PS-Eddie says it can grow very tall if you let it. (asparagus)Here's a pic from Google: https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...
Jim wrote: "We had our first asparagus for dinner tonight. Love this time of year. Everything is growing & blooming. There's nothing like fresh asparagus straight out of the patch."Oh, yum. I can almost taste the asparagus. Great veggie!
We have asparagus growing all around the place, too. There's a pretty good size patch in the field that we guess was planted next to an old shed that's long gone. We have a bunch in the fence line, too. We never bother with it since the 30' patch I dug in 11 years ago is going so well. It gives us plenty.
What am I doing today? Finally getting a manicure and pedicure - using gift card hubby gave me for Christmas. Been waiting for warmer weather but it comes and goes. Never been to this spa. Actually I frequent beauty spas very rarely. Like to go 2 or 3x times a year. Sometimes only end up going once.I will be going back since along with the manicure/pedicure there was a one-hour massage included with the gift. Thought I'd check out the place first.
I got a lot done tonight. Gorgeous weather. It's 80 out, so I got home tonight & got the goats' house cleaned out. I also pulled 5 bushes in front of the house. They were junipers that had just gotten too big so I was trimming them back too far which was leaving bare patches. I'd hoped they'd fill in, but that kind usually don't & these didn't. Thankfully, I have a tractor, chain, & front end loader so I got them all yanked out & dumped in the brush pile plus all the dirt graded back fairly well all in a few hours. I'm bushed, but happy.:)
Tomatoes, zucchini, & cantaloupe planted today. Put the first 2 in my regular garden & all on the dirt/manure pile which I rotated yesterday. The horses, especially Tango, were a BIG help. Had to chase Tango away as he was trying to eat a tomato plant. It's small enough that it couldn't hurt him & I doubt he'll be interested after this since the novelty will have worn off. I hope, anyway.
The fruit of the Osage orange (hedgeballs) are closely related to the mulberry. Neither are toxic to people or animals. That said, gorging on them will probably result in colic, but they taste pretty nasty. Some horses are stupid enough to eat too many. I'd lay money on Topaz, Erin's horse, doing something like that. He seems to seek out things that aren't good for him, though. Now that she's got Tango, I hope Topaz drops dead. That horse has been a black hole for money & misery for far too long. She'll be sad, but she's the only one.
We had the kids up for dinner & watched the Derby then played cards. It rained all day here. We only got a 1.5", but they had twice that in Louisville (where the Derby is) by post time today. Very sloppy. We always have a great time playing cards. We wind up laughing until there are tears in our eyes over the dumbest stuff.I didn't get anything done I had planned today. A raccoon got into a transformer at work & blew up our electric, so I had to go in & fix all the servers & replace over half a dozen UPS plus fix a couple of computers so they'd be ready to go Monday. Then I got home & wound up taking asparagus around to some of the neighbors & wound up chatting. Not very productive, but a nice day.
Good weather in the eighties and beautiful trees in bloom all over the city and the fountain's bubbling everywhere. The city is at it's finest in the spring. Did you know supposedly only Rome has more fountains than Kansas City?

Great photo of you having fun. Here it is against the law to do that but that doesn't stop a lot of people.
I'm taking 2 days off to get chores done around the farm. Too many during the spring. My plans got derailed. About a decade ago, I put in a pond under my wife's window thinking it would be pretty & the sound of water soothing. Nope! She kept waking up thinking a tap was on in the house. Now the frogs & toads are keeping her up, so I'm moving it to the front of the house. Big job, but the hostas needed breaking up. Now that the bushes are gone, the pond will fit there & be even prettier.
That is quite an undertaking/moving a pond.. Good luck. I bet it will be perfect when you finish. Best laid plans of mice and men,,right?
Spring is gone; summer is here with high eighties and no rain in sight. Air conditioning and even my poor pansies are drooping their heads. I water water water..Clean bird baths and hope it cools off. And in case I'm not on goodreads this weekend hope you mothers have a nice day..Today is my husband's ninety second birthday. He is a bit sore from being on his hands and knees fixing the toilet plumbing. Heaven forbid he'd call a plumber.
Happy 92nd birthday Nina's husband Have a relaxing day - leave the household to do list for another day!
We've been able to sit on back deck and drink our coffee in the morning. Long winter. Nice to sit outdoors to watch the birds, chipmunks and whatever other animals come by. Hoping to go to the gym around 9am. Then home, shower and go to work.
Look forward to sitting out on deck when I get home before we make dinner. Think my husband is cooking tonight.
Life is good!
Thanks, Linda. Glad the weather has gotten nice for you.Nina, tell your husband happy birthday & I'm glad he can still deal with the plumbing.
I had a rough evening. Thought I'd mow more of the lawn while waiting for Josh to come help me move the fish pond. Mowed for 20 minutes or so & the mower started to die. I'm hoping it's just a bad spark plug. Just had similar issues with my little chainsaw & a new plug fixed it.
Turning the manure/dirt pile wasn't a good idea. I had to get some more dirt for landscaping around where the pond is going & got too much manure. It will break down into dirt in a year or so, but shrinks when it does that. Might make a real mess of the pond since it is going to rely on stable dirt for the stream feeding it.
We got quite a bit done, anyway. The pond is moved, a much easier job than we expected. It's in place with the dirt roughly in place around it. Filled it up & I'm letting it sit & settle. I left the old dirt, lily, snails, & a lily in there. It takes a while for a pond to establish itself, but this is a really good starter. I hope to finish up most of it tonight, but I'll see. I still have to fill the old hole & figure out what I'm doing with that area. I was thinking of a small evergreen bush. It can't get more than a few feet high, though.
Is anyone familiar with small-leaf holly bushes? I don't know the Latin name or variety. I'd like to place them in front of the porch where I pulled 3 others. I was thinking 1 or 2 in place of the old fish pond might not be bad, either. Thoughts?
We once had Holly bushes and I don't remember the correct name but the nursery man told me that English Holly produces the most berries.
High in the upper eighties in the afternoons here. Not that pleasant except early in the mornings are in the sixties. Even my pansies don't like those high temps this early in the season.. Where is spring?
Our weatherman says we are having mid-July temps; almost ninety on Monday next week.. Barely some sprinkles this morning and we so need more.
It's hot. I was covered by shade from a tree while working on the pond until about 11am. It was 86 when I came in at noon after finishing up the wooden frame for the stream & adding 2 more buckets of dirt. I've got most of the stream liner cut, but that's a slow process by myself. Still, I'm almost done with it. I'll get the water running soon & then start the slow process of transplanting all the plants back in & sticking rocks all around. I have a bucket load of them waiting in a pile. Most are fossil rocks I picked up from the stream.
I'm not sure if I have water lilies any more, Nina. I had one & it got so big I had to cut it apart last year. The root had taken over the entire bottom of the pond & I had to constantly pull leaves off or it covered the entire pond. It looked like it was coming back some this year, but it only had a few leaves. I left it in there & it was covered with a little water all the time, so it may have survived the move. So far one fish has died, but we don't know why. It was the prettiest, fanciest one & looked healthy. There were some tulips, hyacinths, & such that I didn't find while digging. Not sure if they'll come up next year or if they got buried too deep.
When the project is done, I'll post pictures in a Facebook album showing the whole thing. It's been a lot bigger project than I thought.
