What I was doing today wasn't fun as I fell early this morning in the bathroom and hit my back on the edge of the toilet seat. In pain today and probably off to the dr tomorrow. Wish me luck that I didn't 'break anything.

Thank you, Jim and Joy. I guess my memory was accurate---I remembered it as just average and will not bother re-reading it.!
I have a small broken rib. The good news is that it didn't puncture my lung so no chance of pneumonia. The dr says even a small rib broken hurts just as much as a large one; six weeks recovery period. Guess I can get a lot of reading done in between the pains. Thanks for your good wishes.
Ouch. Sorry to read that, Nina. I hate broken ribs. No coughing, sneezing, or even deep breaths for a while & they get you for weeks & weeks.
Nina, I hope your rib heals quickly.I one time fell and bruised my ribs on our piano bench. It was really painful but in a matter of time I was OK. I think I took painkillers.
Joy, you know the feeling. The dr said the recovery would be six weeks but who knows maybe it will be sooner. I am so grateful that I winterize the garden before this; although I do need to mulch later on.
Getting in and out of bed makes me wish I didn't have to do it as the pain is pretty bad but once up I can go about my chores and yes, pain medicine does help. Too bad I no longer have a cat or dog to sympathize with me. But, my husband does a pretty good job. Thanks for all your good wishes and yes, this too will pass.
I was able to take a short walk outside among the lovely brilliant colored trees in our seventy degree weather. Not too painful walking just getting up and down hurts the worst but bearable..
We have another horse to look at this morning. Not sure if I'm going or not since he seems like a waste of time. 4 years old, only had 60 days of training last year, & he hasn't been ridden since then. Just to make things worse, it's chilly today - mid 30s now, a couple of hours before dawn - & the ground is soft. If the wind gets up, that's all we need to make a horse feel like bouncing about. I think he's too tall too, close to 15h. I don't know why Marg thinks he's a good idea.Today is Erin's birthday (29) & yesterday was James' (36). He was complaining about his advanced age. Ha! He doesn't seem to realize how it makes me feel to have a middle aged kid.
A fair few chores on the list today. I need to finish cleaning the back gardens around the house. Just cutting off the dead flowers & dumping them. Hay moved to the horse barn, although it's awfully wet. We just got over 3" of rain the past few days - over 10" in October for a yearly total of over 60". We're already close to the record of 66" for the year.
I've got to pick up & fix or replace the old shoe shelf we use for grooming supplies under the wall box in the grooming area. Both Tango & Pumpkin have beat it up lately so it's falling apart. I wonder if I can salvage it. It's certainly not a great piece of furniture, but it has some history. I made it about 30 years ago out of the old wainscoting I salvaged from the old porch at the farm before we put on the big mud room addition. We put the wainscoting into the porch over a decade before that. It was made out of wood we salvaged from an old outhouse on the farm. I have no idea how old that was, but I'd guess 30 or 40 years, anyway. I remember we cut the bottom foot or so off of all the boards & they had a nice barn board look. No one can ever accuse me of not recycling or making things that last.
Nina wrote: "Wait until you have a seventy year old "child," Jim. Then you can feel old."Actually, I don't feel old until he starts pointing out how old he is & then I want a recount!
;)
We had another horse to look at yesterday morning, although he seemed like a waste of time, but she was right. We hired Kayla, Marg's trainer, to be our crash test dummy. Of course, the horse was dead quite, unlike the last. He was only 14.2h & was comfortable to ride bareback. He would have worked except he has something going on in his near hind in the front of the pastern (between the ankle & cornet band in the front). There's a noticeable lump & the hoof twists when he walks on it. I noticed he didn't like circling clockwise with Kayla.
She had a lot of trouble getting him to even walk, but she's a tiny gal & was riding in a saddle. I had to cut her a stick to get him to move. When she was done, we pulled off the saddle & I hopped on bareback. He moved then & I could feel he was slightly off on that leg immediately. He's only 4 & it looks like a permanent issue - arthritis or something. He'll probably go permanently lame in a few years. Sigh. Nice boy, too.
The place was just awful. The lady seemed nice, but she obviously had too many horses & too much to do around the place. I guess she got a lot of nice stuff while married, got divorced, & just can't keep up with it all herself. Her daughter is away at college & she's in graduate school herself. The horses are suffering for it. Awful paddocks, wormy, & not enough land. I hate seeing places like that.
Sorry to hear about your fall, Nina. My husband fell in our home yesterday and once two days ago. Hit the same knee.He has a physical this morning and will have the doctor check out his knee. Put a hot/cold patch on knee immediately.
Recovery is slow but hopefully will keep up and I'm trying to take it easy to help it along but sometimes life gets in the way and then the darn pain reappears. But, yes. I am better and shouldn't complain.
Glad you're getting better. Ribs are like that - the gift that never seems to stop giving. You'll be fine, fine, & ouch! Mom is now down to using just a cane. Still can't bend her knee well due to the swelling, but getting there. It's been 9 weeks & she's going crazy.
In October I joined Book of the Month club on the recommendation of a granddaughter and received the hard back copy of "The Clockmaker's Daughter," and just started reading it a few days ago to discover there were two pages missing, # 26 and 27 that seemed important to the following story. I did call BOM yesterday and they apologized and said they would send another copy that afternoon. We'll see. You don't know what you're missing until it is missing.
We haven't gotten above freezing since the night before last. Still got rain, though. It was right at 32F when I drove in this morning at 5am. Everything is covered in ice, although the roads were pretty good. Almost all was just wet & the few patches of black ice weren't a problem driving in for me.I expect there will be school delays & a mess since the temperature usually drops a degree or 2 by the time dawn comes around. The various hollows & valleys often catch slightly colder air, too. Lots of little roads that won't get salted in time so will be icy sheets.
Very low temps at night here but not so bad in daytime; forty three today and in the low fifties tomorrow. Smattering of snow one day but gone by the next morning.
Doctor said let the knee heal on its own. He's been putting hot/cold patches on knee. Said no need for x-ray. Thanks for the good wishes for my hubby!
We had some snow a few days ago and more expected. Found a roof snow shoveler and called him to come today. Very reasonable price. Last year our snow plower guy did the roof but he's very expensive - he does a great job plowing our 300 foot driveway. All we have left is to shovel our walkway area - from front of house to garage and back of house to garage.
We are all set with hired help for this winter!! And that's a good thing.
Great on all counts, Linda. We got enough ice a couple of days ago to knock out power to the road in the morning. It was on when I left at 4:30am, but off by the time my wife went out at 6am. Ours stayed on, thankfully. Sometime between 9:30-2:30, the ice got heavy enough to pull a big limb off a Cleveland pear in front. Poor Marg had a time getting around it with the bus. I cut some off to give her more room & plan to pull it out this afternoon or tomorrow with the tractor. The ground is so wet, but it's gray & overcast, so not good drying weather.
Not a fun day; but glad we don't all live in the Fire zone in CA. Most of my family live there but fortunately they are safe so far. My husband and I were in Paradise CA multiple times visiting friends and so grateful they had moved.

