.
I was wishing for warm weather. But now I'm starting to rethink. :)

I like the name "PonderWorthy". A good theme for short stories.A new form of Aesop's Fables.
Wiki says:
"The fables remain a popular choice for moral education of children today."

Today I'm preparing to go to the Wood Theater tonight to see the musical, "Ordinary Days", with my sister who's visiting. See more about "Ordinary Days" at: ====>http://culturemob.com/events/5897747-...
It's playing at the Wood Theater in downtown Glens Falls.
I won't be back until tomorrow. I won't have access to the Internet while I'm gone.
I'll miss you guys. :)
I am holing up in my apartment because of the heat. I have been at the computer and reading A Curse Dark as Gold (great book, by the way) As a result, I am almost through with the book and am catching up on my computer. It has actually been a blessing.

Sooner or later everything gets done. Meanwhile things get a bit messy. :)
Enjoyed the musical "Ordinary Days" at the Wood Theater in Glens Falls. Afterwards the audience had a chance to have a group discussion with the author and the director. They called it "Book Club Night". A great idea!
Rain and dark skies today. What are U doing today? We are going camping Th-Sun at Limekiln Lake, Inlet NY. With the poor weather forecast, I'm happy to say we have a camper. Today, loading up with books to read for the trip.
I'll be food shopping for our camping trip - Saturday night is steaks cooked over the campfire and a salad.
Let's hope the holiday weekend isn't a wash out!

So, if the weather holds out, we might put our boat in the water for the season.

Linda wrote: "Joy, and I hope your boat gets in the water! At least then you can catch a few hours here and there."Thanks, Linda. You're right! I'd better get off this computer and get myself moving. Eddie is eager to get the boat in the water.
In about ten minutes, my wife and I will be leaving for a week's vacation to visit family, and I'll have virtually no Internet access while we're gone. So I'll be absent from Goodreads for the duration, alas! :-) But I wish you all a great week in the meantime.

Today is Eddie's 77th birthday. I plan to take him out to dinner. Because of the rain last week, we never launched his boat. Maybe today we'll get to it.
Joy H. (of Glens Falls) wrote: "Today is Eddie's 77th birthday. I plan to take him out to dinner. Because of the rain last week, we never launched his boat. Linda wrote: "Happy B'Day, Eddie. Joy & Eddie - hope you get the boat launched either today or at least this week! Enjoy the sunshine."Thanks, Linda. The sun is shining now, but the predictions aren't good. The reports say: "Scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon". So what else is new? (lol) I feel sorry for the hotel/motel owners. Bad weather is bad for business.
Jim wrote: "Happy birthday, Eddie! Treat him good, Joy."LOL Thanks, Jim. I will. I'm taking him out to dinner and we might launch his boat (which will make him very happy!). I also sent him a "Happy Birthday" email which contained (among others) the following gif:
(Click on thumbnail.) (g)We'll celebrate "off-peak" with the kids when they come to the lake on their camping vacations. The kids gave him a big surprise party out on the camping island for his 75th birthday. Below is a link to an album of photos we took:

Morning all. With today's forecast, think I'll do housework and finish reading the book North River by Pete Hamill (book for the Crandall Library Book Club).
JimMacLachlan - I just looked at the winter storm pictures from your family photo album (from a 3/13/09 posting). Beautiful outdoor pictures. Hope you had some wood burning stoves in the house!!
Linda, Thanks for the compliments on the pictures. It was pretty, if difficult. No wood burning stoves, unfortunately. (Insurance won't let me.) Propane heater, though. It was pretty ugly, but at least we had water, a generator & the heaters. We have to have backup in an all electric house out in the boonies.

Good morning! Haven't started reading _North River A Novel_ yet. I'll do that after I finish _My Sister's Keeper_. I'm on the last few pages, thank goodness.
More rain is predicted for today. :-(

