Happy Mother's Day! We started ours off with a bang. I got up & was brushing my teeth, so Pip went outside & started barking. I didn't think much of it, so finished my various ablutions before going out to tell him to be quiet. It was about 5am & Marg didn't want to get up until 5:30. He had a young coon & they had quite a battle. It finally escaped from him over the fence & back into the woods. Hopefully it learned its lesson. Amber is too old & deaf. She slept through the whole thing. Lily stayed in the house. She wants no part of coons any more.
I got the water running in the fish pond, a 1/2 bucket of gravel scattered through the stream, & all the rocks put around it before coming in for dinner. Lily & I need to get some more rocks as this is a little bigger than the last one. Then I'll transplant some of the hostas, cone flowers, & such. I'll dig up some myrtle (periwinkle) & transplant it, too. There's lot of steep areas that will need to be held together & protected over the winter after the hostas lose their leaves. I also have to transfer the fish. The water is murky, but it doesn't look like the system lost a drop. That's always a worry. The tiniest leak can drain the pond over night. Hopefully I'll get this done this morning. I have a lot of other projects that need attention, not the least of which is my lawnmower. I got dry gas & more gas yesterday, so I'll see if that is the issue.
Jim, you've gotten so much done already this morning. All I've done is have a cup of coffee and going to make my 2nd soon. Then, I'll attack some chores. Going to repot some of my indoor plants. The hostas along the side of the house - with the least amount of sun daily - are about 4 inches high. Just have to pick up some pine cones which seem to be falling in buckets from the skies above!

It's a chilly Mother's Day morning. Supposed to get up to 70 degrees by 5pm. Well, at least we'll be able to sit outside on back deck later on today. Going to replant some of my indoor plants. Then we purchased 3 small plants yesterday and will repot them into one planter. Nice reds and pinks for the hummingbirds.
Last week washed all the lace like curtains on back windows and cleaned the windows. Put the curtains back up last night. Now today plan to go out on deck and clean the outside windows and the outside French doors. Needs more than windex. Usually have to use a sponge with hot soap and water, then some water and vinegar. Back windows and doors get quite dirty throughout the winter.
These are feel good tasks. The back of the house will be done. Then, when the weather warms up we'll buy plants for the deck. Usually have to wait until after May 31st - because of the possibilities of frost.
At least you got it done. Well done, Jim!
Today, via streaming, we watched our lovely granddaughter be given her college degree. Isn't technology grand!
Which college. I agree sometimes tech..is wonderful as I keep track of my grandchildren and children that way and of course, friends and my goodread friends. However, just listened to a report about a place for addicted to their social media kids to go to that have terrible problems letting go and having a normal life. Glad I didn't have that problem raising my children.
Ninety one here today so AC from now on. Pansies don't like this temp any more than I do.

Mostly busy with sweeping up pine needles and than we get high winds and I have to do it all over again; they get into my garden plants and scatter themselves everywhere.
But, won't you feel great when all is completed as will the fish.
Good the coon wasn't in your house or down the chimney as one was once at ours.

I finally finished my week plus long project of moving the fish pond to the other side of the house. It came out pretty good. I documented it with about a dozen pictures on Facebook here:https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...
I'm hoping it will look a lot better in a couple of years. I need to get some more stones from the stream & plan to buy a bunch more fantasy creatures from the gal who sold me the fairy princess during the Ren Faire in June. Father's Day is during the fair, so I have a feeling I'll get a few as gifts. Since my wife & kids never know what to get me, I'm sure I will.