Oh dear. Ice and its not even winter. Let's all brace ourselves. But on the other hand this could (not likely) change to warm weather. It has happened!
Nice day today. Sunny and currently 34 degrees. We are getting ready for a 2-day getaway. This is part of my husband's birthday present. Birthday is 12/25. Going to Turning Stone Casino - free rooms. Have meal vouchers to keep us fed for 2 days and some free play vouchers from the casino. Maybe this time we'll win big. Hey! Someone does win - why not let it be us! Hahaha. We have a good time watching people, relaxing in a nice room, eating at the restaurants, taking a ride, play the slots, and enjoy one another's company. All good.
We are also going to stop along the way to the casino to check for snow geese and snowy owls. Read the snow geese were up at Montezuma Refuge Center in Seneca Falls area. Last month we went up to Plattsburgh and Rouses Point (near the Canadian border) but weren't lucky enough to spot any snow geese. I keep trying though!
Coming home Wednesday.
We're getting close to 60 today with unexpectedly sunny skies. While I got the mess cleaned up yesterday - the big chunk of tree - I'm going to cut even more out of it today. The ground is still a little soft, but the tree is shaped like a big fan now. Perfect for catching the wind & it will certainly lose more limbs soon unless I cut them first.

Lots of work to do with your tree - watch out for mud!!
Thanks all. NO snow last night - driveway is clear. A good start.Have to go out and change out the bird feeder. Birds were on the feeder constantly yesterday and left it totally empty!!
The tree wasn't a problem & only took a couple of hours, even cutting up the larger butts into bowl blanks. I just cut the limbs off, hooked a chain to a few & dragged them into the field. I pulled of the chain & used the bucket to shove the limbs into a brush pile on the edge of the woods above the little pond. It took 3 trips & now the remainder of the tree looks kind of funny - very sparse limbs compared to the big trunk. Hopefully it will fill out next year.
In case I don't get around to it have a Happy Thanksgiving to all my Goodreads friends. I am thankful that none of my extended family in CA were affected by fire/so far only smoke and it's bad according to them but not like losing your home or your life. I am also thankful I am down to one pain pill a day rather than three and that I can enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with my family/a son comes from CA tomorrow. Three weeks ago I could barely get out of bed. So I am slowly improving.