Jim, six days was a long time to go without electricity. Do you get many outages there? We get them so often here in the boonies that we finally broke down and bought an automatic electric generator. It goes on automatically when our electricity goes off. Our neighbor has one too and there's one at the association pump house. They're a great comfort.
We have a generator but doesn't come on automatically. Live at the end of a dead end street, and home is surrounded by trees - mostly quite old and tall pine trees.Still waiting for summer.....in the meantime I best get to the housework!
Linda wrote: "We have a generator but doesn't come on automatically. Live at the end of a dead end street, and home is surrounded by trees ...I best get to the housework!"
Housework? LOL
Joy, we get an outage or two every year. They usually don't last long, though. I thought LONG & HARD before buying the generator I did. I thought about getting one big enough to run more of the house than what I got, but opted instead to get a smaller one because I'd use it more. Mine is 50 lbs full of gas, so I can easily carry it in one hand walking through the woods or toss it into the pickup. It runs about 6 hours on a tank of gas at full load.We keep a Coleman stove, a few propane heaters with a extra full tanks, candles & the generator handy. We have city water & UPS's on the TV & computers, so losing power isn't a terrible ordeal. It's easy enough to string a few extension cords around for the lights & swap the cord for the fridge, freezer, TV or microwave as needed.

Yes! My home is usually neat but not always "clean" - so today is cleaning day. Gives me exercise! I've cleaned for 1 1/2 hours and now taking a little break while the floors dry. Our great room (living/dining/kitchen and small entrance way)is tiled flooring.
Finished reading North River. Good book.

What does UPS stand for, relative to TV and computers?
Linda wrote: "...Finished reading North River. Good book."Linda, congrats on accomplishing your gruesome task. :)
Glad to hear that _North River_ is a good book. I'll be starting it soon... However, two more Netflix DVDs just arrived in the mail today. Big distractions from reading and housework. :) At least they'll help me pass the time while we wait out this miserable weather.
UPS = Uniform or Uninterrupted Power Supply. I have a good one for the TV, Satellite, PC & such. We do get a fair few power flickers & it takes the satellite thingy a few minutes to reconnect when that happens. It's a pain, so I got an old one that was getting tossed & replaced the batteries. Got it for about 1/4 the cost at the time.I spent extra money on the generator & got a Honda. Not only is it very quiet, but if it isn't delivering the correct voltage, it won't deliver any. I read some horror stories about people who had their Energy Star appliances get burned out by cheap generators.
A new fridge is $800 or so, not counting the food. The freezer is less expensive to buy, but has a lot of expensive food in it. Neither is something I want to burn up by saving a little on a generator.

Eddie explained to me that my laptop goes on batteries when the power fails, but you need the UPS for your desktop computer. He also said that our generator won't deliver either if the voltage is wrong. So many things to know and worry about! Oi!
I just got back from the vet's. Harley, our 10 year old JRT bitch, suddenly got very sick Sunday night. Something is attacking her liver. Marg took her to the vet yesterday & she's on antibiotics & something else, but Marg had to force the pill down her - she wouldn't even eat peanut butter! She still hadn't drank anything today by the time I got home, so she's at the vet's on an IV. He's going to check her white count again in the morning. If it's high, either she goes on another medication or he'll want her to have a liver biopsy. If it is the latter, we're going to put her down. There's little chance it will find anything that's curable & it's very expensive. She's suffering too.
Jim wrote: "I just got back from the vet's. Harley, our 10 year old JRT bitch, suddenly got very sick Sunday night. Something is attacking her liver. Marg took her to the vet yesterday & she's on antibiotic..."Sorry to hear about Harley. Hard decision about when to put a pet down. Sounds like you've thought out all the options. Let's pray the white count is good and Harley will be with you for a while longer.
Jim wrote: "I just got back from the vet's. Harley, our 10 year old JRT bitch, suddenly got very sick Sunday night. Something is attacking her liver. Marg took her to the vet yesterday & she's on antibiotic..."Jim, I hope Harley will be OK. It's such a heartache when a dog is sick. They're just like children to us. I still haven't gotten over the loss of our Maltese, jorji, whom we put to sleep at 17 years of age in 2006. I keep wishing we had done it sooner because he wasn't well at all those last few months. Good luck to Harley.
Thanks all. Marg is not dealing with this well. She was much better about the kids being in critical condition - we've had 2 wind up in the ICU due to horse accidents. One was on a ventilator for 6 days. Must have been the Mom adrenaline kicking in.I guess the other issue is money. It cost $300 for the visit on Monday & we don't know what it's going to cost for the next few days. We do know we can't afford the liver biopsy & I think that's bugging her. With a kid, cost doesn't matter.
Jim wrote: "Thanks all. Marg is not dealing with this well. She was much better about the kids being in critical condition ... I guess the other issue is money. ... With a kid, cost doesn't matter."Jim, I know what you mean about the money we have to spend on our pets. To people who don't enjoy pets, it must seem frivolous, but to pet-lovers it's money well-spent most of the time. However, when the cost becomes prohibitive, it becomes a huge issue. We are all torn when we are faced with this kind of choice. We once spent over a thousand dollars on surgery which our Maltese, jorji, needed, but he lived for a long time after that and we felt that it was worth it to us. With an older dog, the decision is more difficult. I completely understand what Marg and you are going through.
As a dog/cat/horse lover I can only say I understand what you are going through and Marge. My husband said he thought he'd lost me as well as my Irish setter when she died. It is so hard. I have to believe that she will get better or end up in a better place. The dog, that is. nina
Thanks all. The news still isn't good. She's not eating or drinking today, either. We'll have to talk tonight.
Well, Harley is home & is drinking. No eating, though. Turned up her nose at chicken soup broth. Cross your fingers.