I love the daylilies and the coneflowers. Hope they will be in the new location. It's looking good and I assume will be even better as you say, in a couple of years..Most of the harder work of moving is done.
I did put some cone flowers near the corner against the house, but no day lilies, at least not yet. I needed the space for my hostas. I used to have over a dozen varieties before we moved here, but I've lost some as I don't have many good places to plant them any more. I have day lilies all over. They line 3 sides of the back yard so I don't have to weedeat along the fence plus they're still in where the old pond was.Next on the agenda is to get some bushes to put where the pond was & in front of the porch. I'm still trying to decide on what to plant.
Jim, thanks for the pics of the new fish pond. That was quite a project. It's looking great!
Today, downloaded some White Oak leaf pictures, both in fall color as well as skeletenized, so that I can proceed with my current mixed media painting. Other than that, I placed a new Tete a Tete bench in my redesigned front garden yesterday. Now to wait for the week-long rain to stop so I can finish weeding, putting in some more plants around the bench, and maybe even sit on it along with a smooch or two or three...
Today I raked some leaves. That's about all I had the energy to do! Enjoy your energy while you have it!
Thanks, Joy. It's too hot out here to do anything. It was over 90 while I was spreading the mulch yesterday. About did me in.
Ninety here too but not involved with your type of project. Good it's mostly done before real summer kicks it.
Joy, wondering if you are affected with the bad storms on the East coast. My granddaughter in CT says it is pretty terrible there.
Nina, I've heard about the bad storms here in the East but fortunately we have not been affected.
We got about 1.5" of rain today here, but almost nothing at work. I'm glad we got it since we really needed it & I didn't have to water tonight.

We got a smidgen of rain but better that than none. Very sad today as my good friend and her husband were driving home Tuesday night and were about a half mile from their turn off when a drunk driver swerved and hit them sending their car completely turned over and then it caught fire and they were both killed. They leave many friends but worse they leave five children and sixteen grandchildren. Other driver is being charged with voluntary manslaughter. He wasn't hurt.
That's terrible, Nina! What an awful tragedy! Very sorry to hear this.
Still only sprinkles of rain and my flower stems are getting spindly with high humidity and temps. Not good spring weather and our winter was equally strange. Is it global warming?
Just finished reading "Coco Chanel," a novel not a bio. It was reasonably good. I had no idea Coco was friends with Churchill. However, there was a huge mistake in the story; according to the story during the Nazi occupation of Paris, it was stated that Hitler didn't bomb Paris because he thought he would enjoy the city after he won the war. It is a well known fact that a member of the high ranking Nazi party disobeyed Hitler's order to bomb Paris. How could someone make that mistake?

We got almost 3" of rain in 2 hours last night. I think the fish pond came through it just fine, although it's murky again. It was just clearing up, too. Kind of frustrating. At least it didn't wash out.Busy day today. The grass in the fields has popped up. I really need to mow them today & some of the lawn. It's been too windy to spray, but we're looking at more rain this evening & tomorrow. Need to weed, but I'm waiting to find out about a plant ID.
Anyone know what this is? To weed or not to weed? I have a lot of it in one roadside garden.
Looks familiar but I don't know what it is.
The leaves look like weeds but perhaps that doesn't prove anything.
The 2 closest guesses 2 far seem to be either chickory or type of wild lettuce.
Can you google those two types for pictures?

Kind of a weed, but not too awful. I'm definitely going to thin it at some point. After the downpour yesterday, I have a lot of other work to do first. Far too much of the gravel I put below those gardens to control erosion is now down on Josh & Erin's lawn, so I have to shovel up what I can & return it. We rarely get downpours like this one. If it had held off for a month or two, it probably wouldn't have moved so much gravel, but it washed out the lower part of my lane which is also rare now. It even started washing over by my shop where it never has before. The kids tell me it was 3" in an hour, not 2 hours. That sort of oddity always causes problems.

We have rain today!Yesterday was beautiful. Took a ride up north to a few of our birding and fishing spots. Stopped at a small town diner for a sandwich. Good day.
Today, alas we are going to consult with a lawyer to draw up our Wills. We have downloaded forms and filled out but need some more guidance. Time to get our power of attorney paperwork fine tuned as well. Must be done. Get it over with!!!
Yes, good to have your will in order because as I mentioned last week my friend and her husband were killed instantly as they were driving home at seven thirty in the evening by a drunk driver veering into their lane hitting them head on. Their obit read, "Treat each day as your last."

Italian friends of mine long ago used to pick dandelion leaves. Wash, curl some of the leaves/strands, add salt, pepper and olive oil. I tried it - you should have seen my face. BITTER!! They laughed and kept eating. Acquired taste required!!
Yes, the wild lettuce is as bitter as dandelion leaves, although those aren't too bad in early spring before they bloom. The wild lettuce also gets more bitter the older it gets, but it has a slightly different taste.