Jim wrote: "Well, Harley is home & is drinking. No eating, though. Turned up her nose at chicken soup broth. Cross your fingers."A good sign. Perhaps later Harley will try that chicken soup broth. My fingers are crossed, too.

Linda wrote: "Just came back from a 1.5 mile walk in my neighborhood. Beautiful day! If you are in the Lake George NY area - get outside today. :)"Good advice, Linda. Yes, it seems like a beautiful day. I will try to get outside. Current temp at 11:30 AM is 70F and there's a nice breeze. I do have a little problem of a sore knee which inhibits my walking. It's sure slowing me down! Don't know what's causing it except for the fact that I was carrying heavy plants downstairs in our vacation home. I'm not used to going up and downstairs in our house in town which is ranch style. My muscles and ligaments may be complaining. Am taking Ibuprofen. That should help.

Jim, sorry to hear about Harley. We have gone the $2,000 route with our 5 1/2 yr. old beagle for back surgery at Cornell Vet's Hospital in NY. The surgery went well but he could't walk or do bodily functions. I nursed him for 1 1/2 yrs. Then the back started hurting again and I put him down. With the vet and hospital costs it was $3500, BACK IN 1977. aLL YOU CAN DO IS THINK OF A PET LIKE A CHILD AND DO YOUR BEST. Last week I wrote you a long e-mail and as I was spell checking it, it went poof and never returned. All my best,Donna God Bless Marley.
Thanks, Donna. I'm afraid that's part of our problem is that Harley isn't one of the kids, so how much we can afford does become a factor. She's up to $800 now & I'm afraid that's it. It makes the decision harder to live with, not any easier to make. For a kid, you just suck it up, no matter what. James cost about $70,000 or so, although insurance paid most, when he had his chest crushed after his horse broke its leg & he spent 6 days on a ventilator. Erin cost about half that when her spleen got cracked after her horse dumped & stepped on her. Brandon was by far the least expensive, although he had the most accidental damages. It was under $10,000 when he flipped the motorcycle over a jump at 60mph. His back was one big strawberry & he had a nifty set of bruises, but somehow didn't really get hurt too bad. They just did every test known to mankind figuring he HAD to have some other injuries.
When James set him on fire (young Edison (James) was trying to make glass) it was only $100 or so, but that was one of the more horrifying accidents we had. I guess when James squirted alkaline in Erin's eyes (he was trying to take a battery apart) that was one of the most horrendous - worse than the spleen, to me. She was only 3 or so. Almost lost her eyesight.
Anyway, Harley is doing somewhat better. She's not eating yet, but is taking a bit of milk. Marg's been giving her some every hour or less & she takes a few laps each time. She is drinking water, so there is some improvement.

Hi Jim, My prayers are with both you and Marg that Harley bounces back, quickly. Your Kids lead dangerous lives. I thought what we went through with our 3 girls were bad and very expensive. You know we all try to do our best with the health and bringing up our kids, and yes our pets, also. They are just as important to us as our kids. God Bless, Donna
Harley ate half a biscuit when I got home! And drank a little milk. Maybe she will make it.Kids will be kids. We quit counting stitches years ago & even the kids have trouble remembering who got them & when. We always figured they should try stuff & have opportunities. Unfortunately, that means they can get hurt. They all lived through it, that's what counts.
